Maurice White, founder and leader of Earth Wind and Fire, was born on December 19, 1944 in Memphis, Tennessee, USA. He had a talent for singing and began singing in a gospel quartet at Rosehill Baptist Church at the age of six years. At age 12 he focused on drums and participated in several talent contests. In 1960 he moved to Chicago with his parents. There, in 1963, he began working at the Hungry IClub four nights a week and at Chess Records (a record company) during the day.

At Chess Records, White learned teamwork, organization and production. He played with Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Howling Wolf, Billy Stewart and Etta James. In 1965, Ramsay Lewis invited Morris to become a member of a musical trio. Of course, White accepted this. They recorded dozens of albums and had pop hits like "Wade in the Water" (1966). After White left the group, he formed another group called The Salty Peppers with Don Barry, Louis Satterfield and Don Whiteland.

They performed in Chicago nightclubs but had little success. In the late 1970s, The Salty Peppers disbanded to form White Earth, Wind and Fire, which later became an internationally successful band. The original line-up of this famous group included Maurice, his brother Verdin and other famous musicians such as Michael Beale.

Maurice White was passionate about Egyptian mythology and astrology and reflected this in his music. In fact, the name of the group he created is the three elements of Sagittarius: Earth, Wind and Fire.
