Warrior: Tongs of Chinatown are at it, again.
I've stepped away from Kdrama for a while to enjoy the pleasure of watching something different from what I've been watching since months ago. It started with me checking out a couple of Korean Movies. I've watched a lot of those recently and I'm impressed with what these guys are doing. I still prefer Korean TV shows to their feature-length films though.
After playing around with Korean Movies, I decided to get into the foreign TvShows which I previously watched up to a certain point. It's been too long since I watched any of those and a quick check showed that Warrior already has a 3rd season. The last time I watched the show, it had only 2 seasons. I got up to speed with the storyline in the previous seasons and immediately dived into the third season of the show.

The show is set in Chinatown of San Francisco in the 1870s, an era that was filled with Tong Wars and all the drama, bloodshed, and chaos that came with that. The show broadly tells the story of Ah Sam, a Chinese Martial Artist who emigrated from China in search of his sister but found himself in the Tong business when he got sold to one of the biggest Tongs in Chinatown.
The young "Chinaman", as he was originally referred to, quickly showed that he was a martial arts prodigy. He also proved to be an asset for the Hop Wei Tong as each tong needed a good number of skilled warriors who would do their bidding. Ah Sam quickly moved up the ranks in Hop Wei Tong and established himself as one of the hottest striking martial artists in Chinatown.
While thriving as a member of a Tong, he was still in search of his sister, Mei Ling. It interestingly turned out that his sister hadn't been messing around either. She got married to the Boss of the Long Zhi, another Tong in Chinatown which is equally as reputable as Hong Wei Tong. She wasn't treated decently, but she wasn't going to sit back and take in all the harsh treatment from her husband who's old enough to be her Dad.
Mei Ling is smart, cunny and ruthless. She killed her husband, took over his tong, and started establishing herself as a powerful figure in Chinatown. She took steps further to get involved with both the Irish and Americans to grow her popularity. It paid off at several points, but also bit her in the ass a couple of times too.
One of many interesting part of the drama in this TV show is the relationship between Ah Sam and her sister. They are part of opposing tongs which have an ongoing history of bad blood between each other. Ah Sam struggles to put his interest or that of his tongue ahead of his sister. However, Mei Ling is a different sorta being. She aimed to kill Ah Sam in an attempt which Ah Sam narrowly escaped.
After all that drama in the first two seasons of the show, the above trailer introduces us to the third season which was completely released in the last quarter of 2023. I just finished watching this recent season of the show and I'm glad I finally got to watch it.
The character dynamics in this show is superb. Chao is one of the characters who's very complex and does things that can never be understood in plain sight. It's interesting to see him get involved with basically everyone while knowing that all of those people he's getting involved with can turn the table on him and even have his neck on a spike. He's a smart lad.
I usually crack up when the Irish characters come onscreen. I love that accent so much and I enjoy their dirty talk. Haha. Big shout to Mark Dacascos. The man is a legit martial artist. I remember watching him in the late 2000s and it's a pleasure to see his performance in this show. His on-screen presence commands respect even when he got put to a long sleep in the 8th episode.
I rate this show highly.
