How long is "too long" to wait for an additional season of a TV show?

The Hollywood trend of releasing a show and coming back years later to release an additional season of the show is not exactly something I enjoy. I'm an impatient dude in that regard and I don't enjoy having to wait before getting an additional episode or an additional season of a show just because it's not yet aired.

This is partly because I grew up watching kdramas and we are not used to having a season of a show and waiting for the next season to be given approval, funded, shot, and subsequently released. In case you don't know how Koreans do theirs, they focus on getting all the story packed into one full season.

That's why shows like Jumong have 81 episodes, Six Flying Dragons have 50 episodes, Nokdu Flower has 48 episodes, etc. And, all these are packed into one season.

A lot has changed in the industry since then till this very moment. Korean Drama industry has been gaining traction all over the world and big International Broadcasters are beginning to get into the Kdrama market. That's good in part because it grows the business side of Kdrama projects.

However, I find it hard to understand why Kdrama projects have been drawn into the Foreign TV show broadcasting pattern of making their TV shows seasonal. Most of the Kdramas that hit the spot in the last few years are getting recalled for additional seasons. Kdramas like;

  • Kingdom

  • The Penthouse

  • Alchemy of Souls

  • The Uncanny Counter

  • Tail of the Nine-Tailed, etc

Each of these dramas released additional seasons even when some of them didn't have any plans to go for additional seasons. As a Kdrama buff and someone who reviews these shows, I looked into the second season of these shows and some of them didn't have sparks that were as good as the first.

Take Uncanny Counter for an example.

The first season which was released in 2020 had everything you would want from a story of that genre. It had a good storyline and fairly decent stunt scenes. The second season however just came out of nowhere. It was released a few months ago and I watched it sometime in November.

I probably would have had lots of good things to say about it if I watched the additional season immediately after watching the first one. However, 3 years gap is long AF and I was bored to death by the second season of the show.

Make no mistakes though... The storyline wasn't bad and the acting is as good as it gets. I also believe they fitted in more iconic villains in the second season of the show.

But, something about the second season as a whole just wasn't intriguing to me. I still can't understand the reason they had to go dig up a second season for the show. That's probably a "Me Problem".

I originally planned to write a review of the second season of this show and I've had that sitting in my to-do for a very long time. I probably won't have more things to say about it than what I've already said and it's not something anyone would enjoy reading, especially if you a big fan of the show. So, I will leave things as it is.

For the record, I'm giving the second season of the show a shaky 6/10. Let's move on.

At the moment, fans are already asking for the second season of other Kdrama projects like All Of Us Are Dead, Squid Game, etc. I see what y'all are doing and I understand you want to get more thrill from watching this blend of characters in the same show.

Of course, I see all that!

However, don't be too sure you won't end up cussing at the director, scriptwriter, and the entire production crew when they give you an additional season that's poorly written and too rushed.

Can someone forward this post to the Kdrama Entertainment Industry or perhaps set me up for a discussion with them? I need to bare my heart to the folks. Haha.

I was watching Squid game-The challenge and when I got to episode 9, I found that episode 10 would come some two weeks later. I was almost had sleepless nights waiting for it 😅. So I can relate when waiting for another season of a movie makes you sad. I will find this uncanny encounter and watch, although I am not a fan of Kdrama.

Haha... That's very serious and I make sure to only watch Kdramas that are already complete. I don't enjoy having to wait for days, weeks, or months just to watch an additional episode or season. Haha.

The Squid game I watched is not the violent Korean film , I said am not a fan of Kdrama but it's call "Squid game the Challenge". It is a reality show and very interesting with 456 contestant but only one winner. Script writers should desist from making people salivate before acting other episodes.

I have always found Kdrama movies very interesting, I have seen many, but the one I liked the most is Goblin, the Lonely Immortal Being, it is very dramatic and I cried in many occasions, the romance genre goes very well, there are many movies of the genre that are not so good, but since I started watching Kdrama, I have not seen anything that I don't like.

