The Itch From The Pitch

I was extremely frustrated today...

Driving around and running some errands for my wife, I downloaded a few podcasts for the afternoon. There were a couple of shows that were recommended to me, so I decided to give them a listen!

The content started out great, the discussion had me hooked and then it happened...

"Buy this product, it's awesome, I use it myself, you can buy lots of it at this website. Buy it buy it buy it..."

O.K., I thought...I'm used to ads in a podcast but this was weird. Right in the middle of it. As the discussions were getting good. No problem, they need to pay their bills...

I kept listening, and not only 10 minutes later came:

"Buy another thing I'm pitching! You need this! It's awesome! Buy it buy it!!!"

The podcast was about 30 minutes long and I had already been subjected to in your face advertising not only 10 minutes into the show. And yup, they ended the show with their 'sponsors ad' as well.

This isn't new though right? We've been force fed advertising since the beginning of time! From the beginning of YouTube videos to Super Bowl commercials, ads are everywhere. And I have been in the 'marketing' world for 2 decades now, I should be applauding whoever sold this podcaster the ad space right?

Something just rubbed me the wrong way being force fed these ads on a podcast...There's a reason I don't have cable television anymore lol

And I get it, people need to pay their bills and that's fine but doesn't it just feel weird these days?

To be...Pitched?

"Wait a minute Jongo....Didn't you just launch a website that essentially sends ads to people 24/7/365?"

Guilty!

But do you know what's unique about the ListNerds experience for me so far for me at least?

I'm actually LOOKING for certain type of ads inside the platform...I'm scanning for people's Hive blog posts LOL

I know, it's a foreign concept to me as well but this is where I think advertising is headed...

Not so much the ListNerds model, that's way too egotistical of me. But the idea that as a consumer I know WHAT I want and I will pay money for it. And I will seek it out....

Permission based advertising, being rewarded for your time and attention...Whatever you want to call it, I do think we're at the beginning of something very unique in the advertising industry.

There will be the purists that will go down with the ship. They way it works now is effective they will argue. What they are really trying to confirm is their reason for being in business, most are in their comfortable little bubble and will do everything they can to stay away from change.

As an entrepreneur, this too, is a foreign concept to me. If I'm comfortable in business, I'm not taking enough risks. And to me, the bigger risk in traditional advertising and marketing is...Not adapting.

Here's the truth, customers don't want to be PITCHED, but they DO want to buy! So as a marketer and advertiser in today's day and age, our job is to provide them with opportunities to buy, and not force feed what they have no interest in, down their throats.

That being said...

Super Bowl is a few weeks away. And gigantic corporations will spend a small fortune to get your attention in 15 or 30 seconds...It's not dead yet...But the power truly is being shifted from the seller...To the buyer!

What do you think?

Do you count down the seconds before you can 'Skip Ads' as well?

What are some new ways, traditional advertising can adopt and change to the markets?

For me, so far, I've been doing everything possible to stay away from intrusive ads, not only that the time they are displayed cumulatively accumulates to a significant time, they also cost more. Our devices heavily process these contents in the background and algorithmically decides when it's best to display them, costing fortune in mobile data and device processing powers.

But that aside, most ads are not relevant, because I do play some games, advertisers will algorithmically present me video games on ads. It's high time advertisers understood that the old way of cookie based advertising is gone that you pitch products and services to potential customers.

While they are not gold standards, Apples advertising strategy has been commendable for me. Content-based advertising, pitch your product or service by illustrating how it works and provides solutions to common problems. Also, through contents, display how people feel about using your products or services, with this approach, you don't need to coerce us to buy every time, an individual will be moved naturally.

Thanks for the input, this was great feedback!

It's no longer, one size fits all! And I think smart 'advertisers' will adapt and cater to their audience.

I can tell you that posting on Hive and then using ListNerds to 'pull' people to my blog is one of the big wins I have seen. It works. I don't sell hardcore anymore. And I am still earning. It's beautiful.

Now that you speak about ads and how it can work with HIVE and ListNerds. I remember this guy who used to run gambling-like posts, and he had a banner at the end of his posts sponsored for some kind of BBQ sauce from Asia or something like that. I can't remember well. It was weird, but at the same time I thought, "Neat! at least he has an sponsor!". We should have sponsors in HIVE I think, maybe it's not that strange, and it would be very useful, specially for those beginning in the blockchain. Something like, "Oh do you like beer? Can we place an add in your post, we will pay you a 20% for your space in HIVE and if you generate enough views, we will give a 5% more every thousand views or so". I don't know if it's too far-fetched.

