"Because it's there..." - Part 1 (Dreem-WoTW S2 R3)

(Edited)

The place where the world stopped was not so strange, but the vertigo was overwhelming. The girl could not decide whether or not it would be wise to jump.

For a moment she froze, gathering her thoughts - trying hard to convince her mind that she was still in control. She fought nausea as she teetered on the edge, staring 150ft through rolling bars into the precipitous cavern beneath her. Crevasses like this were commonplace here. She had yearned to experience life from a new perspective; had planned her journey well, but somehow, being here right now made the experience almost too real. The IceFall was a harsh environment. She could feel her palms, sweaty and claustrophobic beneath the thick lining of her gloves. Her heart rate elevated; she triple-checked her carabiners - still locked into the ropes. Her shoulders dropped slightly but the mountains continued to spin slowly around her. Determined to prevail, she shut her eyes and took a deep breath.

It wasn't particularly wide, the gap that is - a little over twenty-five feet. It did mean that several ladders had been lashed together to span the divide. This made the traverse shaky at best. Embarking on the crossing, the risks had been high. She had lined up the crampons on her right foot with the rungs of the ladder beneath her, front and back, and once her boot was in place, lifted the left. Rinse and repeat. She had eased herself forward, one step at a time. It should have been easy. And it was... until it wasn't anymore.

Three-quarters of the way across, the glacier shifted suddenly, the ladder jerking beneath her feet. She lurched forward... her back crampon preventing her from falling flat on her face, but the false sense of security was short-lived; the loss of control immediate. And just like that, the stakes were raised. She had no time to think. Unable to correct her balance, she realised that the house was all in, and she had no option but to follow suit. Do or die.

Now, Sarah! Choose!!!

The voice inside her head screamed.

A half-prayer barely escaped her lips as she looked skyward. As the ladder twisted, she jumped, holding tightly to the safety lines. The nylon should have held, but the late May sunshine was unforgiving, and the ice screws securing the ropes to the upper walls slid easily from the glistening ice face. The anchors of her life unhinged as she fell into the vast emptiness of the abyss.

Her concept of time disturbed, she stirred, blinking into the blinding light; the bright glare bouncing off the curvature of the aluminium ladder, lying a few feet away. She could just make out the opening to the outside world, where the light was still visible; a halo around the edges of its sharp contours. It was certainly a change of perspective, lying prone and seeing the world from this angle.

She hugged herself tightly; alone, shivering, numb. She moved her gloved fingers gingerly across her face, touching her hand to the side of her head where the strap of her goggles should have been, then, wincing, drew it back quickly, wet and sticky. And heaved. Feeling empty, she traced her fingers across her face, picking at the salty ice, forming frozen streams across raw cheekbones.

In those few moments, she contemplated her presence on the mountain and her reasons for being there. She concluded, like Mallory, that she chose to experience the struggle, in all its grandeur, simply

Because it was there...

And as the simple complexity of that thought dissipated, so did her salty stream of consciousness.

This post is part 1 of a 2-part collaborative short story fiction. Part 2 has been written by @snook

You can find out more about the dreem-wotw S2 R3 collaborative writing contest here.

Compulsory prompts start each part of the story. The writer of part 2 was only permitted to start their piece once part 1 was published. Neither writer was privy to the second prompt until part 1 had been published. In the case of this story, each writer worked on their piece entirely separately from the other.

Special thanks to @snook who kindly stepped in and offered to write part 2 for me and did a magnificent job in the process 💗

"Because it's there." - Title is taken from the famous George Mallory quote, as he prepared to climb Everest in 1924, when he was asked why he wanted to do it. He never made it to the summit, and his remains were found seventy-five years later, at an elevation of around 8000 metres.

Riveting, tense and transporting. You have this uncanny knack of drawing me (hook, line and sinker. Hehe) into the worlds you conjure with such effortless skill. Gloriously captivating, detailed and exciting. Should make for a great start for the second half. 😁❤️

I'm glad you like it 🤗 That always means so much to me 💗I drew inspiration for the story from several very courageous people in this world. The struggle is real. There is always a trigger, always something that connects beneath the surface. !LUV !ALIVE

Thank you Snook. This makes me so happy. Digging deep is cathartic. I enjoy writing in layers. Two stories for the price of one - depending on perspective 💗

Love the rich language you used to describe a battle going on in the mind that occurs especially in extreme situations. One could sense that your heart beats for mountains. Great ride! Let's see how part #2 unfolds.

Thank you for enjoying this piece, @kiriszrokk. It was a multi-faceted story... the struggles within mirrored without and vice versa... and yes... I adore the mountains. That is quite perceptive of you. They are indeed my happy place. I feel so at peace when I am amongst them. I truly find peace and relaxation there that I don't find anywhere else on Earth. Oh, please do look out for part 2 on @snook 's blog in the next few days. I can't wait! !LUV !ALIVE

I understand you completely in regards to your happy place. The same applies to me when I'm scuba diving. The underwater world is my favorite "dimension" so to speak ;) And yes, I'll definitely look out for part 2 as I'm really curious as to how two different authors each with its unique style can keep the suspense and make the story come across as one single piece.

