The punishment side gets most of the public attention, but the investigation side is usually where trust is won or lost.
If people believe powerful criminals are protected, even a harsh sentence in one case does not restore confidence. It starts to look selective. That is why transparent process matters as much as the final verdict.
Social media makes crimes more visible, but visibility is not the same as justice. The harder problem is whether institutions can act consistently when public pressure is not focused on a case.
