Chlupáč's Museum of Earth History / Chlupáčovo muzeum historie Země

Last Saturday, Prague hosted its annual event—Museum Night. This was the nineteenth edition. My family and I decided to visit the museum mentioned in the title of this article. The museum is located on the campus of the Faculty of Science. It was established in 2008 and named after a prominent Czech geologist and educator who died in 2002. However, the fossil collection has been growing at the Faculty of Science since the 19th century.

Minulou sobotu se v Praze konala každoroční akce - Muzejní noc. Už podevatenácté. Rozhodl jsem se s rodinou navštívit muzeum, které je v názvu tohoto článku. Muzeum se nachází v areálu přírodovědecké fakulty. Bylo zřízeno v roce 2008 a pojmenováno po význačném českém geologovi a pedagogovi, který zemřel v roce 2002. Ale sbírka fosílií vznikala při přírodovědecké fakultě už od 19.století.

The museum is relatively small. The collection was originally assembled for the educational needs of the faculty’s students, not for the general public. The most popular exhibit among visitors is this Karnosaurus.

Muzeum je poměrně malé. Sbírka byla původně sestavena pro výukové účely studentů fakulty, nikoli pro širokou veřejnost. Nejoblíbenějším exponátem mezi návštěvníky je tento karnosaurus.

It isn't explicitly stated anywhere—or perhaps I just couldn't find the information—but I assume that the items on display are merely casts of the originals.

Nikde to není výslovně uvedeno – nebo jsem tu informaci možná jen nenašel –, ale předpokládám, že vystavené předměty jsou pouze odlitky originálů.

Of course, everyone here would agree that it’s a good thing this creature isn’t living in our time.

Asi se všichni shodneme, že je dobře, že tenhle tvor není naším současníkem.

Or is it actually different? A saddle is attached to the exhibit.

Nebo je všechno jinak? K exponátu je připevněno jezdecké sedlo ...

I remember a time when people used to place a matchbox next to the subject being photographed to give a sense of its size. Or they would stand next to it. That’s probably the case here, too. But I have no doubt that there are people who believe that prehistoric dinosaurs lived at the same time as humans.

Vzpomínám si na doby, kdy fotografové kladli vedle fotografovaného objektu krabičku od sirek, aby se dala odhadnout jeho velikost. Nebo k velkému předmětu někoho postavili. To je pravděpodobně i tento případ. Ale nepochybuji o tom, že se najdou lidé, kteří věří, že prehistoričtí dinosauři žili ve stejné době jako lidé.

Podle této fotografie si můžete udělat představu o velikosti muzea. Není o moc větší, než co tu vidíte.

The person who put the exhibition together was brimming with ideas. Here’s a comparison of a stegosaurus and an M1 Abrams tank. It’s just a model, of course.

Ten, kdo výstavu připravoval, sršel nápady. Tady je srovnání stegosaura s tankem M1 Abrams. Je to jen model, samozřejmě. Někdy moc kreativity škodí ...

What can you find here? Lots of bones, of course. And lots of descriptions. Some of the bones are quite small.

Co tu všechno najdete? Samozřejmě spoustu kostí. A spoustu popisků. Některé kosti jsou celkem malé.

Some of the bones have been arranged to resemble animals. Even I can recognize a pterodactyl, though I’m no naturalist.

Některé kosti jsou sestaveny do podoby zvířat. Pterodaktyla poznám i já, ač nejsem přírodozpytec.

There are very small models of some animals here.

Jsou tu velmi zmenšené modely některých zvířat.

Some models may even be built to a 1:1 scale, since their prototypes were quite small.

Některé modely mohou být i v měřítku 1:1, protože jejich předlohy byly celkem malé.

And, of course, the imprints of plants and animals in the rock.

A samozřejmě otisky rostlin a živočichů v hornině.

I definitely don’t regret coming here. As you can see, the museum isn’t crowded. More well-known and popular museums were certainly dealing with larger crowds that day. But next year, during the next Museum Night, I’ll choose a different museum to visit.

Rozhodně nelituji, že jsem tu byl. Vidíte, že muzeum není přeplněno lidmi. Známější a atraktivnější muzea se ten den určitě potýkala s větší návštěvností. Ale za rok, o příští muzejní noci, si vyberu k návštěvě jiné muzeum.
