While it might be a relaxing weekend for me as a spectator, it's going to be anything but that for a few teams in the NCAA top 25. Football season is coming to a head and before you know it we are going to be sitting watching who knows what team play in the Gastonia North Carolina Yarn Bowl.
Okay, I made that one up, but the name of some of these bowl games has really gotten out of hand! We need to get through the next couple of weeks first. I'm starting to lose hope that the Michigan State Spartans will make it to a bowl game this year. They have a big game against Purdue this weekend that is a must win for them. I mean, if you can't beat Purdue this season, you really don't deserve to go to a bowl game anyway.
In other Big Ten news, Nebraska who is 5-5 on the season has a big game against Wisconsin who is also 5-5. This could mean the difference between one of them going to bowl game as well. What world am I living in that Nebraska has a better record than Michigan State? If Wisconsin plays as well as they did against Oregon, I don't think Nebraska stands a chance.
Even Michigan has a 5-5 record and they are facing a Northwestern team that is hungry for another win. I hope the Wildcats swat them down.
Let's jump back to the top 25 though.
There are actually a lot of good games this weekend. It's going to be hard to choose which one to focus on. Multi-view from YouTube TV makes it a little easier, but still, you have to be able to multitask to keep track of it all.
(24) UNLV at San Jose State could be a good game. I wouldn't put any money on it though. UNLV is likely going to come up with the road victory. (25) Illinois versus Rutgers is one of three other match ups in the Big Ten that I would consider top tier this weekend. Those two teams are only one game apart in terms of wins and loses. Putting a little wager down on Rutgers to win at home might not be a bad idea. Do your own research of course.
The big game in the Big Ten this weekend come courtesy of (5) Indiana at (2) Ohio State. Ohio State already has that one loss to Oregon and though many will point to strength of schedule, a win by Indiana could push them out of the playoff contention and make way for yet another SEC team.
Personally, I think Ohio State will finally give Indiana their first loss of the season, but honestly, who knows.
Finally, in the Big Ten, that (4) Penn State and Minnesota game could be good. I think Penn State should win, but Minnesota has been known to surprise teams and the fact that they are playing at home could swing in their favor. Penn State has a lot to lose if they drop this game though, so I expect them to come out with all cylinders firing.
While you are still reeling from the outcome of the Indiana/Ohio State game, you might want to flip over to the (14) BYU versus (21) Arizona State game at 3:30 PM EST. This could end up being a really good game I will definitely be keeping an eye on it!
Finally, if I had to pick one other big college football game to watch this weekend, it would be (19) Army versus (6) Notre Dame. This is another case of strength of schedule allowing a team like Army to be undefeated this season, but I still wouldn't expect them to lay down against Notre Dame. The rankings might put them far apart, but the records are fairly close and Army has a lot on the line with this game.
Either way, there is lot to keep your attention this weekend. You might think you are going to relax, but I would bet you end up getting totally sucked into one of these great games.
