The Beautiful Morgan Dollar

As I have mentioned previously I am a big fan of Morgan Dollars. For most collectors these are the first dollar coins that are usually affordable enough to be collected. The older dollars can be prohibitively expensive, as @bitcoinman showed us in his post about America's first dollar worth over ten million dollars today!

The Morgan Dollar was designed by George T. Morgan using a model who was a young school teacher by the name of Anna Willess Williams. It took five sittings with the model for him to accomplish his design. Morgan made the image of Lady Liberty to be more middle aged to look more maternal as this had always done traditionally. The reverse was an eagle clasping an olive branch and arrows as symbols of peace and strength. It was minted as a high relief coin meaning the dies didn't last as long but produced a beautiful product.

Upon it's release it was a very unpopular coin due to it's large size and weight. There was political fighting over the coin as well making it received rather poorly. For collectors this is very fortuitous because many of the dollars never left the vaults leaving them uncirculated.

Here's a nice 1898 P Morgan that I picked up awhile back.

Some coin information of this particular coin:

Composition: 90% silver
Total Philadelphia minted in 1898: 5,884,000
Weight: 26.73 grams
Diameter: 38.1 mm
Edge: reeded

I hope you enjoyed my post. Coin collecting as well as silver and gold can be a great hobby but it's not for everyone. You can lose money. This is for entertainment purposes so before you go invest your hard-earned money do your own research. I'm not a financial advisor.

Happy Monday everyone, if you can ever call Monday a happy day that is!

A lot of it for me has been dumb luck. Just happened into a random small jewelry shop or gold/ silver shop. Many private sellers hold a bunch as well if you can find the right one. I hope you can too, they're such nice coins!

Nice Morgan, it’s got some bag mark dings on her face but the detail is pretty good.

Thanks, it's a nice one. I still may get it graded. The only problem are the bag marks and I'm not sure what grade will come back!
