Well, I'm not particularly fond of it either. It drains your energy even if you are on the sidelines, not to mention directly involved. But it's a way things get said that otherwise maybe wouldn't. Sometimes you regret what you say during such times, other times you don't, and it leads to better clarity, at least, on where everyone stands.
