The Formula Revisited - How To Grow On Hive!

I shared an image I created today on Leo Threads and around social media as well...

It's a topic I've brought up countless times in the past and if you search the chain, you'll find a few posts about it. The good ol' 5-500-5000 formula!

So why am I writing about it again tonight? The topic came up in our Discord earlier where a few people raised concerns about how hard rewards are to come by on the chain consistently.

Let's look into this a bit deeper!

But first, a quick refresher...

55005000.png

Haven't heard of the 5-500-5000 formula? Here's how it works....

Each day, you engage with a minimum of 5 members of the community. That means curating, commenting, asking questions etc. Just get 5 new people every day to get to know you. Add value to their journey and expect NOTHING in return. Literally do this everyday because it's how we add value to others first.

This attracts good things! Some of those good things will be more people on Hive following your account. It may come in the form of upvotes too, but for me, my goal was always to build a network on Hive. Your goal, is to hit 500 followers ASAP!

And finally, through dollar cost averaging, effort cost averaging, and attracting people to your journey...You should aim to reach 5000 Hive Power.

A few notes about this plan...

1. The first step doesn't have to 'stop' at 5 members! That should be the minimum each day. The more, the merrier!

2. It's critically important to not get all excited and then two weeks down the road, you give up because everyone didn't upvote you. This is a 'formula' that takes compounding interest into play. When you stop, you basically use up all the effort you have put in and then you have to jump back in and start building again. Don't stop, keep showing up!

3. Yes, dollar cost averaging means....Spending some of your fiat into this stuff! Put some skin in the game! Now that doesn't mean that you have to break the bank and mortgage your house to buy Hive Power. But when you get an extra few bucks, power it up!

And I guess the biggest disclaimer and complete transparency of this example has to be this...

I literally, lived this!

I've mentioned this before but for the sake of this post I think it needs repeating. I did NOT come into Hive with a bunch of disposable income or a huge following in the crypto space. I showed up and just kept being in front of people on chain for over half a decade.

Read that again....I've put in the effort here for going on 6 years now. Which means, I didn't jump off the bus when times got tough and I kept showing up. When you combine this with a genuine desire to add value to the blockchain guess what happens...

A few rebuttals that might appear:

  • "You have 3000 plus followers now, easy for you to say!" To that I answer, I had 0 followers, I'm no whale and no one is banging down my door daily to hang out with Jongo lol I got that many followers because I'm following the 5-500-5000 formula.

  • "I do all this and still get no results!" To that I ask, look at your content and engagement and then take a look at what some of the top earners on the chain do. And while you shouldn't compare yourself, ask yourself what they are doing differently than you are and adjust accordingly.

  • "I'm not knowledgable in crypto, no one cares what I write!" Fun story, when I first joined all I wrote about was crypto and my lack of knowledge around it. I got zero support. Then I used Hive for what it truly is, WHATEVER YOU WANT IT TO BE! And things got a lot more enjoyable! Find your passion, find your community and plug into it!

how22.png

Here's a little image that you can print out, or use whenever you like. It's a bit of self-accountability. And I'm not guaranteeing things, but I just don't believe you can lose when you follow this model each and every day on Hive.

Every day, ask yourself if you have done all you can to add to Hive. And then check it out. Every day!

Do this for the next 12 months and then come back and tell me how your journey is progressing ;)

It does work. It all works.

I mean... mostly I do not have the means to power up Hive from fiat. No spare money... quite the opposite really.

So then a person has to double down on providing content and engaging or else just be happy with whatever you get.

For those people saying they know nothing about crypto... sure... but I have made Hundreds of dollars blogging about my garden... the same for cooking food. As well as my Warhammer hobby and my Fiction writing... so... write what you LIKE into the correct community!

Good job Jongo! As always! Keep on Hiving!

When I first started to build businesses online, I was literally...On the streets. Had nothing, but what I did have was time. So I invested that.

So many ways we can invest here and it's most definitely not only fiat :)

Indeed and your time is valuable. Especially when a person puts value on their own time!

This model only makes sense when there is a lot of time span to compare different points. Meaning, indeed, it is only when one follows it steadfastly that the person can see great results after a very long while.

And aslo, really, taking more than one is giving isn't in any way "moving forward." Got to power up and put in some skin to grow.

It's something @nathanmars once told me (I miss that guy too)

"You need some skin in the game!"

It makes things a lot more 'real' lol

Indeed! And, thinking about it, putting some skin in the game changes everything. It's a whole new mentality, and a different game play.

I remember before this formula I was barely getting any vote or even attention on the tutorials. After following this formula. I got some clout and that kind of helped get support too. Having people around and following helps a lot. This formula works! And the day when you don't follow this you have to change and adjust for next day to compensate.

This is so awesome to read. It's so easy for me to jump up and down and say 'this works' but to hear it from you, that's epic. Thanks so much for sharing!

1 day... I hope to write a post that results in upvotes with a comma, and no 0.00s...

