The Kick-Off | Setting Things In Motion To Move Back To Spain

Just because something's hard, doesn't mean it's impossible.png

Our lives will change completely soon

We've been preparing for this mentally as well as trying to figure out what things need to be closed here before we can leave the country and start our new life in Spain. The country that once welcomed up when I no longer felt I belonged in my home country. Feeling abandoned by the state when I needed help more than ever. I lost faith in all humanity at that point and wanted nothing more than start over. And so we did, Spain was our new destination at the time. This was quite the story let me tell you, but that's not what I want to talk about today.

Almost 5 years ago, we left Spain due to financial reasons, my boyfriend couldn't find a job and so we took the first (too good to be true) offer and moved to Hungary. Although we'd never been here and we had no clue what we were getting ourselves into with the language, we also didn't have much choice and took another leap of faith. Eventually, we stayed much longer than intended, and I have to admit that I still have more fond memories of our 14 months in Spain than I have of these years here. With that, I mean memories that truly make me feel warm inside, and smile thinking back about the good life we had. We had very little money there, and yet, we were happier overall than we've ever been here. Let's say, we just don't belong here.

Building our lives

What I must say is that our lives have improved financially for the past 1,5 years or so. Before that, it was shit, a lot of golden promises were made at the time we moved here, nothing came true but the opposite. I have to admit, that this surely didn't help us to embrace the country and the people as everything seemed to be a struggle and everyone was giving us a hard time when something needed to be done. I personally got homesick as soon as the plane lifted off in Spain, I felt very happy there and although our location sucked, I would have preferred staying there, we tried, and we could not get it done.

Just a few suitcases with us

We now have done two emigrations with just some suitcases, no furniture, only what we could take with us on the plain. The first time we left in a stressful situation, where I actually was in a constant state of fear. I didn't feel at ease until setting foot on Spanish ground. The second time, we didn't have to leave many things behind as we didn't really own much there either, most items were baby furniture and stuff like that which we gave back to the people that gave it to us in the first place. We lived out of our suitcase for a few months which I hated, but what choice did we have? We made the best out of a shitty situation to slowly start turning our lives back around to a normal situation. And I have no regrets about taking that big dive into the unknown.

Viva espana text divider.png

This moving around created a restless soul for a while

I constantly felt that I didn't want to stay here longer than needed and with that in the back of my mind, I was always hoping for an opportunity that appeared and never ready to buy other furniture like a decent wardrobe. At some point, we needed to settle down and just accept we are going to be here for a while. So the mindset of "what if we leave, what are we going to do with it?" needed to go. When we rented a place, we paid 50% for the previous tenant's furniture and sold that with the same deal and some other things to the new tenants when we left there. Since then our housing situation has improved regarding size and not having a moldy bedroom, garage, etc, but now almost all furniture is not ours.

I hated that because that makes me feel less attached to the house as it's defo not my choice picking all random cabinets, none of them matching your furniture. I managed to turn it around by accepting it is what it is as well as just seeing the benefit as well. At least we now don't need to move any furniture. Yet, we have now collected much more than we actually can or want to move to Spain. It's time to have a serious look at all our belongings.

The scariest and most exciting thing

Is that I will be giving our landlord our two months notice Monday afternoon. We've been back and forward trying to find out how to align all things perfectly but my conclusion is that this is nearly impossible. At least, to plan it that way. I'm sure eventually it will align as it should, but the first step needs to be taken: deciding on an end date. Especially knowing in the back of our minds that he already mentioned that in such a case of needing a little more time, he was not going to make a fuzz and we can pay by the week.

Viva espana text divider.png

We are probably leaving sooner

The biggest hurdle will be finding a place before the tourist season starts and prices go up a lot. We don't want to lock ourselves into a tourist rental price for a full year. Therefore we really hope to be there in early May at the latest, but if I can manage to get it done sooner, I will not even think about it twice. Instead of picking an apartment from here, which is tricky, we will now fly there, rent a temporary one for 1 to 2 weeks (depending on the situation if we already have options for long-term or not) and then pick one in person.

Viva espana text divider.png

Meanwhile many things need to be taken care of

Not only paperwork like closing bank accounts etc but also I need to decide on what goes and whatnot. What do we take by plane and what will be shipped on a pallet? I seriously need to narrow down the items before I can even check how many boxes I'd need. The tickets are something that I do worry a bit about, but worst case, we could always fly to another airport and slowly make our way back to Andalusia.

I'm already taking pictures of items that I won't take and aren't really used currently anyway so I hopefully can get rid of these within the next week already. I'm so ready to see many items go, as currently, my head is exploding from wondering HOW are we going to take this all? LOL.

