The first breakfast in Spain - Coffee & toast

first breakfast in Spain.png

Love for a good coffee

I think I'm not alone when I say I can appreciate a nice cup of coffee especially if the setting is right. I have refrained from drinking coffee for about a year as I drank it too much and it gave me headaches. I already knew that there would be a point where I'd start drinking it again and the time has come, when I think about breakfast in Spain, I think "cafe con leche y una tostada con mantequilla y mermelada de melocoton" (coffee with milk & toast with butter and peach jam). I have many fond memories of that time we lived in Spain and the first breakfast we had this was of course our order as we wanted to see if we still enjoyed this as much as we did several years ago.

The total package

I have to admit, after adopting the habit of eating this breakfast in Spain when we ate out, I tried to make this at home during our stay in Budapest. I assumed that when I bought peach jam, I'd be a happy camper thinking I was in Spain again. The total experience is what makes it nice, sitting at a local bar surrounded by (you guessed it) locals that are all having their first meal of the day while enjoying a morning chat in the morning sun is what makes this a nice experience. And let's not forget about the Spanish chatter around us. I absolutely love it to the point that I can't even explain why I ever thought that Spain was not for me. I feel at home here and although I will never adopt the habit of drinking beers (at all) as the locals do, I want to adopt as many habits as possible when I do enjoy them. Blend in with the locals.

Exploring the area

While we yet have to explore most of this area, I'm quite sure we will not end up in this particular part we are staying at for two weeks. But that doesn't mean we won't make the most out of our time here. on the contrary, we will absolutely explore as many cafes and restaurants as we can, while at the same time also try to balance it out with homemade meals. The first day we walked to the Lidl supermarket our mind was set to have breakfast on the way to the supermarket. We sat down at the first cafe that had other guests and ordered our cofee with toast.

Coffee with milk and a tiny fresh croissant, very good coffee!

The toast is served with butter and jam.

IMG_20220602_102350.jpg

I always wonder if the locals always use 2 butter per slice of bread because they always serve it with two cups of butter.

Last, add the jam, and enjoy your breakfast!

Simple but good

You'd think you'd not get too enthusiastic about a simple breakfast like this but yet we both do. We have breakfast for about 6/7 euro in total and don't have to make it ourselves. We enjoy the morning temperature and Spanish chatter around us which makes it another nice memory to add to those already made.

It's truly these little things that I remember from Spain when we lived here before that make me smile over and over again. I want to keep enjoying the little and simple things and therefore I bet we will have breakfast outside when we can. Not every day, but a few times a week would be no punishment. It will also make me just drink one coffee in the morning to go with the breakfast, and drink water the rest of the day, while if I make coffee at home, I'd probably not stick to one cup.

Thank you for reading!

Don't forget the "tostado con tomate" as breakfast. Soon you will blend in with the locals :)

LOL, that's probably one of the things I will not adopt, I don't love tomatoes, only if they are cherry tomatoes I accept them :) lol

But plenty of other things to blend in with, I will eat a tostada con atun instead!

Hello @thisismylife,
I do like the sound of peach jam, but I have to agree that "the experience" is what would make it more special.
The coffee, toast, and small croissant look amazing; But was there a bakery in the Lidl supermarket? My favourite place to purchase my croissants are from Lidl, their Bakery section here in the UK is amazing... I ❤️ Lidl:)))

I do agree though that it's nice to have a treat every now and then where you don't have to prepare breakfast yourself...
It's coming up to 23;00 hours and I'm craving that delightful cup of coffee.

I enjoyed reading your post... Sending good vibes for the rest of the weekend:)))

Hello!

It's truly the experience, in this case, I never enjoyed any toast with peach jam after I left Spain the first time, so weird, but true.

There is a bakery and a good one indeed. Although they differ from country to country, this one is better than in Hungary for sure! I forgot about a few things I loved so much from the bakery here.

I feel you about the coffee! Breakfast is probably the only thing I will have outside tomorrow as I burned so badly today when walking 10km, the wind made me forget about the power of the sun. If I dare to be in the sun tomorrow I will regret it so I will have a quick breakfast and stay in mostly, or until it's evening, haha.

Unless that's all closed because it's not clear to me if cafes are opened on Sunday :)
Thank you for your nice comments, I appreciate it and I hope now that we are settling finally, I will be more up to speed engaging myself!

Enjoy your Sunday (with coffee :) )

the wind made me forget about the power of the sun.

I'm sorry to hear about your sunburn, but you're right. The wind makes the heat deceiving. I hope you have some good Aloe Vera to help you. I'm pleased you had a long walk though.

