Every morning, a Wordler sets out on a quest for the five-letter word that can protect Wordler Village for one more day…

As a side effect of the daily curse, phone service could be spotty between Wordler Village and the rest of the world. “The Phone-a-Friend lifeline is unavailable to most of your champions,” the Gray Lady had once stated, and she was the ultimate arbiter of the rules.

However, “most” was the same as “all,” thought Wordler 383, as he waited for an international operator to connect him back to someone in his homeland through two satellite services and an interdimensional portal.

“Hello, this is the QUEEN’s Advisory Council, Wordler 367 speaking.”

“Hey, 367. This is 383.”

“Oh! You were able to get through! Are you close to finding today’s word? The Phone-a-Friend lifeline is unavailable to most of us.”

“Yeah, so I’ve heard. I’m up in the mountains. The view is gorgeous, and I’ve found a word that may be the one I’m looking for—but how can I be sure? I can’t even tell if it’s a proper word or all, or whether it’s meant to be two syllables or three, or what it means.”

“Tell me the word,” said 367. “What? You’re breaking up. Did you say your word was a grape? GRAPE would be a fine candidate word, or did you mean it was a kind of grape?”

“It’s not GRAPE,” said 383. “I think it may be an older word that’s not used much anymore. Is there a Shakespearean expert around?”

“Hold on, I’ll get Wordler 370.”

While waiting, a wide-eyed 383 took in his surroundings once more. The vista was positively eye-popping.

“Greetings to thee,” said 370. “What is thine inquiry?”

“Hi, 370,” said Wordler 383. “I’m standing pretty much on top of the world with a word that might have Ancient Greek origins. Have you heard of ah-gah-pee?”

“Thy signal hath broken up,” said 370. “Verily, the Gray Lady hath intervened to render interlocutory discourse ineffective.”

383 stared at the phone, not sure what language 370 had lapsed into. “Well, all right then. Tell everyone I’m coming home with whatever this word is, and I hope it will be the right one to save our village.”

Every day, a new Wordle Quest is released to Greg.Cent.co as a free Polygon collectible. Previous Wordle Quests may be traded on OpenSea. Authors are invited to use the #WordleQuest tag to share stories using Wordle answers as story prompts. If your story is based on the same Wordle answer as a Wordle Quest of mine that you own, include a link to your Wordle Quest NFT to receive an airdropped reward. NB: transfer the Wordle Quest to your own external wallet–I’m not sure the Cent Pages custodial wallets will be able to accept airdrops.

This is a really interesting concept! Definitely intrigued and interested in seeing these pop up in the Scholar and Scribe community! I think we could round up the best ones and do some prizes/awards each month if it is something you'd be interested in?

I’d love to find ways to get other authors involved. Maybe the best ones could be collected into an anthology and released as an NFT book.

How does the wordle minting work? Is it something you draw up yourself or is it an app that could be shared and would allow other authors to play wordle and mint an nft based on the word- prompting the creation of a short story to participate in the wordle quest?

Even without the NFT we could sponsor some sort of contest or prizes for the best posts based off the wordle prompt?

No app, at least for the moment. Just me counting up the squares and either hiding or showing the applicable layers. Someday maybe. :D

Any kind of contest would be very cool.

My favourite part is the incorporation of the Wordle colour codes into the art. Subtle but amazing.

I mean, the stories are excellent too 😉
