Do I Have Potential? .:. Late Night Blogging

Another Late Night Blogging post in such a short time, ph1102? Really?? πŸ˜ƒ That happens when you take a break from HIVE (btw, it was like 3 days break, but for me, it's like 3 months πŸ˜ƒ), your brain cells start to work faster... I suppose that's the effect of having more "thinking time"... Sometimes we are so deep into something that we don't think at all, but do things by routine, like robots... That happened a lot of times to me...

Back to the topic... This title was "stolen" from a very old viral post (probably over 15-20 years), where the guy posted his photo to the workout forum and asked people: "I'm 18, do I have potential?"... After that, the rest is history... As it was a bit weird and funny photo, people replied with a photoshopped version and it was hilarious... You can check out about the meme here...

Our topic will be a bit more serious... To be honest, seeing that someone is wasting its potential bothered me from an early age... Because of that, I'm self-reflecting about it many times, especially when I catch myself doing something non-productive, or doing something that has no value for anyone... Also, I remember the moment when I finished secondary school and saw some of my friends NOT going to University, while they could as they had a lot of potential...

Something similar happened today while I was listening to my wife and son preparing the (music) program for playing at one place... One hotel was asking a piano and a violin musician to entertain their customers during dinner... So, they were practicing some easy notes which most people know about... As that was their FIRST time to perform in that specific place, they were contracted as "piano and violin", and not as X and Y (individuals/person)...

Can that be counted as "wasted potential"? It's not that easy to answer those questions as there are many aspects connected... On one side, both of them are highly talented and educated musicians, and probably "overqualified" for that job, as they can do MUCH more... On the other side, if the price is right, why not... Speaking of price, what I try to educate my son is to always give the best of himself in any job that he does... As for the next time, if they are good, people will not contract them as "piano and violin", but by NAMES, as "X and Y"... That confirms the quality, avoiding discussions of doing a job for a cheaper price as you are aware of what you are getting for the money, etc.

Now, let us come back to HIVE and implement these thoughts here...

I had an interesting eye-opening experience a few weeks ago when I was chatting in Discord with @incublus in one of the after-shows on #HHHLive... He said something that I knew before, but when it comes from the mouth of another person, it is a confirmation and it gives an additional weight... It was a comment about people not "actively participating" in the show... In my head, it converted into "people not taking the lead", which implies that not all people are leaders, or "action takers", but rather just observers and followers...

Now, the issue isn't that, as it would be crazy to try to change that as it is in our human nature to follow a king, a savior, a president, etc. The issue is that many people who are doing that are actually "hidden leaders/gems" that have the potential for much more! Seeing that hurts a lot, not just the person who does it, but also its' surrounding, as it could improve quality of life of a lot of people... It is easy to spot those people only by checking comments under valuable posts, which requires the reader to think and make an opinion... As we are doing those kinds of posts on the @liotes account where people answer a question in our Liotes Missions, you can spot certain comments being better than 90% of posts on HIVE!!! Sometimes, comments from people are much, much better than their own posts!

Liotes Divider Blue.png

The incentive/reward...

That is probably one of the main reasons why this occurs... It is a blessing and a curse at the same time... Not just on HIVE, but IRL too... For example of those musicians, if they are paid badly, they will not give their best, especially if they know that additional effort won't be appreciated... The same on HIVE, if people are disappointed with their rewards on well-thought-out posts, they will stop doing them... What adds even more fuel to the fire is seeing some other, low-effort posts making more...

There is no easy solution to this problem as we are bombarded from all sides to BE THE FOLLOWERS, to NOT take the lead, which is absurd... People need more leaders, society needs more leaders, and decentralized social media needs even more... We have to show by example that we can have more than 1 leader, that we can have healthy discussions, and that we can "grow" future leaders... I would say that investing in 10 leaders is much more profitable than investing in 1000 followers!

It is hard to think about adding value to something when you don't have food on your table, and that's probably one of the main reasons why we fail so many times... It's much easier to be philanthropic if your stomach is full, isn't it?

Thank you for your time,

~ph~

You have a great way of putting things across and to help understand thinking in a certain way. This is great advice for your son and those are some good values to live by for many reasons.