Craft & Paint away

Although I've collected quite some quality things for crafting, drawing, and painting, I also have a lot of paint, canvasses, and stuff like that, that is not worth it to move to another country because of the weight or annoying sizes. Therefore I decided to let my daughter go nuts with some items. Hand her the canvas and paint and tell her just create something. I rather see these things stay behind being used than have to throw them away last minute. She sure doesn't mind me being so relaxed with some items that were once off-limits for her, lol.

Viva espana text divider.png

The quote in my header image

You may wonder what that's about. The contact in Spain that will help us with the paperwork for the company set up told me it will be hard to find something in the place that I picked to live, which he confirmed being the best of these three options I narrowed it down to. As currently there's not much available and on top of that, soon prices go up as well.

But knowing how crazy our lives once were, and the shitty and complicated situations we've already overcome, I was not put down by his comment because just because something's hard, doesn't mean it's impossible. I've proven that before and honestly, I'm determined to prove that once again now. The perfect place to live is waiting for us and I will make sure we end up just where we need to be.

Viva espana text divider.png

It all felt right

From the moment I narrowed down our preferences where to live (which I won't disclose here, in case you're wondering), everything aligned, I found a school that's probably a great choice and even close to all three of these areas, and we were told it's not too touristic but also not empty during winter. I was walking through the streets there via street view and I just felt this is where we will go and feel at home.

So that's what I will be aiming for and let's make it happen! Exciting times are ahead!

Moving is stressful. Moving internationally more so. I just moved back to a country I had not lived in for more than 30 years although I had visited a few times. The changes were (and still are!) mindboggling at times. You are right though. Just because it's hard should not prevent you from doing it. All the best for your new adventure!

Moving is hard enough but to move to a different country has got to be intense. Going back to where you were happy will help. Best of luck @thisismylife to you and your family during this transition.

I know you were strongly hoping that I would go to Spain too so we could be neighbors. But unfortunately, I won't be able to. Sorry.

I am so glad you are getting to move back to Spain. From your post, it sounds like Spain is where you really want to be. Good Luck and thanks for sharing

Yes, I felt great there, and I think it will be even better where we move now. So a few months of working hard will allow us to play hard after :)

Hopefully everything works out for the very best! I've only ever moved internationally once, and that was from Canada to the US, so that almost doesn't count.

I spent three years in a city that I detested. After a number of years passed, however, I did begin to look back with some fondness, even some nostalgia, at that time. Hopefully when some time passes you'll have some fond memories of Hungary as well.

Good luck! So happy for you that things are looking up!

Well, if you look at the distance from one side of the US (or Canada) to the other, that's probably more than most distances from country to country here? :) So I guess it counts hehe, just fewer headaches regarding language perspectives.

I bet I will think of the good things as well, I mean there are good things but honestly if you spread these over the years, it's just not enough to have an overall great memory :)

BTW, I noticed you arent active on Listnerds, of course, it's up to you and I can't tell why that is. But I created a team server on Discord to collect useful info and tips, connect with the team members to help each other get verified etc, but also will I do fun giveaways. If you plan on being active and want an invite, find my discord id in the hive posts footers..

I know, I have on my godo list to keep up with listnerds. I haven't been active anywhere lately, particularly with some business travel last week. Hoping this week is better! I will hunt down the discord. Thanks for the tip!

Sounds like you have an adventure ahead of you.
I know what it is to have to move and leave things behind and it can be hard to narrow things down. Although I just moved from state to state since I'm in the USA but I can't imagine moving from one country to another but it does sound exciting.
What really matters is you're happy wherever you land. It's better to be happy and just making it than being somewhere unhappy and struggling too.
As long as you and your partner is on the same page & in the same mindset, together you can make it happen. Nothing is impossible, you just have to agree to work together and work through the hurdles together. You sound like you have a good plan so that's the important part.

I wish you and yours all the happiness a future can hold.

While resharing this blog as it feels more relevant than ever, I found your comment, and noticed I forgot to come back to it. My apologies! I appreciate your comments when I see them pop up.

It sure was an adventure so far!

We are already super happy, like I would not go back if they offered me a million bucks. :)

Thanks and I wish you the same!

I could tell that things seemed to be pretty good already from your post about the meal you guys had when you got there. And I'm glad that your boyfriend's stomach agreed with the move, that's an inspiration for staying alone.

I don't think I got to comment on that post as things have been really crazy for me lately. I'm looking forward to more of your post as you get settled in Spain.

See Ya soon!
