Franklin Roosevelt Square 🇧🇷

Praça Franklin Roosevelt, better known simply as Praça Roosevelt, is a public place located in the central area of the Brazilian city of São Paulo, between the streets of Consolação and Augusta. There was a concrete architectural complex built in the 1960s over the underground passage between Elevado Presidente João Goulart and the East-West Connection. The square was also known as Praça da Consolação. Originally created without planning, the square was paved in the 1950s without proper leveling of the land, which started to cause landslides that destroyed part of the asphalt. It was from this urbanization that the city's official records began to include the name of the street like Praça Roosevelt

Franklin Roosevelt Square was built in the 60s over the underground passage between the “Minhocão” (Elevado Costa e Silva) and the East-West Connection. The project had a lot of concrete and little greenery, a reason that was widely criticized at the beginning, but between the 70s and 80s it reached its peak with several stores nearby and an upscale neighborhood. In the 90s, the central region began to decline and Praça Roosevelt was greatly affected by this decline. Theaters and neighboring stores closed while structural problems in the square only increased, the space began to become abandoned and to be frequented by other audiences. In addition to beggars, drug addicts and prostitutes, skateboarders were mainly responsible for keeping the space alive. For many years it was the biggest street spot in Brazil, bringing together the main names in skateboarding at the time, such as Beto or Die, Rui Muleque, Marcos ET, Daniel Arnoni, Ari Bason, and many others. In the late 90s and early 2000s, few skateboarders frequented the place, but those who attended were regulars, like Rodrigo de Arruda, who learned and improved his skateboarding at Roosevelt until becoming Rodrigo TX, one of the biggest names in world skateboarding.

Skateboarders have occupied this place since the end of the 1980s, however, with its revitalization in 2012, this occupation intensified and made the square become a part (Magnani, 2000) for city dwellers from all regions of the city. city. And today the place is a cool event like Monster tour where I had the pleasure of meeting big names in skateboarding
