[ENG/DEU] Become a Better DJ! | No Setlist? No Problem! How I Always Know What to Play Next – and How You Can Too!
Playing the right track at the right time – that’s the most important thing you have to do as a DJ. But how can you make sure you’re ready for that moment? Let me show you my system – one that can save you a ton of time, both before an event and during your session.
There are many ways to decide which songs to play at a gig. Let's look at two extreme approaches:
Den richtigen Track zur richtigen Zeit zu spielen - das ist das Wichtigste, was man als DJ tun muss. Aber wie kannst du sicherstellen, dass du für diesen Moment bereit bist? Ich zeige dir mein System, mit dem du sowohl vor einer Veranstaltung als auch während deines Auftritts eine Menge Zeit sparen kannst.
Es gibt viele Möglichkeiten, um zu entscheiden, welche Songs bei einem Auftritt gespielt werden sollen. Schauen wir uns zwei extreme Ansätze an:
A) You plan and order everything
This can give you confidence – you’ve got something ready for every moment. If you’re playing your very first event and you are nervous like hell, this might be a good way to don't mess it. But after that, I wouldn’t recommend sticking to a fixed set list. Why? Because you’ll lose flexibility. And reading the crowd and reacting flexible to them is one of the most important DJ skills.
The crowd isn’t feeling your Latin Tech House set, but starts dancing when you throw in Reggaeton? Then switch to Reggaeton! But you can’t do that if your whole set is fixed. And if you switch in this moment, you’ll find yourself suddenly in the opposite extreme:
B) Nothing planned
This can be even worse. Depending on how big and chaotic your library is, you might spend most of the night just searching for something to play. And you’ll probably miss the real bangers, just because you’re hunting for a needle in your haystack of music. This constant searching causes stress – and maybe you’ve seen DJs like that. You can tell! Scrolling, testing mixes, scrolling again, eyes wide open, sweating, stressed out.
Now think of the opposite: a DJ who stays relaxed, calmly picks the next track – and it fits like it was sent from heaven. That’s the DJ you want to be.
A) Du planst und ordnest alles
Das kann dir Selbstvertrauen geben - du hast für jeden Moment etwas parat. Wenn du bei deiner allerersten Veranstaltung auftrittst und verdammt nervös bist, ist das vielleicht ein guter Weg, um es nicht zu vermasseln. Aber danach würde ich nicht mehr empfehlen, sich an eine feste Setliste zu halten. Warum? Weil du dann nicht mehr so flexibel bist. Und das Publikum zu lesen und flexibel auf es zu reagieren, ist eine der wichtigsten DJ-Fähigkeiten.
Das Publikum ist von deinem Latin Tech House Set nicht begeistert, tanzt aber, wenn du Reggaeton auflegst? Dann wechsle zu Reggaeton! Aber das kannst du nicht, wenn dein ganzes Set feststeht. Und wenn du in diesem Moment umschaltest, findest du dich plötzlich im anderen Extrem wieder:
B) Nichts planen
Das kann sogar noch schlimmer sein. Je nachdem, wie groß und chaotisch deine Bibliothek ist, könntest du die meiste Zeit des Abends damit verbringen, nach etwas zu suchen, das du spielen kannst. Und wahrscheinlich verpasst du die echten Knaller, nur weil du auf der Suche nach einer Nadel im Heuhaufen der Musik bist. Diese ständige Suche verursacht Stress - und vielleicht hast du schon solche DJs gesehen. Du kannst es erkennen! Scrollen, Mixe testen, wieder scrollen, Augen aufreißen, schwitzen, gestresst sein.
Stellen dir jetzt das Gegenteil vor: ein DJ, der entspannt bleibt, in aller Ruhe den nächsten Track auswählt - und der passt, als wäre er vom Himmel geschickt worden. Das ist der DJ, der du sein willst.
How I do it: Filters, virtual crates, mini mixes, links
This isn’t something you have ready after one day, when you already have a big unsorted library. But with the right mindset, you can build this system step by step. When you start with DJing, then it it is very easy, when you do it from the beginning... It’s actually quite simple – and it will make your public sets so much more easy to play & fun!
Wie ich es mache: Filter, virtuelle Kisten, Mini-Mixe, Links
Das ist nichts, was man nach einem Tag fertig hat, wenn man schon eine große, unsortierte Bibliothek hat. Aber mit der richtigen Einstellung kann man dieses System Schritt für Schritt aufbauen. Wenn man mit dem DJing anfängt, dann ist es sehr einfach, wenn man es von Anfang an macht... Es ist eigentlich ganz einfach - und es wird deine öffentlichen Sets so viel einfacher machen, dass du sie spielen kannst und dabei Spaß hast!
