Do Better CoinGecko!

Twitter is the gift that keeps on giving...

The absolute insane things you get to read everyday in the crypto space, truly is mind blowing.

In today's epic journey on web 2, we got treated to a real gem...

Courtesy of CoinGecko.

Ready for it, it's awesome....

I'll get into my thoughts about this in a minute, but for now, let's highlight some of the amazing members of this community, and their epic replies to this...

First up, I give a nice golf clap to @vaultec for the reply. And I agree completely, someone needs to show the definition of decentralized to our friends at CoinGecko!

The legendary @lordbutterfly decided to help CoinGecko out, with a brief overview of what should not be considered decentralization. Bravo sir!

And let's just do one more, because I'll get carried away. A great reminder from @guruvaj

Hey look, Hivians CARE about CoinGecko, and we're just trying to help them with their definitions ;)

Seriously though, this brings up a big problem that is disease in the crypto space. I blame this on the powers that be, you know, the 'influencers' that love to scream decentralization and web3...But as we see, don't even know what it truly means.

How do we fix this?

I really don't know how much more Hive can do.....We literally live, breathe and die this stuff. So we're actually products of our product. However I still think our use of Web2, should be used to call this insanity out like we did today.

These companies that make millions off of crypto, rarely actually use...Crypto.

What's worse....Is that now they are labelling projects that are clearly not decentralized, the most 'active'. One look into Steemit, and you know it's all bots. So inflated numbers gives them the second overall spot?

Really?

Odysee, as much as they say they are decentralized, are not. But they at least have real users.

Gab, Mastadon, Mirror, Bluesky, Minds, Lenster, MAIN, Snort.....Never even heard of half of them. But the ones I did, aren't even on blockchains....How on earth can they be decentralized?

But look at all the Hive based applications on the list. Real users, real decentralization, real web3.

I do wish CoinGecko would truly represent this industry with providing their viewers, readers and users with information that is legit. This seems like another case of 'they pay for advertising on our platform, so we'll list them'....Who knows. But that's always how Web2 stuff has worked in the past.

So there's lots of work to do....And Hivians always show up. I'm so honored to be a part of this community because anytime we see 'bull', we always show up on Twitter to inform and correct.

Is it falling on deaf ears?

Not sure, but I know I'll keep highlighting what really is.....Decentralized web3!

Will coingecko even see this article? Are their any coingecko staff using hive? It would be quite interesting to see.

That infographic is the worst pile of trash I've seen in a long while. Some how steemit is like reddit and that many users lol while hive is the same damn thing and not considered reddit. Better yet they legit put two hive front ends on the graph. The hell is going on lol

Aside from all of this, they placed Hive blog, Peakd, and Ecency as separate entities, despite the fact that they're frontends to the same back data. All it takes is a few minutes of research to clarify this before publishing something that's viewed by, potentially, hundreds of thousands of people. This type of carelessness is embarrassing, but unfortunately who will know aside from the people who use Hive? Ov vey!

I think that's the biggest issue for me. Just 2 minutes of research, and then you get the proper categories for these front ends.

It seems to me that whoever wrote this was working and thinking with their back end. 😉

Steemit is still alive? I thought they were dying. I don't know what price they do have and what usecase they are serving. I suppose as long as there are people funding it and churning goes on it would stay alive. But I am not surprised to see quote of odysee, it got court order to close decentralization yet it survives. We need more external authors highlighting hive in their blogs outside this way there would be some positive press.

Just filled with bots and upvote circles. No idea how people even see a penny of value there.

Another thing they officially stated but is messing that whole ranking up is: they didn’t take users of mobile Apps into consideration. Just have a look in the post I did about this yesterday. As you said: a lot of unmotivated bad research. 🫤

Why the hell did they put 3 FRONTENDS of Hive? this is already chatgpt level writing.

I think it's a paid piece and their definition of decentralized is not the same as ours. It's a disgrace and I hope they do better. There is a clear person in charge for most of the top-most platforms

God, how rotten this world is...
Thank you for this post. I think we should do it more often until the whole forgery thing becomes obvious!

I was amazed when I saw those high numbers for Steemit, didn't know they were mostly bots until now. There definition of decentralized is a bit biased in my opinion. Most of the ones on the list are just web 2.5 and clearly not web3.

Yeah I agree. They just say 'crypto' and 'web3' and then all of a sudden it's decentralized.

Fortunately, they can't fool people who know the difference between them :)

I don't know how Steemit can be ahead HIVE. Perhaps, due to the high post rewards on Steemit.

I like to use CoinGecko to get updates on pricing but this is hellishly disappointing. Also, seriously, an alternative to Medium where the one that shall not be named is an alternative to Reddit...do they even know that Hive was hardforked off the same foundation blocks? Whoever wrote this is a fuckwit. 'Nuff said.

It's amazing because just 2 minutes of research is all they needed to do the right thing...But alas.

One thing I notice on Hive! I notice most of the contents are concentrated toward Hive. I cannot educate myself on other blockchains outside of Hive. Maybe it is like an echochamber!

I dunno, I see people talk about everything here, especially in a LeoFinance environment. But it is Hive heavy for sure. Which is fine because to me, there is no other chain that comes close lolol

The biggest issue I see from that list is they need to bundle all the Hive stuff together. That immediately pushes them into the top five if not the top three. I guess that just shows how decentralized we are that they see all of them as separate entities. Speaking of deep dives into crypto stuff on Twitter. Do you follow the Confessions account? Lots of crazy stuff on there each morning! Sad stories, happy stories, crazy stories... You get it all!

Thanks for sharing. There is certainly a lot of confusion regarding decentralization. It would be nice if there were more consistency in its use. Great that the Hive community is pointing out what to use is obvious. !CTP
