Humpolec, the Town of Beer

If you were to ask in the Czech Republic which town is the town of beer, most people would probably tell you it's Pilsen. After all, the city gave its name to a type of beer. But Pilsen has almost 200,000 inhabitants and the brewery there is not in an exposed location.

In the town of Humpolec, however, there is a brewery with a lookout tower on the hill. It can be said that the brewery is the dominant feature of the town, because the tower can be seen from everywhere. And Humpolec has barely 12,000 inhabitants.

The local brewery is a bit specific. It's called the Bernard Family Brewery. From 1948 to 1989, our country was communist. All the factories, including the breweries, were nationalized.

In 1989, the revolution took place and communism was overthrown. The brewery in Humpolec was the first brewery to be bought on credit by Mr.Bernard in 1991. Since 2000 the brewery has been a joint stock company with international capital. But it is still remembered as the first private brewery.

Místní pivovar je trochu specifický. Jmenuje se Rodinný pivovar Bernard. V letech 1948 až 1989 byla naše země komunistická. Všechny továrny včetně pivovarů byly znárodněny.
V roce 1989 proběhla revoluce a komunismus byl svržen. Pivovar v Humpolci byl prvním pivovarem, který v roce 1991 koupil na úvěr pan Bernard. Od roku 2000 je pivovar akciovou společností s mezinárodním kapitálem. Stále je však připomínán jako první soukromý pivovar.

We tried to see more of the city than just the brewery and restaurants. The architecture, the local open-air museum... We'll save the brewery visit for next time, we're definitely planning it.

Snažili jsme se vidět více z města než jen pivovar a restaurace. Architekturu, místní skanzen... Návštěvu pivovaru si necháme na příště, určitě ji plánujeme.