Let's start here: where and when would you play the title
I keep all my DJ music in one real folder. When I add a new track and analyze it for the first time in my DJ software, I don’t just set and name the cue points. I tag it – with location, vibe, sometimes even a personal comment.
When I hear a new track, I immediately think: Where could I play this? For example: a restaurant on the mountain, high-class customers, sunset on the terrace – I imagine Deep House, lounge vibes, nothing too heavy. So I put the track into a virtual folder named after that place.
That way, when I’m at a similar venue, I already have a strong selection. I don’t need to dig through all my Deep House tracks. I have a vibe-specific set of songs, ready to go. Tags like "intro", "outro", “positive”, “early/mid/late” or “hard” can help too – name them however you like, as long as they make sense to you. Even just this step gives you a solid foundation. But let’s take it further.
Fangen wir hier an: wo und wann würdest Du den Titel spielen
Ich bewahre meine gesamte DJ-Musik in einem einzigen Ordner auf. Wenn ich einen neuen Track hinzufüge und ihn zum ersten Mal in meiner DJ-Software analysiere, setze ich nicht nur die Cue-Points und benenne sie. Ich versehe ihn mit Tags - mit Ort, Vibe, manchmal sogar mit einem persönlichen Kommentar.
Wenn ich einen neuen Track höre, denke ich sofort: Wo könnte ich das spielen? Zum Beispiel: ein Restaurant auf dem Berg, hochkarätige Gäste, Sonnenuntergang auf der Terrasse - ich stelle mir Deep House vor, Lounge-Vibes, nichts allzu Schweres. Also lege ich den Track in einen virtuelle Ordner, die nach diesem Ort benannt ist.
So habe ich, wenn ich an einem ähnlichen Ort bin, bereits eine gute Auswahl. Ich muss mich nicht durch alle meine Deep-House-Tracks wühlen. Ich habe eine Reihe von Songs, die auf den jeweiligen Vibe zugeschnitten sind und sofort einsatzbereit sind. Tags wie „Intro/Outro“, ‚positiv‘, „früh/mittel/spät“ oder „hart“ können ebenfalls hilfreich sein - nenne sie, wie du willst, solange sie für dich Sinn ergeben. Schon mit diesem Schritt erhältst du eine solide Grundlage. Aber gehen wir noch einen Schritt weiter.
Linking
When you DJ a lot, you’ll naturally find songs that work really well together. I link them. In Virtual DJ, this is super easy. And I have no problem linking several tracks to one song.
So when I’m live and I see “Okay, there are three great tracks that follow this one nicely,” I can decide: Stay with Cumbia? Go towards Reggaeton? Or switch to Electro?
More links give you more options, without needing to scroll through your whole library or even your location-specific crates. Just 3–5 links per track is a sweet spot – not too many, easy to choose from. And if you discover something new thru wild practicing, add a new link. (And maybe delete an old one? You decide.)
Verlinkung
Wenn du viel auflegst, wirst du natürlich Songs finden, die gut zusammenpassen. Ich verlinke sie. In Virtual DJ ist das ganz einfach. Und ich habe kein Problem damit, mehrere Tracks mit einem Song zu verlinken.
Wenn ich also live bin und sehe: „Okay, es gibt drei tolle Tracks, die gut auf diesen einen folgen“, kann ich entscheiden: Bleibe ich bei Cumbia? In Richtung Reggaeton gehen? Oder zu Electro wechseln?
Mehr Links geben dir mehr Möglichkeiten, ohne dass du durch deine ganze Bibliothek oder sogar deine standortspezifischen Kisten scrollen musst. 3-5 Links pro Track sind ein guter Wert - nicht zu viele, aber leicht auszuwählen. Und wenn du durch wildes Üben etwas Neues entdeckst, füge einen neuen Link hinzu. (Und vielleicht einen alten löschen? Du entscheidest.)
Mini Mixes
Take those links and make small virtual folders: 3–5 tracks in a solid order. This is a bit more structured than reacting track by track with links. If the mood fits, just go with it. If not, glance at your links: “Okay, young crowd? Let’s try Reggaeton.” Or: “Let’s drop an all-time banger now.”
You don’t have to (but you can!) play through the whole mini mix – react to the crowd!
