Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Asunción en Vinaroz // Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Vinaroz

(edited)

Hola querido hiver.

Hi, dear hiver.

In this post we will visit the church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Vinaroz. You could see part of its exterior in a previous post and today we will take a look inside.

The information I provide comes from the informative posters that are scattered all over the monument.

As you go round the building, this corner is an obligatory stop. The door on the left is known as the Plateresque doorway and the one on the right is the doorway of the Communion Chapel.

The Plateresque doorway dates from 1582. It was originally located in the old church that stood where the Town Hall is now, and is all that remains of it. The medallions depict Saint John and Saint Peter, patron saints of the town. The upper image is of the patron saint of the church, the Virgin of the Assumption.

The Communion Chapel was built later, in the 17th century. It has a baroque façade and is simpler in style.

The main façade of the church is notable for its bell tower and façade. While the church was completed at the end of the 16th century, the tower was raised during the following century to a height of 33 metres.

The façade is Baroque in style, with many details that refer to the Marian dedication. The superb Solomonic columns that stand out in the doorway of the church.

Here is a closer and more detailed view of the main image of the doorway.

The interior is surprisingly large. I did not expect to find such a large church in this town, which has just over 30,000 inhabitants. There is a nave with 12 side chapels and a large chancel at the back.

A visible remnant of its use as a fortress is the defensive patrol path. It is the corridor that you can see above the chapels and that surrounds the entire perimeter at the top.

The ribbed vault is slightly pointed.

One of the stained glass windows allowing light to pass through from the outside.

As we advance towards the altar, we will see on the right the door that communicates internally with the Communion Chapel.

This chapel was built in two phases, both later than the main church.

Lower view of the dome and its lantern, which we saw earlier from the outside.

The stained glass windows in the chapel also help the light to penetrate. Here we can see the moment when Jesus Christ institutes the Sacrament of the Eucharist.

During the Civil War, the neoclassical altarpiece was demolished. The one we see today is a reproduction. The central niche houses a beautiful image of the Pietà.

We return to the main nave and reach the altar area. Its original altarpiece dates from the 16th century and was also lost during the Civil War. The sides of the apse are covered by two large 7x5 metre murals. They are the work of the Barcelona painter J. Moncada Planas and were completed in 1957.

The central sculptural group belongs to Serrano and depicts the Assumption of Our Lady. It is completed by two angels crowning the image of Mary.

Of the twelve chapels in this church, only two stand out. This one is dedicated to the Nazarene and is presided over by an 18th century carving.

The other is that of the Virgen del Pilar. She is the patron saint of my city and it makes me very happy to see her when I visit other places. There is a reason why one of our best-known jotas (typical music of my region) has the title "La que más altares tiene" (The one with the most altars).

Until the next post. In the meantime, take care!
