Miranda Rights: The prize for malevolence.

While every detective in the anti-crime unit of Oakland Police Station is busy thinking about how to catch the person that killed the head Nun of Hope Orphanage, Jimmy who is performing his social work in the station appears to be overwhelmed with thoughts of how to make sure he won't get caught by the same police. His life which is already a wreck is about to get crappier if he gets pointed out as a suspect in this murder case. That will surely be the death of him and he knows it.

The investigation started at Hope Orphanage at the first light of that Saturday morning when some detectives came from Oakland Police station to take over the crime scene. They started by securing the crime scene which is the office of the head Nun. A yellow 'Do Not Cross' barricade tape was used to cover the office where the head Nun was still laying in a pool of her blood.

The forensic team joined a few minutes later and started combing the scene for any evidence that can point them to the culprit. They took pictures of the scene from several angles and quickly checked the corpse before it got transferred for a proper autopsy.

"Where can we get a copy of the footage recorded between last night and this morning". One of the detectives asked a Nun while pointing at the CCTV mounted at the entrance to the office of the Head Nun.

"I will get that for you". The Nun replied enthusiastically as she quickly walked out and came back later with an SD card which she handed over to the detective.

The Nun is the secretary to the deceased Head Nun and she availed herself to answer any question that can help the detectives get to the root of the case. The loss of their Head Nun is already taking a toll on her, but the only thing that can be worse than that would be to have a murderer running wild after committing such a crime. It would make the entire Orphanage an unsafe place for the staff and kids.

"Please tell me if there is any other thing I can do to help." She said with teary eyes.

"A record of all the staff, with their phone numbers attached, will surely help. We also need a record of every visitor that came to the orphanage yesterday." Replied the detective.

She got all that and handed it over to the detectives. It only took a glance for the detectives to notice a familiar name.

"Jimmy Scouse? Jimmy?" Blurted out the detective as two of his colleagues came closer to see what is going on. "Didn't Jimmy get released on parole two weeks ago?" He asked no one in particular.

The Nun stared at the detectives with a confused look that begged for an explanation. "Jimmy is one of the volunteers that started working with us this week. Please tell me everything is okay. Is there a problem with Jimmy?". She asked almost immediately.

The detectives knew that Jimmy is bound to be involved with this case. He has been in and out of Juvenile detention since he was 15. Growing up in a broken home did its numbers on him. He started from a very young age to seek comfort and companionship from anyone ready to look his way. That was when he got himself involved with a local gang filled with crack addicts who are capable of doing anything for malevolence's sake.

As he grew into adulthood, he got to spend multiple time in Jail for drug abuse, infliction of bodily harm, bullying, theft and all sorts of crime. He just got out on parole two weeks ago and has been tasked with 3 months of volunteer service at Hope Orphanage. And so it began... Just a week of volunteering and he's already a murder suspect.

The Nun's curiosity was already having the best of her as she asked; "Can anyone please tell me something about Jimmy? Do you think he's connected with this case in any way"?

"Jimmy is bad news and he's capable of this, but murder would be a new low even for someone like him". Replied one of the detectives.

"Don't worry, we will get to the root of this". Added another detective.

The detectives left the scene to forge ahead with their investigation. Everything seems to be unfolding well since Jimmy's criminal record already made him a suspect, but they know quite well that evidence is needed before they can get him punished for murder.

While driving to Jimmy's address, two of the detectives in the Van were reviewing the CCTV footage they got from the orphanage.

"This piece of shit is truly unchangeable!" Uttered one of the detectives as he turns the laptop to show his colleagues footage from the CCTV.

The footage at the entrance of the Head Nun's office captured a drunk Jimmy sneaking into the Nun's office by 3:20 a.m. and running out of the office by 3:27 a.m. This matches the estimated time of death they got from the forensic scientist.

"C'mon, guys. We need to get in quietly and nail this murderer for good" said one of the detectives as they reload their guns and prepare themselves for an arrest.

Knock knock Knock... knock Knock Knock

Jimmy heard the knock and asked the person knocking to identify himself, but he didn't hear a word. "Who is there" he added, but he didn't get a reply.

Knock Knock Knock...

Jimmy angrily rushed to the door to know who was messing with it, but what he saw was a bunch of detectives who pinned him to the ground immediately. He tried to break out of their grip, but his effort was no match to theirs. The detectives cuffed his hands to his back as they mumbled his Miranda rights to him.

"I swear, I didn't do it!" Lamented Jimmy as he got dragged into the Van of the detectives.

The detectives were not having any of his lamentations. They ignored his denial and went ahead to comb his apartment. They found a couple of phones in his drawer and one of them has the picture of the Head Nun as wallpaper. Further inspection led to the discovery of a kitchen knife which was covered with blood.

The detectives picked that up and placed it in an evidence bag to avoid any contamination before it gets analysed for fingerprint identification. They also need to run a test on the blood to be sure it matches that of the deceased Nun. After collecting as much evidence as they could lay their hands on, they took Jimmy to their Van and took him to their station for interrogation.

Jimmy was left alone in the interrogation room for 10 hours without anyone coming in to interrogate him. That's a Psychology trick used by detectives to break a suspect before starting an interrogation. It also gave them enough time to get the autopsy result, run a fingerprint analysis on the murder weapon and extract a copy of the CCTV footage that shows Jimmy walking in and out of the Nun's office at her estimated time of death.

The long wait is finally over as one of the detectives walks into the interrogation room with some paperwork.

He sat opposite Jimmy who is cuffed to the chair as he kicks off his interrogation;

"You can say the truth about what you did to the head Nun and save all of us the trouble or you can deny being involved like you've been doing. In any case, you will be spending what's left of your lifetime in Prison"

Jimmy tried to deny being involved, but the detective started to bring out one piece of evidence after another. By the time he was done highlighting all the evidence which points to Jimmy as the culprit, it became clear to Jimmy that there is no way out of this.

"It was an accident. I didn't know she was still in her office when I sneaked in to steal from there". The look on his face is like that of a cornered rat. There is surely no way out of that mess.

"You stabbed her. Not once, but thrice. That doesn't count as an accident." The detective immediately refuted Jimmy's claim of it being an accident. He continued... "Just don't die young. I hope you live a very long and painful life as you spend your lifetime in Prison". He hissed and left the interrogation room.

It's obvious that the detectives already have enough evidence plus the culprit's confession to the crime. That's enough to prosecute Jimmy and give him the punishment he deserves, but nothing can bring back the Head Nun of Hope Orphanage from the dead.

Hi @kenechukwu97. We ask our community members to avoid writing stories for publication in The Ink Well that center around violence. Please see our community rules and our article on The Ink Well's stance on violence When you read that article, you will hopefully understand why the senseless stabbing of a nun is not something we would like to see in our community.
