The Importance Of Tolerance And Diversity In The workplace

It takes a lot of courage to have tolerance. Not everyone can tolerate another. For one to be tolerant, it all has to start at home.

Sometimes parents or elders overreact to certain issues that can cause them to hurt you in a way they didn't ought to, maybe in a fit of range, and that could end up causing you a lot of pain. If you don't learn how to tolerate your parents when they say something bad to you in anger, then there's no magic that can possibly occur at your workstation.

Let me share with you a story about my uncle and his security guard regarding tolerance. Sam was his name, it was his 11th month on duty. He lives in the same compound with us at the security post. My uncle usually leaves home to work very early and returns very late at night. Most times, it is extremely late, like 11–12 p.m. at night. Since it's not always proper to return that late and blow the car horn for Sam to come open the gates, he thought of getting him a phone so that once he's approaching the gate, he'll come open for him. That way, he doesn't need to blow the car horn and disturb the neighborhood.

This has been going on for the past few months, until one cold evening. I guess my uncle wasn't in a good mood at all. So when he came back that evening, he called as usual, but I guess Sam was fast asleep, and as such, he didn't hear the phone ring. My uncle called mine, and I didn't pick either, so the frustration that he felt after standing outside for so long made him come out of the car and try to make noise with the gate, but it seems it was of no use because neither Sam nor I could hear him. I'm sure at this point my uncle must have been filled with a lot of by-range and so much anger. I don't know what happened, but I woke up suddenly when I heard a lot of noise outside, so I rushed outside to check, and surprisingly, my uncle was outside, so I quickly went down to call Sam, and he came, unlocked the gates, and then opened them for my uncle. But immediately after my uncle had driven in, as soon as he stepped out of the car, he went straight to Sam and attacked him with a resounding slap.

Then he questioned him, 'Why would you, as a security guard, sleep so early'? And then he turned to me and said, As for you, how is it possible you were sleeping so comfortably while I was locked outside? I quickly apologised and went inside, but Sam's case was different; he just stood in his position, glaring at my uncle with his eyes filled with tears. But my uncle had failed to notice that, so he just stomped inside the house angrily.

I did try to talk to Sam that night, but he didn't want to pick me up because he was crying terribly. The next day, as soon as daybreak, Sam was gone; he left without any mind of regrets. By the time my uncle woke up looking for him to apologise, he was long gone.

Now these things are bound to happen because it's life, and life must happen. Sam didn't have the ability to endure the pain. To him, my uncle raising his hands on him was a sin, and that's why he left. But that was his ego; if we tried to view it from home, assuming his dad had raised his hands on him, would he have gone?. The answer is no.

We all have anger issues; some can be controlled, but it's not that easy. If Sam had stayed, his ability to endure would have given him another form of respect and justice as well. I know my uncle felt bad after hitting him, and I'm sure he would have done everything possible to make sure he's forgiven, and that too is a credit for Sam.

Tolerance is very necessary at the workstation for productivity and growth. I hope this write-up inspires you to have tolerance.

It is well.
Well, everyone have their fault in the story except the sleeping innocent lady.

When I was in ilorin, my cousin is always coming home at that said time and most time I don’t usually open the gate
He got his keys so he opens it by himself when I stop opening it for him.
I can’t always be awake by that time

Yes the sleeping girl is innocent 😂
But in this case it a paid job, so he is supposed to be at alarm.
Thank you so much for stopping by my blog.

Personally I don’t think it was right for your uncle to hit him
Imagine if it was another person would he have slapped him?
He wasn’t supposed to sleep on his job but he’s human and these things happen
Someway I support Sam that he left because if he could slap him then who knows the worse things on the way.

Sam may feel cheated but like you said, it would have been a plus for him when your uncle apologize later. I can't judge him but if I were in his shoes, I go no where until I get another job.

Though your uncle should have tried as much as possible to control his anger but I can't really blame him because anyone could reacted that way after standing in front of the gate for hours despite employing someone to ensure that doesn't happen.

And for Sam, though the incident must have felt like an insult to him but he need to think of the fact that your uncle employed him as a security guard for reason. For the fact that he slept so comfortably knowing his employer is yet to be back that is total neglect of duty.

They both did something wrong but I believe Sam should have been more understanding.
