Last week I attended my first journalism convention. Despite having years of experience in the profession, I had never had the opportunity to attend such a large event, and it was truly enriching. The 3i Festival - Festival of Innovative, Inspiring and Independent Journalism - organized by the Association of Digital Journalism (Ajor), took place from June 13 to 15 in the Botafogo neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. The first two days of the event were held at Casa Firjan, a wonderful venue that will inspire several upcoming posts here. The final session was held at the FACHA College.

Over the three days, the congress started promptly at 9 a.m. and ended around 7 p.m. That's 30 intense hours immersed in the world of journalism with panels, workshops, case presentations, data sessions and trend discussions.

This year's 3i Festival, the 5th edition, focused on the use and challenges of artificial intelligence in journalism. This was one of the main motivations for me to travel to another state - after all, I live in Minas Gerais - besides the variety of talks and workshops offered.

On the first day, I attended a workshop on practical AI tools to optimize journalistic production, from automating repetitive tasks to analyzing large amounts of data, to understand how AI can increase newsroom efficiency. We also had a session on data and trends, focusing on how AI has made scientific information more accessible to the public, and a successful case study with Fátima, an AI from a very successful journalistic project. Since 2024 is a municipal election year here in Brazil, I also took the opportunity to attend a workshop on preparing for the upcoming election coverage, highlighting the connection between democracy, technology, AI and social platforms.

Day two was another marathon! The most relevant activities for me were the podcast workshop, with techniques for turning journalistic stories into engaging scripts, and a roundtable on the risks and opportunities of AI in journalism, with a comprehensive discussion ranging from ethical issues to opportunities for innovation.

The final day began with a discussion on international journalism funds that support innovative and sustainable projects around the world. Then there was a case study on courses as a revenue source, showing how media outlets are diversifying their income through education, and another case study on the challenges of investigative reporting for a local outlet, showing how the team faces difficulties in conducting investigative journalism stories - something I experience a lot.

Finally, another workshop explained the steps to create a good media kit and strategic portfolio, which are essential tools to promote and support journalism projects and professionals.

At the end of these three days of immersion, I can say that I left the 3i Festival with a renewed and updated vision of the future of my current profession. The combination of technological evolution and commitment to ethics left me optimistic about the potential of journalism, even in a current scenario where many fear the future of the profession with the rise of AI.

Participating in this event was a privilege and a constant inspiration for my professional journey.

Na última semana participei do meu primeiro congresso de Jornalismo. Apesar de ter anos de profissão, nunca havia tido a oportunidade de estar em um evento tão grande assim e foi realmente muito enriquecedor. O Festival 3i - Festival de Jornalismo Inovador, Inspirador e Independente - realizado pela Associação de Jornalismo Digital (Ajor), aconteceu entre os dias 13 e 15 de junho, no bairro Botafogo, no Rio de Janeiro. Nos dois primeiros dias, o evento foi realizado na Casa Firjan, um local maravilhoso que vai render alguns posts em breve por aqui. Já o encerramento teve a Faculdade FACHA como sede.

Nos três dias, o congresso teve início pontualmente às 9h e o encerramento foi por volta das 19h. Ou seja, 30 horas intensas imersas no mundo do jornalismo com mesas de debates, oficinas, apresentações de cases, de dados e tendências.

Nessa edição do Festival 3i, que já é a 5ª a ser realizada, o tema principal foi o uso e desafios da Inteligência Artificial no Jornalismo e, esse foi um dos grandes motivadores que me levaram a embarcar em uma viagem para outro estado - afinal, moro em Minas Gerais -, além da diversidade de palestras e workshop oferecidos.

No primeiro dia participei de uma oficina sobre as ferramentas práticas de Inteligência Artificial para otimizar a produção jornalística, com automação de tarefas repetitivas até a análise de grandes volumes de dados, entendendo como a IA pode aumentar a eficiência nas redações. Também tivemos uma sessão de Dados e Tendências que focou em mostrar como a IA tem tornado informações científicas mais acessíveis ao público geral e um case de sucesso que apresentou a Fátima, uma IA de um projeto jornalístico que deu muito certo. E, como 2024 é ano de eleições municipais aqui no Brasil, também aproveitei para participar de uma oficina com preparação para a cobertura das próximas eleições, enfatizando a conexão entre democracia, tecnologia, IA e plataformas sociais.

No segundo dia, mais uma maratona! As atividades mais relevantes, para mim, foram a Oficina de Podcast, com técnicas para transformar pautas jornalísticas em roteiros envolventes e uma Mesa Redonda sobre os riscos e potencialidades da IA no Jornalismo, com uma discussão bem abrangente, desde questões éticas à oportunidades de inovação.

O último dia começou com uma discussão sobre fundos internacionais de apoio ao Jornalismo, que ajudam projetos inovadores e sustentáveis ao redor do mundo. Depois um Case sobre Cursos Como Fonte de Receita, que mostrou como veículos de comunicação estão diversificando suas fontes de renda através da educação e outro Case sobre os Desafios de Cobertura Investigativa Para Um Veículo Local, que mostrou como a equipe encara as dificuldades na realização de pautas de jornalismo investigativo - coisa que eu passo bastante.

Para encerrar, mais um oficina que explicou passos para montar um bom midiakit e portfólio estratégico, que são ferramentas essenciais para a promoção e sustentabilidade de projetos e profissionais do jornalismo.

Ao final desses três dias de imersão, posso dizer que saí do Festival 3i com uma visão renovada e bem atualizada sobre o futuro da minha atual profissão. A combinação da evolução tecnológica e o compromisso com a ética me deixou otimista quanto ao potencial do jornalismo, mesmo em um cenário atual onde muitos temem o futuro da profissão com o avanço das IAs.

Participar deste evento foi um privilégio e uma inspiração contínua para minha trajetória profissional.
