It's been a busy week to say the least. Last weekend we had the college football conference championships, and we also had some pretty big games in the NFL that cemented a few positions in the post season. With the college football season winding down, I'm going to be focusing a bit more of my attention on the college basketball landscape.
I've also been getting to watch a bit of my niece play basketball on her varsity team. She is a starter this year as a senior, so that is really cool. She's such an amazing athlete. On top of that, our friends daughter who I call a niece even though she isn't related by blood also made her varsity team this year as a junior. I am really proud of her.
The friends daughter won their game on Tuesday night and I've gotta be honest, it wasn't a pretty game, but a win is a win.
As for my actual niece... Their team has a tough schedule this season, but last night they got their second win of the season. My niece was awarded player of the game for her team with an impressive 10 points and several rebounds, steals, and assists. Their team won 50 to 36.
I hope they can take that momentum forward with them into their game on Friday!
Meanwhile, in the NCAA, last Thursday there was just one game in the top 25 and the result was Penn State beating (8) Purdue 81 to 70. Then on Friday night, Northwestern got an upset over (19) Illinois 70 to 66 in overtime.
Saturday there were eight games in the top 25. Georgia Tech almost had the upset win over (20) North Carolina, but they fell 68 to 65. (4) Kentucky also had a really close game against (7) Gonzaga, but pulled out the overtime win 90 to 89.
I'd also like to point out that on Saturday Michigan State had a massive win against Nebraska. I was a bit worried going into this game because Nebraska had some big wins earlier in the pre-season against some ranked teams. MSU absolutely destroyed them 89 to 52. I hope this is a sign of things to come for the Spartans. They have an always tough game against Oakland University on the 17th.
Sunday there were ten games in the top 25. (8) Purdue rebounded from their previous loss with a win over Maryland 83 to 78. Missouri upset the number 1 ranked Kansas team 76 to 67. That makes me so very happy since I kind of can't stand Kansas right now. Normally I wouldn't mind Kansas, but I just think that Hunter Dickenson is a jerk. Not a fan!
UCLA had a big upset their first year in the Big 10 taking down (12) Oregon 73 to 71.
There were no games on Monday this week, but on Tuesday we had five games in the top 25. Those five games gave us two upset victories. The first being Arkansas beating (14) Michigan 89 to 87. The fact that Michigan is ranked and MSU isn't is kind of a joke to me, but that's fine. We like being underestimated. I can't really think of a single thing Michigan has actually done this season to earn that ranking, but whatever.
Then we had Illinois taking down (20) Wisconsin 86 to 80.
Last night there were just two games in the top 25 and neither of them were upsets.
Tonight there is what could be a really good game between (3) Iowa State and Iowa. I will probably be watching that for a little bit before I head off to bed.
Be sure to check back tomorrow when I share with you some of the games that I think you should keep an eye on over the weekend!