Apparently Hive doesn't believe in commas [dreams shattered] :'(

This is an excellent idea to grow. If we don't have fiat, we have time to spend on engagement. I copy your post and save it on my computer with the name ROAD MAP. I will follow this road map to reach the goal. Can you tell me about some contests to participate? I think contests have two advantages, First is engagement with the new community, and second some prizes to Power up your HP. Your posts are always helpful for newcomers like me.

They used to be every where, but I haven't seen many these days. I'm sure the tag 'contest' should still pull up some decent ones?

Ok Sir I search the tag contest. I think It will help.
Sir, I have a question. If we write opinions of crypto experts in our own words and mention that it is their opinion then this is plagiarism or not?

I wouldn't go anything that you even think might be going down that road. I'd say everything you write on Hive should be 100% original.

It's a good formula. Because the numbers don't really matter, but sort of in that order. But of course (like everything in this world) it takes effort and perseverance.

Agreed. The blessing and curse is...Most don't put in the effort! Which means, it's easy to stick out but you still need to put in the work.

It's a good strategy but I think I skipped step 2 but got step 3 complete. It is a good way to grow though because engagement is definitely the way to go and staking more Hive will show how committed you are.

Yeah I'm sure there are lots of different paths for sure, I can only write what I've lived lol And for me, that was a metric that really mattered to me to 'judge' my progress when I was starting out.

These are helpful tips, one other thing I'll add is that constant powedown chases away potential supporters as well. Building the chain while building oneself to establish a win-win situation is better.

Thanks for the tips

That's a really good point. The last thing anyone wants to see is constant powerdowns. I know sometimes we need to, I know I did last year, but overall, we want long term thinking and investing.

It is a good formula that I try to fulfill every day, I just need to reach 5000 HP

Slow and steady! It happens, and then things really start to get rolling.

This is a great framework to follow as a starting point when one doesn't know what or how to grow on chain. Quality engagement is a key cornerstone and the results will compound over time. Momentum also matters, start and finish, not start and then stop.

Agreed. And so many lost their momentum when they stop showing up...That's critical to really get things moving!

As much as I would advise people to write and engage to gain exposure, buying hive is the surest way to go. Other options require you depending on factors that are outside your control. There is little correlation between consistent and result on hive. You can be very active and still not see the required result because you are active in the wrong place. However, for those who do not have the purchasing power I will advise that they take the long route by building social capital.

Yeah I know for me, it was nickel and dimes trying to get extra funds into Hive. But I kept adding on, every chance I got. Small things add up!

I firmly believe that the 5-500-5,000 formula is the best model in Hive being living proof of it. You know that I once said in one of your posts that I am genuinely inspired by your journey here in Hive, from starting Hive through the rock bottom with no fiat, and then as I look at you now, you are great, amazing, and successful to my view.

I always love to read inspiring stories like this because honestly, when I entered the Hive ecosystem, I felt so innocent. Yes, I may know how to post and write, but what lack to me is to be guided through the whole process. And that it is a light in the heart to encounter humble people like you with incredible progress.

So, this post is like gold to me. From top to bottom, so worthy. Many thanks for sharing your best experiences in Hive my dear friend. Blessings to you and I always wish you success.

I think the most vital element is to show up daily without expecting anything in return.

Oh absolutely! So easy to say, but hard to do. We always 'expect' something, but when we dont, and just enjoy the journey...Good things happen.

I think I still have a ton of followers from the bot days when you were gaining like 50 followers a day but they were all those worthless bot accounts. Those were some crazy times. I am guessing many of those accounts never went away, they are just dormant now. This does seem like a good rule of thumb to follow!

I came across this earlier on Twitter and really liked the idea!
Engaging 5 times is now on my to-do list and I will also apply it to Twitter as well.

I'm a morning person so I try to do the minimum engaging in the morning. The good thing about this is that everything else will be extra and like you said, it doesn't have to stop there. Thanks for sharing, great idea!

Yeah exactly, doesnt have to stop at 5, that's just a guide...The more the better :)

Engagement definitely works, and really ought to be the backbone of people's strategy if they really want to go somewhere with Hive.

Your system also works out to be a good "sorting mechanism," though... between the ones who are serious about growing their presence on Hive, and the ones just looking for "easy money."

The whole engaging with people when you first join, it definitely works and was something I went in hardcore with when I first join back in the days of the unspeakable place before the far superior Hive!

I basically thought: "If I want to get somewhere and grow in the community, I want to just find people making an effort in their posts, comment something worthwhile and meaningful of at least 1 paragraph and engage with people."

It worked well and I only couldn't do it much after a while because I got quite busy and had a lot of personal life things happen. But I need to look to engage more again while I continue to push forward in life, grow again on Hive and keep supporting people in the community even further!

Great explaination of something worth bringing to people's attention.

I just purchased 333 CTP tokens (on Tribaldex) so I can reward and up-vote posts. I can see them in my Hive Keychain, but I don't seem able to vote.
