1 reduces dehydration due to direct sunlight

As much as most plants generally need sun light to grow, the heat that comes from the sun reduces the water content of the soil where the fluted pumpkin has been planted

2 prevents seed eating pest

There are pest that do attack the fruits and seeds of different plants boring holes and eventually destroying this seeds till it unable to germinate, some of this pest are found in the soil.

3 increases soil fertility

Decomposed plant parts like leaves and branches act as fertilizer to the fluted pumpkin plant after it has started germinating, it is a good form of organic fertilizer.
