Can Liketu Be Hive's Answer To Appics?

avatar

hiveliketu.png

Let's go back in time....

A few years ago, everyone was VERY excited about the things that ere being built on the legacy chain. The promise of real Web3 was here and so many entrepreneurs seemed to flock to the blockchain to build...New versions of popular social media platforms.

One of those applications was Appics.

logoappics.png

This application seemed to have it all! From the team running it, to the entire concept of an 'Instagram-like' application, built on the blockchain...We were all very excited about it!

The chain split and became Hive but Appics didn't really follow...Or did they? I really have no idea, I just know it was a brilliant idea that never seemed to be realized on the current blockchain.

Now here's the problem with our beloved Hive!

The long form purists are still very much a vocal majority on chain. Bite sized pieces of content was always looked down upon especially when it came to the rewards pool. People got very upset when a picture of a cat ended up for a hundred bucks in rewards.

More on that in a bit, but something caught my eye a few months ago and I decided to poke around in the app...

Liketu!

Home-Liketu.png

I stumbled across this app a few months ago when it first came to Hive and forgot about it....

Mostly because, life...But I was never a big Instagram user. Mainly because I suck at taking picture LOL However recently I thought it would be cool to document the life of my new puppy and figured it would be a great idea to use @liketu with a unique account for the journey...

(Give her a follow @shebatherottie)

Liketush.png

Currently, as far as I know, there is no mobile application for Liketu. So you must use their web-based front end. And I do enjoy the experience. The site is laid out nicely and as you can see, very easy to navigate and find your way around!

It's really not complicated at all, simply drag and drop the pictures you want uploaded, add some text and tags...Presto! Liketu content!

Which brings me to....

Will Hive support short form content that is created using an app like Liketu?

Or does it need a second layer token to really get accepted from the 'long form content' side of Hive?

I'm concerned that here is an application that is fantastic, very easy to use and has a MASSIVE market potential...Yet I rarely see it even mentioned on Hive?

Things like this and #ProjectBlank could be massive wins for this blockchain!

I know, I know...We MUST write War & Peace for it to be considered 'of value' on chain, however the majority of people that use any website, application or social media create...Micro content!

A Tweet, a pic on Instagram, a TikTok video...

This is where the masses are and something like Liketu could cater perfectly to that audience!

I'd LOVE to see a mobile app and I'm not sure if that's on the agenda for the dev team but, the potential man....

I'm so excited to see what Liketu becomes!

Have you tried it yet?

What's your experience so far with the application?

I'd love to hear your thoughts on Liketu but also how we can take apps like this, and share them to the world...

=> Check out Liketu here!

Only problem I see with Liketu is that they mark your photos with a watermark like they own it x)

This is a setting that can be turned off. It only watermarks images when browsing on front-ends off liketu and even then the user can opt out.

I see they answered but yeah, I found the option to turn off the watermarks inside the settings.

I like the watermarks though, anything Hive related I enjoy promoting so I'll share Liketu photos on other social media.

Am a photographer lover, having it simple without having to write ✍ 500 words about it to be considered quality.
I used Appics back then, unfortunately they didn't move over.
I've seen Liketu but yet to use it, I want something mobile slick and easy to use, Dapplr seem to have it but extended in a DApp for content creating like Peakd.

We have to be practical and realistic about needing Instagram-like DApp on Hive.

See reply with @liketu in the comments for the mobile app.

I don't see anything unpractical about having an instagram-like app on hive. We (HIVE) seem to be perfectly fine rewarding mercenary capital a higher yield (HBD@20%) than risk-taking laborious capital[HP] (even though it is the latter which backs the former) and yet we get our underwear in a twist about a few dollars on content which has the potential to drive the consumer side of social media.

Network effects are important, as is broad consumer appeal. We can't all be creators, we also need a healthy cohort of consumers of content. The last time I checked, the most popular platforms in the world today are all shifting towards short duration, or micro-attention content, be it instagram, or tiktok, or twitter. As jongolso has pointed out, this is a trend already unfolding before our eyes.