Thank you very much! Unfortunately, sometimes (or often) we fail to follow our own advice, but, it is good to have some guidelines and try to stick to them...

Yes. Do parents often not say, Do As I Say, Not As I Do!? haha, although it shouldnt be like that.

I think one of the things that affect people also is not that they don't really have potential or didn't realise the potential itself but they lack people or environment that will help them live upto the potential

That's an interesting way to put things up... I could say for myself that my main excuse was (and sometimes it is still) that I was living in a bad country, that didn't give me a chance to succeed... In the end, that is just another excuse, as if I was enough ready, or aware, I would find the way to succeed, or just leave and change the environment... Unfortunately, in my example, I made a change 10-15 years later than I could...
In some way, I waste my 10-15-year potential due to my insecurities...

Good comments are very important, without them, Hive post authors are alone. In 2022 I gave a lot of upvotes for comments of at least $1 :)

That's true... Comments are important as they give value to the author's post, and also give more exposure to the people who are commenting...

if they are paid badly, they will not give their best, especially if they know that additional effort won't be appreciated

Whatever I do in life, I try to do my best and do the best I can. If someone I work for doesn't recognize my effort, after a while I give up and find someone else who will appreciate my effort...
I don't think like "they can't reward/pay me as little as I can work"... still I spend the time of my life and I want to get what my dedication deserves for the time I give (fully dedicated).

I agree 100% with what you said! Saying "They can't reward/pay me as little as I can work", means that you will CONTINUE doing something that you don't like which is a complete waste of time and potential... And we can't afford to lose any of those two...

A lot of people have potentials or even everyone but in different aspects. Unfortunately, some were not able to realize their potentials, some also realized but belittled themselves

It's definitely good for though and I do think that working hard to get recognized has an advantage as well. You never know how things will go until you actually try. I do think it's harder to be a leader but it can also be rewarding.

Reading your comment the conclusion is that you have to go out of your comfort zone, experiment, try new things, to be able to find what is suitable for you, and to find where you can use your potential to the maximum... Tbh, it's hard to imagine success without doing that... Except for winning on a lottery... πŸ˜‚

I think, that potential of a person needs to be discovered through actions, only speculating on that matter will suppress and hide the true potential.

YES! Checking out the comments on this post, I would say that people did figure it out that TAKING ACTION is the crucial in discovering (and using) the potential that we have!

Same thing, I was working regularly for last one and a half years and last two or three days I also took a leave and did not comment and now I have started again from today. When a person takes a vacation like this, some days he doesn't feel like working at all and it's hard to get back into the routine.

To be very honest, it's not just hive. It's a human thing. People are basically looking for incentive to do things. On hive we preach the reward as the main reason why people should be here, meanwhile there are so many other good things when it comes to hive. However, this is place is a testament to the fact that whether you get good incentive intially, time inevitably rewards you when you stay and do your thing.

Exactly! It shows that consistency and continuous good work bring rewards after a while... Not many reach that part of the journey, but I suppose that's another "human thing" and the proof that not everyone will make it... How was that said? If it would be easy, everyone would do it

True and there's also an admiration if they're not looking for a pianist but a person. Time is money. Quality is a better way to get a decent job.

I hope everyone always gets what they give in equal tho it's impossible nowadays. Harsh truth: Workers want a good amount of money with less effort. The headhunters want to pay less with more results. πŸ˜‚

Thanks for the sharing πŸ‘. It's a good information to think of πŸ€”

That is true! But, sometimes there is a third scenario, where workers do give 100%, but they are not paid enough...

Thanks for your kind words!

That's a bug bear of mine too, seeing talented individuals not living up to their potential, but that's life, the only one that you can have any sort of control over really is your own and your children too for a certain time period, and then they will need to learn to fly themselves.

You are right... Today, I had a talk with my friend about a similar topic, children and "teaching" them about important things in life... How it looks like talking in vane, but in the end, something stays in their heads... I know that a few years ago my son would reply to anything that I said with "NO"... πŸ˜‚

But after 2-3 years, he sometimes mentions our talks from the past, which is nice to hear and recognize! It was worth talking to the "wall"! 🀣

Interesting. I think most of us morph into a mix of our parents and influences from our formative years.