I have also scuba-dived... so I understand what you are saying. I have my advanced open water PADI qualification - but it's been a while since I last dived. Probably a good 10 years? Not since kids came along anyway. But the serenity of being 10-20 metres beneath the surface is quite something... and very humbling. I have had some incredible experiences in the ocean, both in Australia and South Africa. There's a whole other world down there 💗 !LUV

Excellent, than you certainly know what I'm talking about 🐳 I dived with Mike Ball's team at the Great Barrier Reef but haven't been to South Africa yet. Dived several times in Egypt (love wrack and night diving there), Mexico (cave & cavern diving), Florida Keys & Key West, Curacao, Sipadan (Borneo island) etc. Congrats for being an advanced diver. I'm a rescue diver. Really cool to connect with fellow divers here on Hive 😎

We did our Open Water in Brisbane mainly doing boat outings around North and South Shaddie. Never did get up to the Great Barrier Reef as we were on holiday visiting family based in Brisbane. Our Advanced Open Water was done in Sodwana Bay, South Africa. We had an open-air shower/toilet at the scuba camp site on the beach (huts) and the vervets used to visit us daily... unfortunately also a baby green mamba... that's another story and one that could have ended very badly! Luckily, I pulled off a crazy tuck and roll off the camp bed and took off at a speed of knots out the door to alert camp security. And then wouldn't let them leave my hut until they had found the little bugger... he had slid away and wrapped himself around the shower head after my narrow escape. !LOLZ (although hardly funny at the time!)

Now that is a crazy adventure. Why not write a story about it ;) Honestly though, I had similar encounters close to Melbourne and up in Cairns but with different creatures.

aw, you!!! This one did come relatively easily once the idea took hold hehe. I rewatched some documentaries on NatGeo - Solo with Alex Honnold, the first person to free solo El Cap in Yosemite, and Finding Michael with Spencer Matthews, about his brother Michael who became the youngest British climber to summit Mount Everest and sadly lost his life on the way down... And then lightbulb and it sparked the idea for my story haha... I am so enjoying my writing these days, Nicky ... so so much... my fiction that is! The other stuff... well I just try different communities to have a go at something new and different but my passion lies in fiction, creative NF, and poetry, but you know that !LOLZ !LUV ... heading over to catch up on your blog shortly again... I'm halfway through your It's not you, it's me post... I upvoted it a while ago but I don't get to read everything as soon as its published... so... catching up 😘 Much love xxx

Well you do make it seem far more effortless than I will ever find it!

Incredible sport. Did you see the film based on the true story about the guy who got stuck for five days or summink? Unreal what he survived!

Aw... no need to catch up! We all seem to be running, running far too much these days! Thank you for trusting me! Wow :D

Your comment "What's Nicky up to now". still sticks with me and makes me smile when I create something I know is a bit edgy, by the way. Best thing anyone has ever said to me about my stuff! "What's Nicky up to now." Love it! 😁

Have a beautiful day, Sam. Stay YOU. You're awesome <3

Omg great writing. You certainly love the cold landscape as a setting and it truly has a dangerous charm. So beautifully paced and descriptive. The only thing that jarred was a litany of prayer - sounds like she may have had time for a half prayer at best! I keep missing the second parts of these stories so hope I get to read @snooks.

aw thank you, River... and yes, you are right! I have just edited it to read "A half-prayer barely escaped her lips" - lol... thank you... I always appreciate constructive critique like this 💗 Not sure what the hell I was thinking other than I stubbornly liked the word litany !LOLZ and I must have missed the first time around that a litany is a prayer with several petitions 😆 You can catch @snook 's part 2 here !LUV !ALIVE !LADY

'litany of prayer' are words that just naturally go together, so if you don't pay attention they might slip in! I like constructive feedback too, just I don't get it often - people are too scared to here as it's all about the positive vibes and upvotes, but I knew you'd appreciate it as soon as I said it!!! Oh yay - she's already written it, off to read, THANKYOUUUUUUUUU

I believe he took a break from Hive to focus on balancing his life off chain a bit more... at least that's what I gleaned from a comment of his that I saw. I did reach out to him in discord but he didn't reply. He's been away for a while now.

holy cow!!! ok I did NOT expect this kind of story when I read the prompt hehehe not at all but this fits amazingly perfect!! and i love the real added in to give it that touch of reality - knowing this can and does happen! and how do we know the story??/ how do we know what happened??? this story gives a bit of insight into what COULD happen and i love it hehehe

I see that snook already wrote hers so I'm racing there to get her ending!!! i can hardly wait because she usually writes so differently - and now i want to see how her style meshes with yours and what you both come up with together! hehehe

so exciting - this was a great idea - so happy to see this turn out that you've brought for this month's dreem-wotw!!! love it sam!!!!

Yay! I'm glad you like it! I tried to write it on several different levels 😘 So there is the surface story and the deeper layers. Some might get them... And yeah I am pleased with the interest this month garnered. I think we shall have to make collabs more of a frequent thing for dreem-wotw if people like them. They are pretty fun and unpredictable! I hope you get to join us next time !LUV !ALIVE !hivebits

This is SPECTACULAR! I love the way you write each sensation so that we can empathize... You gave just enough detail to carry, but not so much that the possibilities were limited. Bravo Sam, I loved every word of this! 😍 !PIZZA !PIMP

That transition of consciousness, in the end, moved me. I'm not sure what I felt but it was there.

This is an amazing piece. I think I lived every moment with Sarah. Maybe that's why it felt so personal. It makes me wonder how many of these stories and experiences remain untold. Lost in the cold and ice crevices.

Well done.