You switched to Reggaeton, and it’s clearly the right move? Check the song details – maybe that track is already part of a mini mix crate. Jump in and keep going. At the end of that crate? No problem. Go into the next following crate or remember: You’ve got linked tracks. Still stuck? Try your “nice restaurant on the hill” crate and dig there. Likely it brings you to a next track which is linked or part of a digital crate.
Mini-Mixe
Nimm diese Links und erstelle kleine virtuelle Ordner: 3-5 Tracks in einer festen Reihenfolge. Das ist ein bisschen strukturierter, als wenn man Track für Track mit Links reagiert. Wenn die Stimmung passt, spiel den Ordner durch. Wenn nicht, schau dir deine Links an: "Okay, junges Publikum? Versuchen wir's mit Reggaeton." Oder: „Lass uns jetzt einen All-Time-Banger probieren.“
Du musst nicht (aber kannst!) den ganzen Mini-Mix durchspielen - reagiere einfach auf die Menge!
Du hast zu Reggaeton gewechselt, und es ist eindeutig die richtige Entscheidung gewesen? Sieh dir die Songdetails an - vielleicht ist der Titel bereits Teil eines Mini-Mix-Ordners. Spring rein und mach weiter. Du bist am Ende des Ordners? Kein Problem. Gehe in die nächstfolgende Kiste oder denke daran: du hast verknüpfte Tracks. Steckst du immer noch fest? Versuche es mit dem Ordner „Nettes Restaurant auf dem Hügel“ und schaue dort. Wahrscheinlich bringt sie dich zu einem nächsten Track, der verlinkt oder Teil eines Mini-Mix ist.
Still nothing? No stress!
You don’t always need fancy transitions or perfect drop-ins. Sometimes, just let the track finish and start fresh – like a radio station. One beat ends, the next begins. Even a short pause can work – especially if the next track is a famous banger. People notice the silence, wonder what’s coming, and then – bam! – you hit them with something massive. (But that’s a topic for another article – something like “how to mix.”) And maybe this new song kicks off a whole new chain of linked tracks or even a new mini mix crate. Nice!
Immer noch nichts? Kein Stress!
Du brauchst nicht immer ausgefallene Übergänge oder perfekte Drop-ins. Manchmal reicht es, den Track zu beenden und neu zu beginnen - wie ein Radiosender. Ein Beat endet, der nächste beginnt. Auch eine kurze Pause kann funktionieren - vor allem, wenn der nächste Track ein berühmter Knaller ist. Die Leute bemerken die Stille, fragen sich, was kommt, und dann - bam! - überrasche mit einem Knaller. (Aber das ist ein Thema für einen anderen Artikel - so etwas wie „Wie man mixt“.) Und vielleicht ist dieser neue Song der Startschuss für eine ganz neue Kette von miteinander verbundenen Tracks oder sogar für eine neue Mini-Mixkiste. Sehr gut!
One more thing:
Record your sets. Most DJ software makes this easy. Listen again a few days later. You’ll rediscover what worked – and what didn’t. Which track filled the floor? Which one emptied it? Learn from it. Keep the bangers. Maybe delete the flops - at least when they cleared the floor several times.
Noch eine Sache:
Nimm deine Sets auf. Mit der meisten DJ-Software ist das ganz einfach. Dann hör es dir ein paar Tage später noch einmal an. Du wirst wieder entdecken, was funktioniert hat - und was nicht. Welcher Track füllte die Tanzfläche? Welcher Track hat sie geleert? Lern daraus. Behalte die Knaller. Streichen Sie vielleicht die Flops - zumindest, wenn sie mehrmals den Dancefloor leergeräumt haben.
Finally:
Some of the most important DJ lessons can only be learned in public. For example: Keep your head up. Read the room. You might find that kids go crazy at the barbershop when they hear DnB or even better Skrillex – but their moms don’t. And the barber? He’s getting nervous. Or you’ll hear: “Hey Paul, can you play something my guests actually know?” – while you thought your underground tracks would blow their minds. Maybe you’ll discover that Backstreet Boys still rock the dancefloor in Paraguay, because the audience screamed for it. (Not so much in Germany these days…) Or that: When the girls start dancing, the guys will follow. It’s just like that.
And you’ll see that it’s not the Instagram tricks that matter. It’s the right track at the right time, mixed in a solid way. That’s enough for most mobile gigs. This sounds like "Oh, that's enough", but playing the right sound for the right time is the best you can do! But you really like to perform like crazy? No problem with the explained system. Because you will have time for DJing, instead of searching the needle in the pile of hay.
