My Kind Of Vegetable Garden || Ladies of Hive Community Contest #81

1️⃣ If you plan to grow a vegetable garden, what is your favourite vegetable to grow and what dishes do you use it for?

I come from a family of farmers and have always wanted to grow a vegetable garden simply for wellness and healthy living. Our world has become advanced to the point that about 70 per cent of our foods are processed and packed in cans and other preservative forms.

Despite this modernization, we have quite a population of people who believe in eating healthy by growing their food and this includes a vegetable garden.

Growing one's own food and vegetables means you know what goes into your stomach, unlike the foods we buy in the market where some of them are heavily sprayed with pesticides and other chemicals. Sometimes, we react to such foods and they upset our body system, causing sickness.

My mother loves to grow her garden and anytime I travel home, which happens maybe once a year or every two years, I feast my eyes on her blooming green leafy vegetables like waterleaf, bitterleaf, tomatoes, peppers of different varieties, a pawpaw tree in the centre of the garden, cucumber and other vegetables. The positive side of this visit is I get to add more vegetables to my diet than I normally do in my own home.

I live in the city and there is hardly a personal space to nurture a garden but I am planning to start one soon. To grow a garden, a person must not necessarily have a large space of land. I could start with pots and grow some vegetables.

I met with a gardener who owns a large commercial garden close to my residence. She buys, grows and sells seedlings of different flowers, plants and vegetables. I admire her garden every time I walk past. After a talk, she advised I need a little space for air and sunlight for the plants.

When I start my garden, I would love to grow some vegetables like my mom does but particularly I hope to grow aloe vera plants. I love aloe vera because of its health benefits to the body, skin and hair.

Buying aloe vera from vegetable sellers or farmers' markets is super expensive here but when a person grows them, it's better and more convenient. After my talk with this gardener, I took a picture of her aloe vera seedlings (above) which she agreed to sell for the price of $2.50 for the small seedlings and $4 for the bigger ones.

I hope to buy this aloe vera succulent for a start and try my hands on gardening. It's more my mom's forte but I am hoping I will be good at it too. One step at a time. If I succeed in not killing the plant, lol, I will work on expanding a bit more to other seedlings.

Aloe vera has lots of beneficial properties, especially for the skin. The clear gel and yellow latex in the leaf can be eaten. It can also be blended into juice, smoothies or yoghurt and used in making soups and stews.

Wish me luck!

Thanks for the invite, but I won't have the opportunity to participate in time.
We begun a vegetable garden last year with tomatoes, peppers, lettuces, radishes, .. but the weather was awful and neighbours's cats came in our vegetable garden as we couldn't consume anything. This year, we only planted flowers protected by a net and mint in a little greenhouse. We'll see if it succeed :)
I wish you good luck for the Aloe Vera, it's a very interesting plant !

I've been a limo driver for 25 years and haven’t had a single customer.
All that time and nothing to chauffeur it.

Hi @florenceboens! Oh no, sorry about your gardens. I hope the net you made around your flowers will keep the cats away this time. If it works, you can give the vegetables another try!

Yes, I like aloe vera! Thanks a lot for your wishes and visit. Have a great weekend! !LADY !PIMP 🙂

Interesting! So, does she plant from seeds or can Aloe Vera be rooted from the mother plant? I wish you luck; very nice! Thanks for sharing and have a lovely day!

When I think of the number of canned foods I eat ehn, my heart goes gbim gbim. It's not as if the fresh ones are hard to find, canned ones are just less stressful overall.

I like the idea of growing aloe vera, you not only use it in your food but also for skin and injuries. I can't own plants right now, my dog destroyed four already.

True, canned foods are easy but the preservatives and other additives are things to be worried about.
Yes, finger crossed! I hope to get it right with my aloe vera.
Haha, your dog doesn't want competition in the house! 😄
Thanks a lot for your visit.

Oh! That aloe is so gorgeous! Good luck with that and your gardening ambitions! You can grow so much food in such a small amount of space! I have a friend who has perpetual microgreens (sunflower, radish, etc) sprouting in her apartment window, she always has fresh, nutritious salad!

Me, I have a huge garden, and my favorite things to grow in it are everything lol! But I really love cultivating tomatoes, basil, potatoes, and Asian greens.

Thank you so much for sharing this on Listnerds!!!

You'll love it!

Aloe vera is one of the easiest plants to grow as it does not need much. Its the only plant that I have planted around all my homes.

It is great medicine and comes in handy in the summer when kids play outside and get eaten up by bugs.

I look forward to seeing pictures of your garden!
