Microsoft killt die Windows Mixed Reality / VR Plattform. Was bedeutet das für PCVR?

Das heißt nicht, dass VR auf dem PC tot ist, man kann weiter SteamVR und die Meta Quest am PC verwenden, aber die Windows VR Plattform wird bis 2026 von Windows entfernt.

Die Idee hinter Windows Mixed Reality war, eine eigene Hersteller-übergreifende VR-Plattform für Windows zu schaffen.

Der Vorteil wäre, dass man nicht für jede Brille eine eigene Software, Store und einen Account installieren müsste, sondern dass VR-Brillen ähnlich unkompliziert wie Monitore angeschlossen und Hersteller-unabhängig ausgetauscht und betrieben werden können.

Die Idee war gut, aber der VR-Markt ist einfach im Moment eine zu kleine Nische für so einen Standard bzw. ist die Konkurrenz mit SteamVR zu groß.

Microsoft scheint mit dieser Entscheidung nicht viel Zukunft im VR-Bereich zu sehen, Pläne für ein Nachfolgeprodukt der HoloLens 2 wurden ebenfalls eingestellt und auf der Xbox gibt es immer noch keine VR-Unterstützung, während Sony VR-Brillen anbietet und Apple in Kürze die Vision Pro launchen wird.

Was sagt ihr dazu? Denkt ihr, es ist ein Fehler, dass sich Microsoft aus Virtual Reality zurückzieht oder wird VR insgesamt in dieser Form ohne bessere Hardware floppen?

Microsoft is killing the Windows Mixed Reality / VR platform. What does this mean for PCVR?

It doesn't mean that VR on PC is dead, you can still use SteamVR and Meta Quest on PC, but the Windows VR platform will be removed from Windows by 2026.

The idea behind Windows Mixed Reality was to create a dedicated cross-vendor VR platform for Windows.

The advantage would be that you wouldn't have to install a separate software, store and account for each headset, but that VR headsets could be connected as easily as monitors and exchanged and operated independently of the manufacturer.

The idea was good, but the VR market is simply too small a niche for such a standard at the moment and the competition with SteamVR is just too great.

I think Microsoft doesn't seem to see much future in VR with this decision, plans for a successor product to HoloLens 2 have also been discontinued and there is still no VR support on the Xbox, while Sony offers PSVR and Apple will soon be launching the Vision Pro.

What do you think? Do you think it's a mistake for Microsoft to pull out of virtual reality or will VR as a whole flop in current state without better hardware?

Good point, I think SteamVR got the defacto standard for PCVR.

they might still change their mind. the removal date is still on 2026. so many things can still happen in 2 years.

I agree that VR is too small of a niche. When you think about it, there's not much use for VRs.

Until headsets are much lighter and comfortable mass adoption just won't happen. I think they realized that and just couldn't see it being profitable. Purely a business decision. It may come back to haunt them as competitors create better products and technology, at which point I'm sure they will jump right back in...

Wenn mehrere Firmen mit jeweils eigenen Standards um Marktanteile kämpfen, fördert das eher eine echte Funktionsverbesserung, insofern wäre eine zu frühe Standardisierung ohnehin ein Innovationskiller gewesen. Also ja, gute Entscheidung. Noch ist keines der Systeme reif für die Massenadoption.

It's hard to really say anything about it but VR is still probably a decade away from being something most people can use. Maybe they can re-enter the market when it's ready rather than when its niche.