Context is quite important when establishing whether something is of value. There is no easy way to use any inputs from what is stored in a post to determine the 'value' of it objectively. Naturally, we pretty much all agree value is subjective. But we often hear things like 'good effort', 'good quality' as if that is a barometer of value - certain they can be, but it wouldn't be much effort for me to write a lot of words, use some fancy jargon, and take some pictures with my expensive camera to supplement. It could easily pass as good quality and good effort even when I don't believe it is.

This is why we have the brain element, and why I do a lot of studies on Brain Energy and how that pertains to the fair value of the price of HIVE. We are a proof of brain platform after-all. But what is most interesting, is that ultimately, we can wave our social justice signals around about how good content with good effort is what determines 'value' all we want - and sure I am not saying that it isn't valuable - but it doesn't necessarily expand the user base, it may not expand the total brain energy input into the ecosystem, and together, might not result in actual net demand for long term investors, for which, we actually need to ascribe value to anything at all.

What can we do about this?

We need to start looking at network effects from users, the communities they form, the downstream effects of growing their network, willingness to purchase stake, willingness to use their precious time and energy to participate as better indicators of what kind of people we should be rewarding.

If Justin Bieber showed up and posted a selfie, I am certain it would set records on trending, and no one would bat an eyelid to whether it deserved the reward it was voted for. And yet, if nobody knew who he was, and what influence he has in the real world, he'd likely be one of thousands of posters who wonder why their posts get no love. Context is key!

At the end of the day, we cannot deny that people enjoy short form content, whether it's pictures, a blurb, or a few second long video clip. We should be more medium agnostic, and focus on the downstream effects brought on by the creator.

I remember ats-david said something which struck a chord with me quite strongly, so much so I actually took a screenshot of it!

ats-david.PNG

Food for thought I'd say!

Many thanks for the response, now with liketu mobile App almost already its time my interests in photography gets revived.

You mentioned network effect, truth with all necessary support for liketu and the team behind delivering top class App the chances of luring photography lovers onto Hive is high and with resource credits being needed to access the chain after the next HF instead of HP delegation onboarding should get a lot easier.

We have a robot ecosystem here capable of accommodating almost anything we can imagine, we just have to make things work for the benefit of the entire Hive ecosystem.

I've got to keep my eyes 👀 on liketu

Pretty cool I think it's crazy possible to mimic successful web 2 applications and build a huge successful platform around them. Honestly surprised no one is working on something like tiktok, or youtube shorts right now. I wish I had a team of devs to do it :D

Besides that does it post to your main hive account? That's the only negative I've found with these alternatives. So I'd need to create a separate hive account for this since it's going to post to my blog as well?

That's how I've been getting around it. From Actifit to Dbuzz and now Liketu, I set up a completely unique account for each platform. I think it'll be that way for me at least, until the 'long form content' folks ease up lol

Yeah it's kind of like those platforms need to not hit Hive directly. I'll have to give it a test it just sucks making new accounts for everything because the content doesn't match up with what others are use to. Should be a way to use a single account and say where and how it gets posts. I'm hoping Leos project blank takes this into account bit time.

Or does it need a second layer token to really get accepted from the 'long form content' side of Hive?

THIS. I'm 100% fine with it on second layer tokens. I don't want it on the base layer though (tweets or quick snaps) receiving a hundred dollars or more.

0
0
0.000
avatar

So the question would be...Why not?

Wouldn't we self-police it? Because I'm guessing the argument would be to protect the rewards pool from abuse?

Curious to see what people think

!CTP

To me it's an experiment that should be done on the second layer. Short tweets or snaps receiving outsized rewards. By experiment I mean whether people will buy the underlying second layer token to support such content. If this second layer token can prove itself to retain or even increase in value over a respectable amount of time, only then would it change the opinion of long form purists like me.

Appreciate the feedback...Question though, would you consider something (sake of argument) like the Mona Lisa...Good content?

I'm not saying people are taking pictures equivalent to the Mona Lisa, but the point is...Art, content, etc...What's the value? I think it's what people determine it to be. Long form has it's place, but I believe short form is critical to Hive's success.

