Roger Ver, early Bitcoin investor and founder of Bitcoin Cash, arrested in Spain for alleged tax evasion in the US
Roger Ver, ein sehr früher Bitcoin-Investor und der Founder von Bitcoin Cash, wurde vor kurzem in Spanien wegen angeblicher Steuerhinterziehung in den USA verhaftet.
Ver gab seine US-Staatsbürgerschaft bereits 2014 auf, musste aber beim Zurücklegen der US-Staatsbürgerschaft auf sein gesamtes Vermögen Steuern bezahlen, als würde er es zu diesem Tag verkaufen.
Wenn man eine Staatsbürgerschaft aufgibt, besteuert der Staat zu dem Zeitpunkt das gesamte Vermögen, um Steuerhinterziehung durch Auswandern zu verhindern bzw. um Auswandern unattraktiver zu machen.
Das US-Justizministerium wirft ihm nun 10 Jahre später vor, seine Bitcoin-Bestände damals zu niedrig angegeben zu haben.
Deswegen wurde Ver in Spanien verhaftet, warum in Spanien? gab es einen internationalen Haftbefehl? Irgendwie erinnert mich die Geschichte an John McAfee, der ebenfalls in Spanien auf Ansuchen der US-Regierung verhaftet wurde und angeblich im Gefängnis Selbstmord begann.
Roger Ver war ursprünglich ein großer Befürworter von Bitcoin, hat sich aber 2017 von Bitcoin im Zuge der Blocksize-Wars und des Segwit-Upgrades von Bitcoin abgewandt und Bitcoin in Bitcoin Cash (BCH) geforkt.
Was sagt ihr dazu? Ist ziemlich abenteuerliche Geschichte, hoffe, dass es nicht so endet wie bei McAfee.

Roger Ver, a very early Bitcoin investor and the founder of Bitcoin Cash, was recently arrested in Spain for alleged tax evasion in the US.
Ver renounced his US citizenship back in 2014, but had to pay taxes on all of his assets when he renounced his US citizenship, as if he were selling them that day.
When you renounce your citizenship, the state taxes all of your assets at that time in order to prevent tax evasion through expatriating or to make emigration/expat-ing less attractive.
Ten years later, the US Department of Justice accused him of underreporting his Bitcoin holdings at the time.
That's why Ver was arrested in Spain, why in Spain? Was there an international arrest warrant? Somehow the story reminds me of John McAfee, who was also arrested in Spain at the request of the US government and allegedly committed suicide in prison.
Roger Ver was originally a big supporter of Bitcoin, but turned his back on Bitcoin in 2017 in the wake of the block size wars and the Segwit upgrade of Bitcoin and forked Bitcoin into Bitcoin Cash (BCH).

Kenne Ver aus der Story der frühen Bitcoin Tagen, war damals mit den Winklevoss Zwillingen und den damaligen Projekten befasst. Keine Ahnung was der damals gemacht oder nicht gemacht hat aber besonders sympathisch kam er mir in dem Buch nicht rüber. 🤷🏼♂️

Die amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft zu kriegen, ist schwierig, sie wieder loszuwerden, ist noch viel schwieriger. Zudem ist es auch ein absolutes No-Go, dass amerikanische Staatsbürger Steuern an die USA zahlen müssen, auch wenn sie im Ausland leben. Ich hatte einen Professor in Deutschland, der immer wieder erzählt hat, wie er nachts von der IRS wachgeklingelt wurden, weil die Rückfragen zu seiner Steuererklärung hatten, und sie immer zu in Deutschland unmöglichen Zeiten angerufen haben. 😂
Haha, ist gar nicht so einfach die US Staatsbürgerschaft wieder los zu werden, heftig auch, dass McAfee und jetzt Ver in Spanien außerhalb der USA wegen US-Steuerdelikten verfolgt und inhaftiert werden.

If he was renouncing his US citizenship, he would have been more thorough in his dealings. US fights tough!
I'm pretty 50/50 on this story, on the one hand I do believe that Roger was being dishonest, yet on the other side, the systems are really complicated and the US government just wants to fk over any people associated with cryptocurrencies on a large scale.

It is a sad story
It's an insane story. Isn't it the governments job to make sure everything was right when he renounced and I am sure he paid whatever was charged then. I feel like he was targeted because they wanted more money.
