Battle Mage Secrets - Captain Katie Shines In The Rise Of The Commons

The theme for the current "Battle Mage Secret" challenge is Rise of the Commons ruleset this time! This means only common and rare units may be used in battles. It's not always easy to get the specific ruleset, but if you play hard enough, you definitely can find one! This time I was lucky enough to have one - woohoo!

So here's the interesting battle that I encountered.

Anyway, I thought it would be still be interesting to introduce some useful cards and show how their strengths can be maximised especially with a particular ruleset. In this post, the featured card is a Gladius card, Captain Katie!

Captain Katie is one of the few cards, in my view, that is too good to be a Rare card. With her 3 Magic damage, Snipe ability, Bloodlust ability, and 6 HP, she should at least be an Epic card. Hence, such cards are very useful for Rise of the Commons rulesets because these cards become very powerful.

As usual, here's the lore for Captain Katie for your reading interest:

A bright-eyed and loud-mouthed 5 year old stood tall on the bow of her daddy’s ship, holding onto the rail tightly as the boat tilted toward the sky before teetering over another wave. The ΛZMΛRÉ seas were especially choppy that day and a storm quickly brewing, but little Katie didn’t care. She felt like she was flying in those moments.

After the ship came slapping back down onto the churning water, Katie looked over her shoulder and there was daddy fighting with the wheel. She could see the crew behind, pulling ropes, tying knots and screaming inaudible curses at each other and the oncoming storm. Her daddy shouted “Get away from the edge!” There was another wave coming, but Katie obeyed her father and ran to his side.

“Hold onto me!” her father said as he steered the massive ship straight into the coming wave and braced himself. She wrapped her little body around his tree trunk leg just as he’d taught her. She knew she was safe holding onto his leg. Her daddy was the strongest man on the ship.

“When I grow up, my ship will sail up there!” Katie screamed at the top of her lungs while pointing at the sky just before the impact. Her father looked down at her, smiled fearlessly and chuckled out loud.

As the wave hit, Daddy was laughing and shouting “ready to fly!?” She was. Katie felt an incredible rush as the ship pointed straight toward the sky, but this wave was considerably bigger than the others. It engulfed and capsized the ship, and somewhere in the chaos, Katie lost her hold on her father’s leg. Katie was one of only three souls on the ship that night who survived; her father was not among them.

Battle Type & Team Lineup

Summoner	Avina Of The Wolf	5

Avina Of The Wolf is a new summoner from Rebellion and she is starting to become one of my favourite summoners and also the most used summoner from Rebellion. Both her abilities are very strong and very easy to use for any kind of lineup. In this case, I have applied the Heal ability to the tank.

Ulundin Overseer is also a Rebellion card with a unique Flank ability. This allows me to place a strong Melee card in the second position, especially when the Heal ability is applied to him.

2	Drybone Barbarian	9

Drybone Barbarian is one of the strongest Melee cards for Life and as expected, the amount of mana required is also massive.

3	Time Meddler	8

Time Meddler is a pretty decent card with good damage, good stats and good ability, for a Rise of the Commons battle.

4	Captain Katie	7

Since this is a brawl match, Captain Katie is selected. She packs 3 Magic damage with Snipe ability, which is very strong in my view. A little puzzled why she isn't an Epic card instead.

5	Pelacor Arbalest	6

Pelacor Arbalest is always a very risky card to use because of his low HP, but there aren't many good choices for Common and Rare cards so it is a risk worth taking.

6	Anachron Bolter	8

Mana's a luxury so I selected Anachron Bolter, which is a very interesting card. He has Ranged and Magic damage, which means both hits can be dealt from the backline. And that's not all - he has the Headwinds ability which can be a very good counter to Pelacor Arbalest. A very powerful card indeed.

• Pre Battle: When the lineups showed up, both looked pretty similar though the most glaring difference would be the summoners. Am still learning the Rebellion cards so let's see how they perform!
  

• Round 1: Round 1 was really a warm up for two big teams and both tanks remained alive.
  

• Round 2: Both teams lost cards this round, as Captain Katie succeeded in sniping one card. At the same time, I lost my tank as well. My damage output was very badly affected without General Sloan.
  

• Round 3: While the team huffed and puffed to finally clear the opponent's tank, Captain Katie completed the second snipe in this battle. Another Bloodlust in the bag!
  

• Round 4: Both teams were very strong at the front and both secondary tanks held on while the backline continued to chip away.
  

• Rounds 5-6: Captain Katie's damage output after two Bloodlust was key to taking down the opposing cards swiftly in the end. And we were finally done!

Post Battle

Did my strategy work? Definitely. Fielding strong cards for Rise of the Common battles such as Captain Katie can make a difference because both teams are very restricted when it comes to fielding powerful cards, and it's these "stronger than the usual" cards that shine. Another card that I thought is way below than its current rarity would be Deeplurker - in my view it should be a Rare card and not a Common card.

What's the Battle Mage Secret? Captain Katie is definitely more powerful than the average Rare card.