I get that about the Bakery at Lidl that it varies in different countries. They have scaled back on the products here in the UK, so I tend to only have the croissants and the maple and pecan plait.

Thanks for your good wishes too, I appreciate it 😊

Yeah, I always fall for the trap, on holiday as well. It was about to happen, at least it will now only cost me one day of the holidays, even though we had plans, we can just do it after boyfriend's work later this week. I don't want to cover it up, that will be way too hot now so the only option is inside.

I only have a tube with aloe vera gel, but I will buy a fresh aloe plant as soon as we have our own place because that works magic. Our host in Spain at the time had these in abundance and I used them for many things, what a relief! Wonderful plant!

The bread products in Hungary are of low quality (not up to my high Dutch standards that is) and Lidl was the only place where I could find a few things that were ok, but even the simple baguettes are better here at Lidl than they were there at Lidl or actually anywhere. And this girl here, loves a good bread :) lol so that was a big miss for me!

Just saw your comment, I didn't know you are also the one running the cinnamon cup coffee community, how cool!

The natural aloe vera plant will be best, indeed!

Yes, I have these two communities:) I had to scroll through to see if it was the first time that you were posting here in the coffee community because I do remember you from The Minimalist. It's nice to have you here too.

Oh, you are Dutch?😁
I have a great love for the Netherlands. I live in Leiden and that's were my love for Lidl began:-))))

Es agradable sentir el entusiasmo a través de tu blog. 😁

En there it is, the ¨melocoton¨, I remember us talking about that long time ago. I didn´t know the translation, but after you told me, I never forgot. And now it´s funny to see it coming up in one of the first Spanish blogs here on the chain. Enjoy the Spanish Ambiance!

Gracias!

Yes, I admit that even before I learned to eat (and drink zuma de melocoton) in Spain, I never had that in Holland, and neither did I drink or eat it in Hungary (until I decided to try it years later) but therefore I could also not find the words in English or Dutch for a long time. It's wired in my brain as "zuma de melocoton & mermelada de melocoton". So funny how that works, lol.

I enjoyed a bit too much Spanish ambiance today by walking almost 10km and it was lovely as the wind made it so nice to walk in the shadow. Until at home I discovered how burned I am and now I'm like SHIT, going out tomorrow is probably the worst idea so I think a day inside out of the sun is best. Last day of holiday will be inside, woops.

Maybe (if it's open) only a quick breakfast across the street is possible :) and then hide for the sun :)

Uh oh, seems you need to adjust a bit! But yeah, I can see why this happened. The Spanish ambiance and being happy to be there. The enthusiasm got you! But yeah, a day or two inside and out of the sun is probably best.

Well not exactly, but at the same time it did lol. We had to get a bus card so we can travel by bus and we thought it was at the gas station where we could buy them. Turned out it wasn't (that was already a 20 min walk), we had to walk another 20 minutes and meanwhile landed in a park (so nice) and had a tapa as we were thirsty lol. We had 50% shadow so it was very nice, but of course then at home, the burn starts to shine through, ouch.

We have the card, but now we won't go to that town tomorrow, but stay in instead. It is what it is. Lesson learned :)

The food looks so delightful but then little and simple things are the ones that always put one of the best smiles on our faces.
I remember the snow period in the U.S and I love it every time I see it on my phone and tv.
Wanting to go back there to get to play with snow is childish but I will take it either way.

Funny. Here they call peaches 'Durazno' which I thought was such a cool name but just couldn't figure out what it was hahaha. Until I bought some juice and saw the peach on the box.

It's great that you're enjoying the little things, like breakfast, in Spain now.
I wish you many more of those little happy moments there.
Sounds like you're home :)

Mornings and evenings are the best time of day for me in Spain. I love the cool breeze of the mornings and the freshness of everything. The evenings are then a nice active time where things happen and lots of socialising.

Loving the diary! 🙂

Where is the Jamon Serano???????

By coincidence, we got these yesterday lol, but haven't seen it on any tapas card yet as I do recognize these :) lol

And as a good Dutch person, I usually go for what I know :) lol

Is it normal to pay for tapas nowadays? Most places here serve them with payment, not for free. Yesterday we had or first free tapas in another part of town..

(Edited)

Anywhere but Granada and parts of Almeria serve Tapa´s for free, Malaga you normally pay...basically everywhere else you pay. And Jamon Serano goes with the tostada it´s but you can get it with cheese as a tapa as well.
