Homemade Sugar Cookies With Sugar Glaze - A Mommy Daughter Baking Activity

Aspired little chef

After watching a lot of TV shows about baking cakes and cookies, one of the long awaited things to do this summer holiday was baking cookies. My daughter loves helping in the kitchen but it's simply a daunting task to let her help in this tiny kitchen so I try to avoid it most of the times. To make her happy, I thought about a cookie baking activity we can fully do on our glass dining table and with that avoid being stuck inside a too tiny kitchen. In the end, it's really just a 1 person kitchen, so assisting her prepping the cookies would become impossible. Using our glass dining table makes everything a lot easier and even the cleaning up is super simple this way.

Stand mixer

Finally another opportunity to use the stand mixer as I have to admit it was placed in the box a little while ago before we started fostering kittens as I needed to have a few boxes used as a roadblock for them to get in certain areas, lol. Yes, this mixer has been multi-functional indeed. The sugar cookies we're making today are marking the first time usage of the flat hook as today we mix a dough.

Prepping

I'm currently not very mobile and have been forbidden by my boyfriend to carry anything last week when my back pains started to become more heavier, today's prepping has been spread over several hours, lol. While the kid was learning Spanish on the tablet using Duolingo, I was slowly prepping the few steps for our cookie adventure.

I started by taking the egg and butter out of the fridge as it needed to be less cold before we started to mix the ingredients. It usually takes a few hours before it's soft enough and I planned on waiting for it naturally instead of using the microwave for it.

The ingredients

This is probably the easiest cookie recipe out there, you only need these ingredients:

  • 150 grams of white sugar
  • 50 grams of vanilla sugar
  • 200 grams of unsalted butter
  • 1 egg (medium)
  • 400 grams of flour

The process

I used the stand mixer this time so I didn't have to assist my daughter as much as I normally would need to with a hand mixer. And why not use it if you have one, right? She could almost do it by herself so any kid can probably do this, otherwise with just a bit of assistance.

Mix the sugar and vanilla sugar with the butter until creamy. When using a stand mixer, you need the flat hook, so I learned when we made these cookies. Once creamy, add the egg and mix it until fully blended into the mix.

Last, add the flour and then you will see it's a very solid and firm dough. Put this all in some transparent foil to rest in the fridge for an hour.

The fun part

This is where the fun begins (and in my case normally the back pain starts, haha) add some flour on the worktop (we did it on our glass dining table) but use the bare minimum otherwise the dough will get too dry. Roll it out until it's about 0.5 cm thick.

Instead of leaving it all as one big slice of dough, it was easier for my daughter to make tiny balls of dough and then flatten them to cut out the cookies, so we did it this way. I helped as well, but without the rolling pin, by just making small balls and flatten them by hand. Tip for when you want to do it together and only have one rolling pin, this is very doable with this type of dough!

Cut out the cookies with the cutters and place them onto a baking tray with baking paper. Preheat the oven at 180 degrees and then bake them for 10-12 minutes. They are ready when the edges are starting to brown:

Let them cool off on a cooling rack:

After a few hours you can use a bit of powdered sugar and just a few drops of water with food colouring to make the sugar glaze and then leave it overnight to make sure the sugar is hardened out otherwise your cookies will stick together in the box.

We all love them, I bet my daughter wants to make them more often from now on. Which is fine by me, lol. Just next time I will make a smaller batch of dough to avoid having to bake several times. The sugar glaze reminded me of the sugar glazed cakes we used to have in Holland. I will try making them soon to see if those are also tasty.

Thanks for stopping by!

Haha, if she could eat as many as she wanted, she'd probably finish the whole batch in a day. I gave her a few every day so they lasted much longer.

Thank you, I hope so too. Today is a bad day so I'm not sure how I will manage today but thankfully, I'm seeing the trauma doc on Wednesday.

Have a great week ahead!