That's true. It's the same for me. I watch Kdrama and I always look out for them because I like how they tell their story and I like the way they promote their culture through these stories. It's awesome.

I think it all comes down to money. Get the money to make a show and complete it. Great.

Then find out people like it and there is money to be made... great. Make more. Except the writers weren't expecting things to continue. The actors weren't expecting additional seasons. The production crew moved on and the sets and locations moved on.

Big lag getting everything worked out again.

Personally right now I'm watching an anime called "MF ghost" I get one 22 minute episode every week. It is soo frustrating. Then again I grew up in an age before streaming so I can live with it... but still... very annoying.

Yeah. You layed it bare as it is and that's the fact. I've seen shows where they changed the major characters in the additional seasons because some of the former characters no longer want to sign a contract for additional seasons.

I can imagine their frustration and that of the writers. The production crew usually face a huge task when something like that happens and the fans of the show also have to hope that the additional seasons won't be a total disaster.

As a side note.... Sometimes waiting for additional episodes of a series is a good thing. I loved Dr. Who in the 1980s then it went on hiatus for a very long time. When it came out again it was better than ever. I loved the series Red Dwarf (it was awesome) then in the middle of the series it went off air for a couple of years and when it came back...still loved it. In that case one of the major characters was going through a serious legal battle and possible long term imprisonment. Luckily he was found not guilty and things went on.

Truly I hate it when there is a long break in a series. Often it comes back weaker (here's looking at you Stranger Things) but every now and then you get a comeback gem :)

It is sad and unfair that the Kdrama production style we all know is different from what's going on now.

And I believe it all as do with money... people ask for more, and so they bring out so much more, not caring what they lack and years it may take to bring out the next one. Frustrating... eh, mate? But, it is just businesses.

Yeah. It's all business and those who are cashing out from it don't care about the sentiment of the fans of the show. None of that bothers them. They just go on and make additional seasons until they get themselves fattened.

We all will end up dealing with this recurring turn of events.

I'm a fan of kdrama and I have watched uncanny encounters, I love the season one a lot due to the plot, twist and most of the unexpected tragedies that triggered viewers emotion. I know it might seem like it should have ended in season one but there is something you need to know about movies. While writing a script there is something we call loop hole or twist, areas of the movies that is yet to be narrated which can be manipulated into creating another episode or season. This are the major techniques used by series movies producers. And when it comes to uncanny encounters after the season one there were still a lot of areas that were not fully explained in season one, we never really knew the full extent of "So moon" power an individual considered to be the ace of the team.

Secondly in the season two we never really saw an evil spirit that made it to the highest level apart from a level 3 evil spirit that was shown in season one. We never really knew other members of the team where capable of pushing the limits of their powers to the extent that "Hana" grew so strong and was even capable of defeating "So moon" in a fist fight. This are the areas that were exploited in the season two.

For tails of the nine tailed fox, the death of lee rang, lee Yoon's brother at the end of the season one really made the whole thing look too tragic and everyone was wondering if lee yoon was still a fox, i guess the season two was an answer to any form of question that might arise from season one. More like a more befitting happy ending for the viewers.

There are also cases when the interest of the viewers forces the producer to release another episode, probably because they are not certified with the way the previous season ended just like "game of thrones" for instance, I would have loved it if another season was released to make the ending more tolerable.

I'm not a fan of waiting too long but some movies are worth the wait 😅.

Haha... Everything you said is on point and that's the painful part. There are shows I will watch and I will be seeing all the loopholes in it. When I see that in the first few episodes, I always hope they will get to demystify things as we dig deeper into the show. Whenever they leave it hanging until the end, I mostly know they will push their luck and go for an additional season. Haha

It's still business. That part of the whole thing is fairly understandable. Many factors make the production crew decide to get back for additional seasons. It's very easy to spot the reason when a show gains very wide popularity. Haha.

I'm not very good at waiting especially when the show Hits the spot. I prefer to binge them when all the seasons are available. Haha.

Recently I only focus on series with complete episode, that is why I have refused to watch power book 3 and 4. The waiting can be frustrating sometimes.