Interesting, I haven't seen any ads on Hive posts, other than the standard banners we all seem to post lol But I'm sure there can be creative ways to tastefully do it!

That's why I stopped listening to Tim Ferris, ad after ad after ad.

The podcasts aren't bad though, the google and fb stuff follows you like a shadow 😄 even when you try to turn it off,.

I often watch the ads in order to support the creators and don't skip ads unless there are more than 2.

As for the changes in marketing and the monetization. I have realized that not accepting change has it's consequences and also you lose on the first mover advantage. I mean think about hives payout model and patreon, for years I watched it but took action last year or so. Going late gives reduced rewards so moving as the change comes is necessity.

I think intrusive ads these days are replaced with influencer marketing. I am pretty sure the Listnerds can break into this and model like "earn Hive to send and read Ads to the list" would work as it benefit for the both parties.

That's the approach that I think will work long term....When more than one party wins, everyone does. Advertiser and potential customer!

Just look at youtube, literally unskippable ads that to back to back. Its true ads has lost its value now. It just irritates us instead to lead us to buy it.

I'm actually LOOKING for certain type of ads inside the platform...I'm scanning for people's Hive blog posts LOL

Yes, List Nerds also working as NewsLetter for others. Your reading articles and Upvoting. Indeed it's helping.

What are some new ways, traditional advertising can adopt and change to the markets?

Instead of forcing to see ads, may be collaborating with already good products and introducing us with them by giving coupons etc. May be the right choice. Cause this way customer himself search our product and comes rather than forcing him

Lately I see a lot of Mails in my Inbox Its crazy.

Yeah mail is really starting to pick up in ListNerds!

I would never buy a single thing that is being pumped into YouTube ads. If anything, it makes people dislike your brand more lol

I hate ads with a passion, however I go through my Listnerds inbox to collect some MAIL token, I'm curious to see if my future mails there can drive some attention to my blog. Now I just need to write something 😂
Regarding Superbowl, I break my rule to not wacth ads again. There are some quality material there, at least was a few years ago.

I have given up on ads on Youtube. Although some people might not like it, but I just block out the ads and get on with life. I do disable the shield on sites like LeoFinance and other sites that I truly want to support. I think an image is probably the easiest way to pull someone in. I'd rather not get force fed a TV ad and a image ad conveys the subject enough.

The YouTube stuff is really bad now. They seem to make you sit through the entire ad as well, no more skipping after 5 seconds lol

The problem in my humble opinion is that advertising is denigrated. Too many ads, too many times. You don't have to see America's favorite soda brand 500 times a day to want to buy it. There should be fewer and better paid spaces for them to be really effective.
By the way, despite the publicity, I don't drink that brand of soft drinks. They throw their money at me, they annoy me and of course I don't speak well of that brand with my acquaintances.

That's exactly it....I don't know if that 500th Coca Cola ad I saw...Will finally make me buy a coke lolol

I do count those 5 seconds before I press skip ads. And, if it is longer than the 5 seconds wait, i will go do something else. I get your point on buyers dictating the timing and the topic of the ads they want to see. Brave is doing the same with their ad campaigns. I get the ads based on my browsing habits. Although they claim to not have your browser data. My point is, it is more palatable for users to receive ads based on their interest. It should not be forced to us but packaged nicely and gently.
For those podcasts, I am so pro by now, I know the exact time I should skip forward to get to the content. Btw, I am listening to your podcasts/videos/livestreams and you need to coach me on how to win splinterlands battles :)

Ha ha ha ha I'm still learning but slowly I'm getting the hang of the game!

That's the future though, similar to what Brave is doing. it's why I thought StumbleUpon was such an amazing resource from a few years ago...The more you used it, the better the sites you would see. Same type of model could work in advertising.

"...the idea that as a consumer I know WHAT I want and I will pay money for it. And I will seek it out...."

The free market has no brain, but it works because the individual actions of producers and consumers who DO have brains create an information web that "magically" finds the equilibrium price. The future is in marketing to smart people who know what they want.

I think the people that nail that, will have such a powerful tool at their disposal.

Very interesting, you got me scratching my head thinking 🤔

Ya, I watch the second, I skip ads, I even mute my TV for most ads.

I have seen ads that turn me off from a product.

I think they are spending for their demographic and the rest of us does not matter.

What I do like, is every day people, or some of the greats in the world that can talk like every day people. They can convey a message. And in doing that I am more likely to buy.

If any of that just made sense.

