Shortcuts

Rules play a crucial role in society. They help develop the structure and also form a solid foundation. It is when the foundation is solid that the building will stay strong. Rules serve as the foundation for orderliness and are needed in all aspects of life. Let's use driving as a case study. Just imagine there are no rules guiding the way people drive. Imagine there's nothing like stop signs, overtaking rules, traffic lights, and so on. How long do you think people would survive on roads? There would definitely be countless accidents every day. Not only do rules serve as a foundation for orderliness, but they also help promote safety.

Rules provide guidelines on how people should behave and live healthy lives. They play a vital role in shaping a child’s life, right from the moment of birth, moving on to school, and then when the child becomes an adult. The importance of rules in a school setting cannot be overemphasized. Just imagine a school without rules where everyone could do whatever they wanted without consequences. Students do as they please- they are free to sleep in school, get into physical fights, and even go against the school authority. It would be an absolute chaos.

I do not have lots of experience when it comes to breaking rules. yes, you guessed right (if you even guessed at all). I'm a good boy and I don't like breaking rules. Life has a funny and interesting way of making things happen. Sometimes, we find ourselves in desperate situations where we have no choice but to break the rules. I don't recall the last time I broke a rule on purpose, but I do remember a time in secondary school when I did something bad. I've actually never told anyone this story about myself, but I guess it's high time to let it out.

MY EXPERIENCE

This happened years ago during my high school days. I attended a Catholic school, and if there's something you should know about Catholic schools, it is the fact that they take their rules seriously. I was a good student. Overall, my grades were perfect and my behaviors as a student were valued by my teachers and younger ones. This catapulted me to the top. I became a senior and a prefect- the chapel prefect. A lot is expected from you as a prefect. At all times should your uniform be neat, you must also do well in tests and exams. In their words “perfects represent the school,” and that is why we must put in the best into our grades.

I had no problem smashing through good grades. But things took an interesting turn when mathematics became my enemy. Mathematics was actually my favorite subject. I don't know what went wrong, all I know is that I started hating the subject all of a sudden. I struggled to get an average score on mathematics tests and exams. As a prefect, it is pertinent that you do well in mathematics. If not, your role as a prefect might get stripped away from you.

Even though I dislike mathematics, I always make sure I prepare well for tests and exams. There was a time when we had a mathematics test. Only heaven knows where the teacher took the questions from. Out of 10 questions, I struggled to answer 5. Out of those 5 questions that I answered, I was only sure of 4. I didn't want to be disgraced publicly. So the next day, I snuck into my mathematics teacher’s office to change my grade. It was a big rule not to enter a teacher's office when he/she wasn't there. I don't know what pushed me to do it, but I did it. Yes, I know I did something wrong. I'm not proud of it.

I snuck into his office. I went with a red pen so I would be able to change my grade. Then, I checked my grade. I got 4 out of 10 questions. You have to get at least half to stay on the safe ship, so I changed my grade from 4 to 5. I snuck out before anyone could notice.

HOW WERE THINGS AFTERWARDS

Luckily, I didn't get caught. If I could go back in time, I definitely wouldn't have changed my grades. Some of my classmates who scored below average got flogged. Although I did get away with it, I learnt a big lesson: shortcuts will do you no good. Instead of taking that shortcut, I could’ve worked harder. Who knows maybe I would’ve gotten more than 5 out of 10 questions? Things could've gotten way worse if my teacher had found out.

Thanks for reading.

Got ya! The cat is finally let out of the bag, let me tag that mathematics teacher😁

It's good you know you did a bad thing breaking the rules then and are remorseful about it now. I believe you are still at the top of your game, as being intelligent is kinda natural sometimes, boosted by hard work though, maybe it was the teacher you didn't like that caused the math phobia

Lols see this guy o, it's the boldness for me.

So you went to your teachers place to utter your score, that's something.

You're lucky you were caught, else it would have been another story.

Hahaha, you got an opportunity to change your grade and you moved it from 4 to 5? You only tried to escape cane, else the scores are almost the same. Next time put it at 8. Hahahaha. Please, don't enter your teachers office again, that's the best. Sometimes, even if we succeed, we feel guilty of what we have done. 😅. That's part of growing up anyways. 😅
