DIY Christmas kiddies wear
Whenever kids are around me, I find myself smiling and being all giddied up like I just saw a shooting star bringing my wishes to my doorstep.
I guess kids read my intentions or are just drawn to my love for them because they express my excitement right back.
I love how playful, carefree and out of this world they can be, believing that all their dreams can come through. Not letting the negativity of the world tarnish their innocence.
Because of my love for kids, making their outfits is so much fun. I was crazy excited about making this.
Items needed
- One and a half yards of a soft lace fabric
- A quatre yard of Ankara fabric
- Measuring tape
- Ruler
- Chalk
- Cotton lining
- Scissors
- Sewing thread
- Office pins
- Sewing machine or thread & needle
First I drew out a picture of what I wanted to make. Like placing your vision in sight so you can refer to it till it is accomplished.
Then using the measurements of the 6-year-old child, I mapped out the style on a living fabric. You could use a brown paper.
I joined two lining fabrics to make this mapped-out version because I will be discarding the bottom part.
Then draw out the curved line where the gathers will be attached to the gown. Then I cut it out.
I sewed two lines of both lace and Ankara fabrics of a 3 by 50 inch for the first and a 4 by 50 inch for the latter.
I almost forgot to cut out the back piece using the front piece. I had to place them together in the initial folded position placing them on a full lining I added an extra 1.5 inches at the back for zip allowance.
After cutting out the back there were two pieces of the back which I sewed against its cut-out lace part.
Then I separated the top portion to place on the lace fabric and cut it out as seen below, right after pining it to the fabric so it does not move.
I cut out a front and back (like a bread and butter feel) the lace being the bread and the lining being the butter in between.
Getting back to my cut-out bottom part of the front gown. I divided the width of the middle portion by 3 (20/3) and shared it accordingly.
Used the pieces to cut out the lace adding 2.5 inches on the sides for the fold effect.
Then I cut out the ankara that will be sewn inside the folds of the front lace as seen below.
Then sewed it on the cutout lace fabric.
I ironed the fold then I cut out the lining so it would not be transparent and sewed them together.
I had to slim-fit the gown to fit the child more perfectly.
Here is a daughter and mother combo of the outfits I made.
