This song was written by Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel in 1971. The song was inspired by the poem "Kill Me Softly with the Blues" by Lori Lieberman after hearing it sung by the then unknown Don McLean (later famous for his hit "American Pie")."Empty chairs." It's written. explained. The first version of the song was written by Lieberman himself that same year.
But two years later, Roberta Flack released a new version that would win three Grammy Awards and become a huge hit. Many other artists have covered the song, including Perry Como, Shirley Bassey, Lauryn Hill and the Fugees (who won a Grammy Award in 1997), Alicia Keys, Carly Simon, Toni Braxton, Leah McFall, Jessie J, and Luther Vandross.
It was Roberta Flack who had a hit with this song in the spring of 1973, but the song is not hers. The singer heard the song in the background on a non-stop flight that took him from Los Angeles to New York a few months ago. When I asked about it, I found out that the original song was by singer-songwriter Rory Lieberman, but I wasn't that impressed.
"Of course, this title surprised me a lot. I immediately took a piece of paper, made a stick, sang the song at least 8 or 10 times and wrote down the melody I heard. As soon as I landed, I immediately called Quincy (Jones) at his house and I asked him how he could know who wrote it. Two days later I heard music.
