Hive's Killer App

After yesterday's podcast, I have been contemplating a lot of what was discussed. And something really hit me, that I wanted to bring up in today's post.

We know, Hive is awesome! We have the coolest applications, the most vibrant and passionate people, but we just can't seem to get mass adoption no matter what we try. Marketing campaigns, Splinterlands' success, 3speak, Leo...Take your pick, these are all amazing projects that can literally change everything in web 3...

So how come people are arriving here in droves?

There's plenty of people that will tell you their solution and I'm sure it's all very valid. I think onboarding is critical, making sure it's easy for anyone with zero technical knowledge to get started right away. This isn't a revelation by any stretch...

But after yesterday's talk, it's clear to me we have something that once people 'understand' it's power, the flood gates will open.

What is 'it'?

Community.

Like I have mentioned countless times on this blog and was brought up in the show yesterday, people are our power here on Hive. In a day and age of AI taking over the headlines and uncertainty at every turn, I truly believe relationships...Are the new currency!

And that comes from community.

It comes from people sharing a passion. Going through wins and losses together. Experiencing the high and lows of each other's journey and we can be a part of that right here.

Think about major crypto projects out there...What do they have?

Usually a Twitter account, and a SubReddit.

Hive has all that, plus a community built right into layer 1. This is beyond powerful once the rest of the world sees what is being built here. And of course, that brings up the next question...

So how does the world wake up and start becoming aware of this amazing blockchain?

Here's my solution....

i_socialcrypto.png

I'm beating a dead horse here because I've been over this a LOT over the years but it begs repeating...

Be a product of the product!

I don't blog on Medium, I use Peakd.

I never upload videos to YouTube, I use 3speak.

I'm trying to stay away from Twitter, because Threads is much more exciting!

Instagram is so 2019, I'm on Liketu.

And we can go on and on....

The point is, this is something we each can do right now. No marketing budget required, we literally just need to show the world that we are using these apps each and every day. Will this translate into millions of new users on Hive?

No, I don't think so. But what will happen is what I mentioned above...We become a product of our product. We use a truly decentralized web 3 blockchain, and apps that are built right on top of it.

We show the world, why community is king here. And I truly believe, maybe I'm dreaming, but this is what matter when it comes to building Hive for the future.

The killer app, is the people. Now it's just time for the world to see what we already know!

We have to also think of the account as an asset. When we think of things like that, we would slowly put in the efforts. In instagram, youtube we expect results overnight and maybe that does happen but in reality that is not easy on Hive. So we have to drip feed content here, interact and distribute our content all over. That is the creator way.

That's a great point. In a second, we could lose it all on the traditional platforms. We have true account ownership here.

To add, Cast.Garden is a good replacement for Spotify and iTunes, which exploit artists and steal the bulk of their gross earnings before taxes take 15-30% off the top of the remainder!

Also, Chat.peakD is being built to be a Discord replacement!

Excited to try out Liketu, since i have so many travel photos from the past 13 years~!

Cast.Garden

oooh nice! Hadn't heard of it. Just saved the address. Any thoughts on if it's better than aureal.one?

i only found out about Cast.Garden through its developer, Ken, on Discord, and then found out that @crimsonclad was a major streamer on there since YouTube decided to remove her music station streams -_- I have not tested out aureal.one before, but I have heard of it. I welcome competition anyway, it leads to the best product being brought to market

Oh interesting. I'll have to check those out for sure. I keep forgetting about Sting Chat too. Need to get back into the habit of logging in.

Your right but we still have the two biggest problems.

  1. Onboarding.
It needs to be as simple as signing up with your twitter or google account and start using these accounts. That is why splinterlands was able to sign up so many people, they had light accounts. Hopefully leo will have the same push. every other app is over complicated.

  2. Self sustaining.
Too many apps are dependent on the hive blockchain to provide running costs from the DHF and also for it's rewards structures. Over 95% of the projects that i have witnesses here some of which could be great, ultimately failed as they had no value proposition. No business plan and no income. They need to be able to fund their own running costs and the token behind them. Again splinterlands and LEO ar ethe only two earning revenue.

Peakd is the greatest waste on the blockchain as it's an amazing app. So far beyond what medium or other sites can provide but they should be earning ten of thousands a month in ad revenue. Money that could be used to fund their running costs rather then the DHF or even to buy Hive form the market and distribute to the community which would add to the reward structure and also help the token price. External money buying hive form the market every month.

Unfortunately these are still the same issues from 5 years ago and have not been fixed on a large scale outside of a couple of projects which have created their own solutions.

Until we see projects built for the lowest common denominator that can sustain themselves long enough to scale we will probably stay at this level for a long time yet.

Yeah a lot of these blockchain projects are against advertising. I think that's why I really do love what LEO has on the horizon. Hope to see them using that ad revenue for token buys and distribution. Would just encourage us to power up!

We should all try to use the applications if we can and that is the only way to make sure those new applications start to flourish. I don't visit Twitter or most of the other sites to read posts. However, I can't seem to get away from Youtube and sometimes 3speak seems to have issues with videos.

I still use all the web 2 platforms, but my focus is always here.

Basically I move in the Hive ecosystem which is fantastic. I don't think the problem is there. The difficulty is in the adoption that is difficult. I'm looking forward to seeing if Leo introduces Lite accounts that could change everything.

It comes down to ease of onboarding and that our friends and family aren't here yet.

It's indeed the community that's sets Hive apart from everything else out there. The 'intangible glue' that keeps things together. Hive serving as a platform for web3 communities will be a nice prospect for outsiders. Because there's power in communities in their ability to make a difference and effect change.

Oh absolutely. It's cliche, but there is true power in people. Community is always king.

Yes, community! In web2.0, I'm a nobody. I got a few warm words there, but they were my brothers and sisters. That's it.

Here, a year later, I really feel like I'm being read. I'm being answered and I'm being complemented. I end up growing every day because I write every day and read my people every day. We grow together in the end.

Yes, community! 100%!

One of the good things about Hive is that it has everything you can ever think of
It has threads like Twitter, videos like YouTube, blogs and more...
Hive is the best social network

Absolutely. And it keeps getting better and better each year. I'm so excited to see where we will be in a few years from now.

I'm going to pay for Twitter Blue but only because I see it as an investment for driving traffic to Hive. Twitter is a cost centre, Hive is a profit centre.

Instagram is so 2019, I'm on Liketu.

Lol oh no😂😂😂😂

The community, suppport and enlightenment makes Hive an incredible platform, if I was to choose any other social media platform, I’d choose Hive over and again.

For the record I’m totally mad at PeakD, it’s my favorite frontend but for now it’s not even working on my phone 😭😭😭

Check out the Hive keychain app, and then use it's browser to load up Peakd. Should work flawlessly!

I’ve been doing that for days now, it’s still not working

Well said Jon, community really is the strength of Hive, and selecting to use the dapps on Hive rather than on Web 2 is a great way to further the adoption and development of Web 3, enjoy your weekend and stay awesome.

Hey do you still poke around Noise? I haven't been there forever. Not sure if I should fire it back up, to promote Hive lol

@liketu interests me. I thought that other instagram clone we used to have was the killer app but people thought it was rewards pool rape. I hope we've moved on from that. I also think @actifit is great because fitness apps are popular. Then building your brand and community is key. It will work. It seems we've built it so lets see if they come. I think curating liketu and actifit posts on threads is important

Those are two apps I truly believe have some of the biggest potential here.

I absolutely love both of them!
