Abstract Doodles Coloring Book

UPDATE: This colouring book has now been released. You can get your copy here

Yesterday, while the plumbers were busy getting my water back on, I was busy using MidJourney in my discord server. By the end of the day, I had created probably about 75 images and selected 40 of them to create a colouring book from.

I used the same basic text prompt and added a variety of objects and themes to generate the images you can see above.

Creating the images is just the first step. Once I had created them and upscaled them using MidJourney I then loaded them into Paintshop Pro. PSP is a graphic editor similar to Photoshop. I’ve used it for years. The 2023 version added AI driven upscaling, a feature I’ll be using.

Midjourney generates a default image of 1024px square. I can use ratios to generate images but it doesn’t allow me to direct it to generate specific image sizes. That means I have to process each image to get the size I want.

Images for print need to be 300pixels per inch. For a 7.75” x 10.5” image, the image needs to be 2,325 x 3,150. If you’re going to put a border on the image, then reduce the image size by that amount. I used a 10px border on each image.

To turn the images generated in MidJourney into coloring pages each image had to be upscaled and trimmed as needed to get the exact size needed.

I have a template set in Corel Draw with guidelines set in place exactly where I need to place each image and the number of pages needed. Once I have all my images at the correct size I then add them to a new template and make any other adjustments like adding the title to the template. Saving it first as a master file and then exporting it to a PDF file gives me a file for my manuscript.

Now, I need to create a cover for the book. When I finished creating my coloring pages I then created two coloured images for the front and back covers of the book. Both of the images needed to be upscaled but into letter size ready to be used for the cover.

I use Procreate on the iPad to create my covers. I have a cover template setup on there. As you can tell, I love creating templates for my books. It means I don’t have to create the basic structure every time I do a book.

A duplicate of the template is created and titled before I pull the images into the file and add a title. After doing any additional details I wanted to address, I exported the cover in both PDF and .jpg format. The header image on this post ae mockups of both the front and back of the cover taken from the image below.

Now I have the two files I need to upload the coloring book to Kindle Direct Publishing or any other publishing site to sell them.

This is the first coloring book I’ve created using Midjourney and was very happy with the results. I have a few more in mind at this point. I didn’t produce any new coloring books last year so this makes me really happy to get another one out.

That sounds very interesting. You said you used MidJourney in the Discord SErver. How is that done and , can anyone do it?

yes anyone can add the MidJourney bot to their discord server. You do have to have a paid account with them to do more than your first 25 images and to have your copyright to the images.

Whoa! Even though AI helped to create the images, all of the steps you must take after to turn them into a final product shows just how much work actually goes into the production of a coloring book. Thanks for sharing your process.