Permission based advertising, being rewarded for your time and attention.

Not sure if this is connected somehow to what one blockchain calls as the "attention market." When I heard it the first time, I was puzzled. I was actually surprised the way the white paper describes it like an untapped treasure chest sitting in front of us and waiting to be opened. But the problem is many social media users are not aware of its existence.

I need to do a better job of pushing my Hive posts over on List Nerd. I just know that most of my posts are purely informational. I am just sharing, not trying to sell something or push a certain agenda. I just feel like it isn't the right vehicle to promote my work. I know I am probably wrong in feeling that way, but I do.

The majority of the messages on ListNerds now that I really dive into, are all informational. And mostly try to get people to engage with the Hive audience. Big change in how these things have traditionally been branded.

I am not this old but I have watched some replays of old shows back in the late 50s early 60s where the TV commercial was wrapped in the plot. So Father comes home from a long day's work and Mom has coffee ready for him at the door, next thing you know Father & Mother are doing a TV commercial for the brand of coffee that sponsored the show that week.
Most commercials are a huge waste of time. In a 30 minute show, a person is subjected to 10 to 13 minutes of advertising. I canceled cable TV back in 2014 and have never looked back.
Commercials or a pitch of any kind is hard to sit through especially when you did not ask for it.
BTW thanks to you, Eliana, and Blain for making ListNerds on Chain a reality. Proof of Mail works!!

Slowly, the tide is changing. Less of that blatant in your face forced stuff...And much more permission based! But even better when everyone wins, seller and buyer!

It's funny how a lot of people (and myself 😄) using Listnerds are mostly looking for Hive posts and quickly deleting aggressive ads.
It made me think that maybe marketers need to use Hive posts like a bridge. It would be a better deal for everyone. Marketers would still do a profit with the post even when people are not interested in the final product (and they would have a way higher chance to get their mails upvoted).
People would still be incentivized to engage with the post to earn crypto and maybe would learn about a product they need in the process. It's a way better feeling than being spam dirty direct ads in the face lol.

Yeah and it'll take some time. We had 20 plus years of people using those type of programs for one purpose...To pitch something!

Now we're seeing a change where people are trying to pull people to their blogs to continue the conversation. That's powerful!!

0

There are a lot of niches which can be filled with different types of engagement. Currently I am looking at the Listnerds emails and choosing which of the daily emails will get my 2 votes. I still don't know if the down vote has a purpose/use case. It will probably come down to time management and limiting the amount of time spent on a specific project per day.

0

The big use case is that if I start seeing my mail getting a lot of downvotes, I know I wont get it verified, where i miss out on ListNerds rewards. But also, more importantly, it changes the way I should be 'mailing' people. Improving my copy, improving the wording and headlines.

The list nerds model will be the wave of the future it does not jam up any of my email boxes and I get them all as there are no spam filters, so as a sender you know that many emails will get threw.

U tube used to be good but now they way to many ads on there for me I just do not even go there anymore unless I want to watch a certain persons video.

I think you and Blain have come up with a winner.

I understand that there will be advertising going on. I dont think I am going to miss the
Super Bowl ads as I wont be watching the Super Bowl game. I will miss seeing the Budweiser Clydesdales. Anyway I am one who if I feel to much pressure to buy, I will not buy, instead just leave. The same goes for shopping, I go out to get specific items and that is what I want.

0
0
0.000
avatar

That's my feeling too. If pressured, the choice is...Don't buy. So marketers need to remember that and present value, allowing a buyer to WANT to buy instead of throwing it in their face all the time.

I think ads are going to be a dying breed. The only reason to have them is via opt in. In other words, get paid to watch the ads.

Just like Listnerds, I am happy to be getting spammed each day. I am paid to do it.

Do you count down the seconds before you can 'Skip Ads' as well?

Oh yeah. Most often I turn off sound too.

Mentality is changing. There are so many people nowadays (especially younger or middle-age generations) who have their TV sets as ornaments or only to watch their own selection of uninterrupted programs.

Consumer on the verge of web3 understand HE or SHE holds the power. Roles are reversed.

I dislike the ads thing especially on YT. There should be an option to choose to view the ad if you want not showing it to my screen as if I were in a cinema.

Another bad one is pop-up ads from websites that are still trying to figure out how life is..!

Most times it's annoying. But yet a business cannot do without advertising you.

What I just prefer is a viewer's option to choose to check an ad or not. Once this happens, it will filter out good ads away from the bad ones as well as those ads that will just waste someone's time.
