It is interesting how the EU is always acting to hurt their consumers, their voters.
Its yet another indication that the EU is an anti-democratic tyranny.
In Israel we are trying to go in the opposite direction with Finance Minister Smotrich attempting to raise the tax free threshold for imports from US$75 to US$150 and then $130, both of which were rejected by the Knesset.
Smotrich is making a big political issue of this and exposing MK's beholden to monopolists that keep prices high and fear competition.
An election is looming and the Israeli public wants cheaper prices.
He is particularly looking to take votes from the right wing Likud to his smaller right wing Religious Zionist party. Voters like me who are right wing but want more import competition and lower prices.
Here is a Grok summary of the issue.
