Sometimes intuition brings forewarning and sometimes it malfunctions. I think in your case your intuition might have been as hungry as you were and it got ahead of itself and didn't warn you. After 12 hours of unpleasantness I'm sure your intuition gave itself a good stern talking to and hopefully has not failed since.
