Elon Musk disabled public access to twitter, login required to view tweets and new users can only read 300 tweets per day 🙈 Attempt to cover up riots in France? Real reason 🧵

Was denkt ihr?

Twitter heavily restricts read access and requires users to log-in to read tweets (login wall)

Elon Musk blocked public access to Twitter yesterday, meaning you now need an account and must be logged in to see tweets and new users can only read 300 tweets per day 🙈 Trying to cover up the Islamist turmoil in France? The real reason 🧵

As of yesterday, you can no longer read tweets publicly (anonymously) or send them to friends who don't have a Twitter account.

And today Elon Musk announced to drastically limit the read access even for logged in users.

The restrictions are said to be temporary and some believe they have something to do with the recent Islamist terror in France so that looters can't network as easily.

I think the measure has a different background. Namely, Twitter recently removed free (heavily rate-limited) API access.

Consequence was that many developers were looking for other ways to still read tweets and then probably switched to the web version (GraphQL API) as a workaround.

I too have been painstakingly looking for workarounds over the past few days and found snscrape (open source project), but that is now also no longer working. Have in the meantime developed another workaround that only uses the web version. I need the API to be able to evaluate the answers to my Splinterlands quiz tweets.

Officially, the APIs are said to have been removed so that AI providers and search engines can no longer index the tweets. This move is somehow understandable but also dubious at the same time. Why should AIs not be allowed to train with public tweets or not be able to find them in search engines? Why does the access suddenly have to be so much restricted?

Are these restrictions positive for Twitter (more users and advertising revenue) or is this the end of the open Twitter platform as we know it (fewer views, since login is required)?

What do you think?

Kind of bizarre, but I don't spend much time of Twitter much anymore. I have more interesting things to do!

These are drastic changes from Twitter. Closing the platform from non users and the outside world in general goes against the tenets of a free platform in my opinion. I hope it's temporary.

Makes you wonder... It's very odd for Twitter to do that.

I don't think it should be done like this, the way our platform is now, everyone can do whatever they want on it, and it's becoming more and more strict to post on Twitter and here in the coming days. It won't be right.

The restrictions are still there right now but I think it's going to be the end of the platform if he doesn't revert things. All social media sites thrive from people staying on their site and pushing people away from your site is the worst decision.

Twitter is migrating from being free to a paid version, but I don't think it will go well. Time will tell.

That is also my impression, twitter used to be an open, free platform, all profiles and tweets were public, I often sent tweets to friends who even didn't have an account, but this generated views and traffic.

As time goes on, it seems Twitter is already losing its value

Erst mal vorweg:

It's good to prevent cyber crime, if anyone login and do something so they can detect who was logged in and they know better than us, what is good for us and them, if we secured so they also secured.
