The In-Between | A Ghost-hunt Love Story

The In-Between is a love story, the type you'd find in romance novels and it's got some science fiction in it. It tells a story of a girl trying to connect to the afterworld after her boyfriend dies in an accident.

Not to be mistaken for another movie of the same name made in 2019, The In-Between is a 2022 film. It was released on Paramount+ but you can find it on Netflix. It gets sad and emotional so you might want to arm yourself with tissue, or not.

Two teens are involved in an accident and the spirit of one of them, Tessa, can be seen at the scene of the accident. She then wakes up in the hospital as the only survivor. The rest of the movie is majorly a flashback and countdown to the days before the accident.

The love story of Tessa and Skylar began at a movie theater where they both saw a French movie without subtitles. Skylar, vast in multiple languages, offers to translate the whole movie for Tessa who he just met.

They go their separate ways after the movie only to run into each other again and they begin their summer as boyfriend and girlfriend.

You can already tell their love story is cut short but Tessa believes it isn't the end yet. She thinks Skylar is trying to communicate with her and she goes on a ghost-hunting mission to say a proper goodbye to Skylar in the in-between world.

My Thoughts

I had my tissue on standby but I never really got to use it. For me, the movie bordered on an intensity that it never quite reached and that isn't a bad thing. I expected that I'd be swimming in tears but it never got to that point. My eyes did well up though.

The plot is beautiful, if you love love stories, this is one movie that would have you smiling sheepishly. It isn't just a plain story, the sci-fi and supernatural part of it spices it up but it isn't over-the-top.

I think I would have enjoyed it more if the time sequence was normal and there weren't flashbacks. I began the movie with the intention to cry hot tears but I wasn't served that because I knew the end of the story from the beginning.

The beautiful thing is that the plot was still enjoyable despite this knowledge. I loved how Tessa and Skylar met and got to know each other, it was very dreamy and romantic, just the type of romance stories I read as a teenager.

The concept of the in-between world appealed to me and it's just as I had imagined it to be. Ordinarily, I might have found this cheesy, but this is the type of stuff I was into when I was a teenager.

Although, not a fan of the use of flashbacks, I liked how the scenes blended into each other. My favourite part was when Tessa and her friend arrived the scene of the accident (in the present) just when Skylar almost hit Tessa at the same spot (in the past).

My other favourite part of the movie is the scene with Tessa giving her portfolio speech, talking about accepting the ghosts that live amongst us and how love never dies. A tear finally dropped from my left eye at that point.

I also loved the in-between world scenes and how they made reference to the movie the couple initially watched together when they first met.

I can't think of anything I didn't like, The In-Between is such a beautiful movie that I want to see it again, and if it happens to be based on a book, I would love to read the book.

It's a 9/10 for me.

Have you seen The In-Between? What do you think?

Thanks for reading!

This seems like a movie I would love to watch! Going to get my girlfriend to spend a night with it in the weekend perhaps!

I think I recently read something about this fim, I put it on my list just because of Joey King, the actress from the miniseries The Act. Although the romance genre is not my favorite, some are enjoyable stories, this looks to be a good one.

Very funny I had to download it after seeing it here... What really discourages me about the movie is just the flashbacks before the accident. I don't know why the present was looking like the flashback, And he died trying to save her so painful.

That's why I don't like flashbacks, it can get confusing. Yeah, his death was sad. .

But did you enjoy the movie, apart from the annoying flashbacks?