Maybe the mOna Lisa is a bad example lol

I've seen quite a number of liketu posts, but I've not really tried it yet. I'm thinking if I should make posts with my other account and stick to the long format here. I see liketu will launch a mobile app. That will be a game changer, imo.

Appics, I tried to install but for some reason I could not retrieve my earned tokens from before. I have to check that one again.

Ps- I think your cute pup was amongst those I first saw when I checked the liketu page. 😍

The economic models of HIVE and Twitter/Instagram/whatever are too different. Hive is based on a shared finite reward pool (inflation).

On the other hand Twitter/Instagram basically ONLY monetarily rewards people with large followings or whose name have brand value. This is both very mercenary and makes perfect sense in the advertising/sponsorship world.

On HIVE it's possible for an unfamous person to get monetary value from a short tweet or snap. This is acceptable as long as the reward payout is low. Let me ask you this, would this same person get any sort of monetary reward on Twitter/Instagram/Snapchat etc.? Would any advertising firm or sponsorship company pay them? Of course not.

If this same unfamous person then starts getting payouts of hundred of dollars or more for a short tweet or quick pic on HIVE but not having the fame factor to justify it makes no sense. This person is not bringing HIVE any outside attention or free advertising at all and constantly draining the finite reward pool for basically shitposting.

I know this idea is controversial but what is needed is a whitelist for who can earn what for short form content based on the "fame meter". Basically If you're Elon Musk level of famous then you can earn unlimited for a short tweet or pic on HIVE. If nobody has heard of you outside of HIVE then expect your payout to be limited to whatever the community thinks is acceptable.

0
0
0.000
avatar

so you are saying, a level or something to reach before you start getting pay outs for the short form content?

i personally like the rep. system. i know a lot of people hate it, but i use it for a gauge myself...to see how i'm doing lol

0
0
0.000

(Edited)

Actually I meant the level of brand power outside of the Hive ecosystem. Number of followers on other platforms like Youtube, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Something that would bring additional awareness to the blockchain. Rep or number of followers on Hive doesn't really matter as it would bring no additional outside attention or free advertising to the blockchain.

This is why I prefer short form content to be experimented on the second layer first. This is what makes Project Blank (if it ever comes out) so excitiing for Hive.

I'm extremely excited about Liketu, #ProjectBlank and about posting Shorts on 3Speak, but I have to be honest Jon, these may or may not bring as many users as we think. I hope they do but I'm not so sure...

With these social network you need to reach a certain level of network effect to spark real growth. We need to bring our own friends here to create that network effect flywheel. I'm working on this my self. Speaking about Hive as much as possible with friend and family.

0
0
0.000

Fair point but I think you need the apps in place for network effect to even begin. That's my thinking, without short form content, people wont even bother to take a look.

Short form content is really the trend right now. I think long form contents are for intellectuals with big ideas lol. Majority of people do prefer consuming short form content so apps like Liketu and Projectblank could help massively in Hive gaining some traction.

However, the love is still in long form content because we think it's more valuable and takes more time and effort. Why should anyone reward a cat pic with some few lines on text? I think there needs to be some mindset shift, long doesn't always mean valuable and short doesn't always mean not valuable.

Will Hive support short form content that is created using an app like Liketu?

It would be dumb not to do that. Short form content is what we see all around. The most famous and used social media apps are short-form content ones, not blogging. Don't get me wrong, I'm a blogger, I will do that for many years ahead, but we need short form content on HIve. I said it many times on my blog over time. Hive is "too stiff" without short form content. I like liketu and have been using it a few times

You raise an interesting point about frowning upon a certain type of content.

I don't think some disgruntled peeps should have that kind of power and that the popularity or not of any content should just be natural.

If people stopped constantly trying to manipulate and control information all the time just maybe we would be able to work out what the fuck is going on in the world.

Not to mention attacking people through manipulation of finances is such a centralist thing to do why the hell they on a decentralized blockchain in the first place.

I used Liketu once, I like the interface and it's almost the same of Instagram (it could replace it someday, hopefully for Web 3.0) but one problem is that it is laggy on mobile phone.

It will be better if they will adopt Mobile app, sounds a good idea to make it easier for the users to navigate.