Sure, you can learn a lot from theory (follow me here!) – but the best teacher is the audience. All you have to do is lift your head from the decks and look around. And when you’re prepared like I showed you here you’ll be able to lift him up, be ready to react and rock the crowd (instead of searching the needle...). Easy.
Start rocking! I know you can!

Einige der wichtigsten DJ-Lektionen können nur in der Öffentlichkeit gelernt werden. Zum Beispiel: Halte deinen Kopf oben. Lies den Raum. Es kann sein, dass Kinder beim Friseur ausflippen, wenn sie DnB oder noch besser Skrillex hören - aber ihre Mütter nicht. Und der Friseur? Der wird jetzt nervös. Oder du hörst: „Hey Paul, kannst du mal was spielen, was meine Gäste kennen?“ - obwohl du dachtest, deine Underground-Tracks würden sie umhauen. Vielleicht entdeckst du, dass die Backstreet Boys in Paraguay immer noch die Tanzfläche rocken, weil das Publikum danach schreit. (In Deutschland heutzutage nicht mehr so sehr...) Oder das: Wenn die Mädchen anfangen zu tanzen, werden die Jungs folgen. Das ist einfach so.
Und du wirst sehen, dass es nicht auf die Instagram-Tricks ankommt. Es ist der richtige Track zur richtigen Zeit, solide gemixt. Das reicht für die meisten mobilen Gigs. Das klingt nach „Ach, das reicht“, aber den richtigen Sound zur richtigen Zeit zu spielen, ist das Beste, was man tun kann! Aber du willst wirklich wie verrückt performen? Kein Problem mit dem erklärten System. Denn dann hast du Zeit zum Auflegen, anstatt die Nadel im Heuhaufen zu suchen.
Klar, man kann viel von der Theorie lernen (folgt mir hier!) - aber der beste Lehrer ist das Publikum. Man muss nur den Kopf von den Decks heben und sich umsehen. Und wenn du so vorbereitet bist, wie ich es dir hier gezeigt habe, kannst du ihn hochheben, bist bereit zu reagieren und die Menge zu rocken (anstatt die Nadel zu suchen...). Ganz einfach.
Fang an zu rocken! Ich weiß, dass du es kannst!

I absolutely love this trip inside of how your mind works. It makes sense, that the longer you work at it, the more "work" fits into a flow state.
Experience matters, sure.
But you seem like a natural at reading the vibe, and that is a skill that for me only comes with some effort!

I tell you, at my first gigs I tried to avoid to make eye contact - I was sooo focused on my controller or the floor of the stage... or maybe shy about "Do they like my music?" Nowadays I go "a little" more outside. I learned/got used to lift the head, to move all the time - unimportant if all the guest are inside on the table eating and I stand alone in the garden... (Yes, because you have to tranport the energy and show the fun of the music. Nobody will think "Oh, let's go outside and dance as fast as possible" when you stand there like a bored tree.)
And as confidence about my work grew up, I began to go more outside with my expressions, don't avoid eye contact any longer. In the opposite: if someone meets my eyes s/he receives 3 seconds of "extra funky Paul", maybe with duck face, head banging or something like this. I mean, I not transformed into a clown with this, but I am the DJ where is transfering positive vibes & emotions and a smile! It looks double good when I do 3 seconds "Extra-Paul" dance, because I can't dance and for sure my boogie-woogie arm movement looks like... LOL... But the people have fun! That's the most important thing. Good entertainment! A great mood! When people laugh a second about how the funk is catching me, we laugh together. Then the guests say "this was great!". And guess who will be in the head when the next birthday party is about to be planned. "Let's choose the DJ again, which brought a good night to our guests!"
And there we are again: only the doing and effort in public can train and tell you: DJ, you can be confident about your work, relax a little, let the funk rule. (It is only awkward when your performance sucks... then I don't would do this stuff too...) We can know that nobody laught about us, but with us. And even if somebody laughs about me, no problem... I see enough reasons to do that too. When people say "Do you remember this freaky DJ?" I am 100% fine with it. Good promo! They will remember me. And when the music was great too, then... I am the guy who brings the funk to the punk. LOL Then I won more than the sitting, bored looking, non-smiling DJ...

Excellent, I think the system is perfect... The main thing is to have already organized or classified the library. And then with this system is just to work and enjoy your set without stress.
