GENDER DISCRIMINATION CAN PUSH ONE TO LIMIT

From the early years date back to the 1960s. The limitation placed on education was so alarming. While male genders had the right to acquire knowledge, most females were denied access to education due their parents. They believe the males have educational privileges while females don't as they would be married and they will face their major responsibilities which are taking care of the home and cooking in the kitchen.

Their minds were so clouded that they saw women as tools for the kitchen and home care. Then, when a woman strives to go to school, her parents withdraw all the financial support they give her and make her go through the hurdle of training herself which was difficult.

Then, this left the majority of the females illiterate while the males were educated. Apart from unequal access to education which was a rampant thing in the early 60s. I personally have been discriminated against because of sex.

So, it happened some years back. I happen to grow up with my grandmother and she was a good farmer. When I left the village to go to town. First when I came, I needed work to keep me busy for a while. After a long search, I saw a commercial farm and beside it was a publication that read "workers needed".

I was happy because I have found something that would generate income for the meantime. I copied the number and asked one of my friends to help me dial it as I didn't have to phone then. She called and I told the man my interest in the job.

He laughed sarcastically and told me 'this job is for men not females'. But he was shocked when I told him I have done similar things as such. He gave me an address to his office and told me to come the next day for an interview.

The next day, I went for the interview and truly I was the only female among different abled males. They all got surprised when they saw me but we were all strangers as everyone reserved their comments. When it was my turn for an interview, I told him my knowledge on agricultural activities but he still disagreed with my physical abilities.

According to him "women are weaker vessels and what a man can do, a woman cannot do quarter of it. Couple with your slim stature, I don't need someone that will faint in my farmland after 20 minutes of carrying out little activity". Not minding all he had said, I was still adamant in proving to him that the work is what I can do.

I didn't allow him to chase me out of the office indecisive. After all the trials, he decided to give me the benefit of the doubt. He told me he would put me on one trial and based on how well I perform, will determine if I would be employed. I was excited and I agreed. He brought out the rules and regulations and I signed.

My first day at work was enough conviction as the manager acknowledged my effort and apologized for judging me wrongly at first as feminine. After my first three months there, I was promoted as the supervisor of the farmland. The truth is that, I didn't feel so bad when the manager was being bias, discriminative and doubting my abilities, rather I was firm in proving to him he was wrong and my strength and effort complemented that impression.

In addressing all forms of discrimination, there are several measures to be taken and they include:

First is awareness. Creating awareness through educational programmes that promote equality and respect for all humans. Also, the government also plays a vital role by implementing a law that prohibits gender discrimination and enforcing laws that promote equality in all areas of life, that is in both education, jobs, career among others.

In addition, the media through programmes and TVs shows should speaks against stereotypes and represent all genders in all aspects of life. With equality in the society, individuals' will value and respect one another irrespective of one's gender.

Wowwww! I am so impressed by knowing that you not only could perform the duty well but also was promoted.

Women are often thought of as weaker. While the fact is that they have strength which is undervalued.

Thanks so much @amberkashif for reading through my post and for the heart to drop an amazing comment. My service there was valued and there was no disappointment. When I wrote my resignation letter, they pleaded I should stay with two times double of my salary but I declined because my reasons for stepping down was neck pressing.

I will definitely come on board, let me take some take to explore and understand everything. Thanks so much for the invite, it's a place I would love to be.

Seriously, awareness is needed for this thing called discrimination to be dealt with as soon as possible. I'm glad that your manager apologized for doubting you.

Yes, creating awareness as much as possible is needed for fighting gender inequality. There are so many things we do with no idea that we are discriminating, creating awareness from these little ones to the bigger ones would be a nice measure to balancing equality in all forms. Thanks dear friend @stellageorge for recognizing that.

For my manager then, he sure did apologized for judging wrongly and I accepted his apology with my shoulders high 😂😉😂😂.

Interesting! how women struggling to prove that they are capable of handling what a man can handle 🤧 it confuses me.

My dear, you did well to prove them wrong, if you had stayed longer you would have become the manager 😊

Hahaha. Yeah, you are not wrong because that would have happened if the manager wasn't the owner of the property. Being the owner, he knew what agricultural activities entail.

Regardless, I enjoyed my stay there and played my supervisory role efficiently. Thanks so much darling @ginika for your pleasant words.

Thanks for giving the job your very best to proof your doubters wrong. Lot of people still believe we females are weaker vessel, they don't know what ever we put our mind and strength to do will be done perfectly.

Exactly. I agree with you and using myself as an example, whatsoever I put my mind to achieve, that thing is achieved but many fail to see that in us.

Awareness and sensitization programs on gender equality is needed for everybody.

Indeed, those will help in curbing inequality.

Sorry,
I would have done the same too if I were the manager.

In my home, we grew up with farm work. My sisters, all of them know how to do farmwork. Some of them stage with us(guys) whenever we go to farm

If you were to be the manager, I would have still stood my ground and convinced you to take me for it. By the time I finish, you would be left with no choice but to concur.

I know how tedious farm work could be mostly when it is a substantial farming where most things are done manually due to lack of sophisticated crop farm tools but in the commercial level, the work load is much no doubt but with modern tools, activities become a bit easier.

A lot oo my sister and I'm glad things changed for good. That stereotype is gradually dying off as women are doing greatly in all aspects of life currently.

Again goes the saying don't judge a book by its cover , I think this applies to gender also. Don't judge an individual by their gender, end of discussion

You are very correct @sam9999 . If judging is replaced with respect when it come to inequality, our society will be the best habitat.
