In Bulgarien gab es während der kommunistischen Zeit in Belene ein berüchtigtes Konzentrationslager, das sich in Belene auf einer abgeschiedenen Insel in der Donau befand.
Zweck der Gefängnisinsel war Oppositionelle und Andersdenkende zu inhaftieren. Auch Geistliche wurden Opfer des Lagers.
Offiziell wurde es 1949 in Betrieb genommen, dann aber immer wieder geschlossen bzw. heimlich weiterbetrieben.
Sogar heute noch soll ein anderer Gefängnisteil auf der Insel immer noch in Betrieb sein. Zutritt auf die Insel ist strengstens verboten. Die Polizei überwacht den einzigen Zugang, die einzige Brücke zur Insel. Offiziell ist die Insel ein Naturschutzgebiet.
Ziemlich bizarr das Ganze. Eine geschichtliche Aufarbeitung gibt es keine. Das wäre ungefähr so als würde das Justizministerium in Österreich das KZ Mauthausen teilweise als normales Gefängnis weiterbetreiben.

You can always recognize a dictatorship by the way it treats its political opponents.
In Bulgaria, during the communist era, there was an infamous concentration camp located in Belene on a secluded island in the Danube.
The purpose of the prison island was to imprison oppositionists and dissenters. Clergymen were also victims of the camp.
Officially it was put into operation in 1949, but then it was closed and reopened several times or continued to operate in secret.
Even today, another part of the prison on the island is said to be still in operation. Access to the island is strictly forbidden. The police monitors the only access, the only bridge to the island. Officially, the island is a nature reserve.
Quite bizarre. There is no historical reappraisal. This would be like the Austrian Ministry of Justice continuing to operate the Mauthausen concentration camp as a normal prison. Insane.

Governments and secret prisons are never a good mix. Very convenient to send your dissenters there. I hadn't heard of this island before, it seems odd that they still even have a police presence if it's a nature reserve. Just goes to show you can never really trust "big brother".

That's a strange move not to make this island a museum. Or, the old prison is now used to store classified archive. That is also a possibility.
It's weird to hear that it's continuing to operate. Then again, I guess not having to create a new one would save on costs.
