A Prominent Dish In My Culture And My Opinion About It.
Being a Nigerian makes me happy all the time especially for the tribe that I come from. I’m a beautiful lady from the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria. Yoruba is the second most popular tribe in Nigeria and also one of the leading or popular tribes in Africa.
The Yoruba tradition exists in six states in Nigeria but we're very much populated. I’m from Oyo state which is a prominent Yoruba state and the origin of Yoruba hails from there. And when you ever want to talk about the history of Yoruba, you gotta refer back to Oyo state because we own it. Every Yoruba state has their traditional food. The people of Ekiti eat Iyan, the people of Ogun state eat Eba, the people of Lagos eat Ewa Agoyin and so much more. As for me, I’m from Oyo state and our traditional food is Amala.
What is Amala and how does it look like?
Amala is the most common food of the Yoruba people and mostly eaten by the people of Oyo state. It is made from yam peel. They make sure the yam peel is very and mostly dried by the sun. It will be cut into pieces and then it will be ready for grinding.
That’s when we get the yam flour which is mostly called Elubo. The Elubo can be used to make Amala.
Elubo mixed with hot water gives us Amala as long as it is stirred very well and has no lump. Here is what Amala looks like.
Do I like this dish?
Honestly, I don’t like it and I don’t eat it either. At the same time, I’m a very good cook and I cook it perfectly well because I was thought by my mum even though I never liked the dish. The major reason I don’t like this dish is because it is tasteless to me.
Well, I know so many people who can’t go a day without eating Amala but I usually wonder what they enjoy in the food. I guess my taste bud does not just like the food.
It is very tasteless to me and I don’t think I can ever be in the mood of eating it. It is usually eaten with any kind of soup but I don’t really like pepper so I don’t have any reason to like Amala.
The fact that I don’t like this food does not mean it isn’t yummy or it is very bad. I don’t just like it because it is not the kind of food I’d love to eat or make for myself. Also, there is no party of the Yoruba people that this dish wouldn’t be served for you to know how overhyped I think it is. As for me, I’d rather prefer to stay hungry than eat Amala.
That’s all about the local food from my state that I don’t like and other people like. I hope you could tell me some of the foods that you eat where you hail from and you don’t like.
