I lived for decades in Canada. Getting money for recycling bottles is a source of extra income for kids, but also poor people. Even charities would go door to door collecting your bottles. I had kids knock on my door also asking if I had any bottles to give them. In my days, there was a recycle depot next to the grocery store in my neighborhood strip mall, which was connected to the store. You just got a receipt from them that you could cash in (or else buy stuff with) at the store. So I took a couple of large bags full with bottles in and usually had enough for a case of soft drinks.

When I was a kid, we were collecting wild chestnuts (I think it's called horse chestnuts in English) as there were some huge trees on the streets... After collecting 50-100kgs, we would take it to the animal protection where they would pay us and feed wildlife deer in the winter!

Same with me. Aside from making crafts with it. When they dropped out of the tree, you could feel it pretty good if they hit your head.
