2022 NaNoWriMo Challenge (Nov 1–30)

avatar
(Edited)

Did you know that November is National Novel Writing Month?

The short form is NaNoWriMo, and it’s been long since adopted worldwide to try and encourage writing.

The Scholar & Scribe NaNoWriMo challenge is pretty simple! (No need to actually write a novel.)

✒️ From Nov 1–30: for any post in the following communities, include this tag: #hivenano2022 ✒️

(⚠️ Please follow all the rules of these communities! Wordspam will not be tolerated. Example: Scholar & Scribe is fiction focused. Writing Club is too, and only allows one post per day! ⚠️)

At the end of the month, we will tally up your wordcount for posts in November. Technically, a novel is 40,000 words but we do not require you to reach that many!

This is just a nice bonus challenge for those who were considering participating in NaNo already.

Scholar & Scribe will provide approximately 30 HIVE worth of prizing!

📚 Hive Book Club review challenge

Alongside this challenge, our friends over at Hive Book Club will run a review challenge. If you make a post in Hive Book Club that reviews a piece of fiction written for this challenge (i.e. the story you review includes a #hivenano2022 tag), you’ll be included in a Hive Book Club prize pool consideration.

Hive Book Club’s prize pool will be an additional 30 HIVE worth of prizing!

🎁 Prizing

A future post will reveal the nature of the prizes. In total we have at least 60 HIVE worth, so it’s gonna be juicy!

For writers, your wordcount of #hivenano2022 fiction posts will matter. Obvious word spam will however get you disqualified. Wordy signatures will not be included in the word count. Non-fiction or blogs are only allowed where they fit into a participating community’s guidelines. For example, Scholar & Scribe does not allow non-fiction, so a nonfic blog in S&S will probably get muted, and not count.

For Hive Book Club reviewers, quality reviews will be your ticket to prizing glory.

🤔 Prompt ideas

  • Consider participating in the Dreemport WOTW contests, which happens monthly in S&S
  • There’s usually a monthly invitational writing contest in S&S as well
  • S&S is serial-friendly, meaning you can write multi-part stories

👩‍🔬 Note: this is experimental!

Using wordcount is a tricksy approach. But NaNo centres around producing words, so we're going to give it a shot. Feedback and thoughts are more than welcome :)

I forgot about NaNoWriMo OnO I was so focused on inktober. If I recall correctly, this is also a daily writing thing, right?

Some communities encourage daily writing for sure! My memories of NaNo are mostly around the wordcount though :)

My memory of it was daily writing. But maybe I can give it a try again ;;w;;

if you do it the 'official' way, whatever that mean, it used to be 50 k words and thus a daily average of about 1700. It's not a must, but it sure helps to write daily to keep the momentum going.

I was considering NaNoWriMo and am still not sure whether I'll pull through. 😅 I wanna write something longer than a short story though, getting kinda tired of those. 😁 Regardless, I'll def be reviewing stories so I hope most of you lovely people join! 🙌

Hmm I am doing those ZapFic challenges. Does it count under this challenge since it's fiction (i.e. can I use #hivenano2022)?

Only if the ZapFic is in a participating community—we reached out to Freewriters but didn't hear back!

You could always take inspo from your ZapFics: expand the story a little and post that to S&S or Writing Club with the tag :)

I will probably spend this month to finish my book ( posted on the progress for a long, long time now ). In fact, my current story is basically the offspring of the 50k words that I wrote in November 2019.

I am curious if these kind of posts are also allowed in this community, as I mainly focus on the/ my creative process, my illustrations and share fragments of my writing.

Whatever's the case, I planned to make use of this year's NaNoWriMo to finish my book, so I will probably use #hivenano22

Cheers and good luck to all who partake in this! :^)

Scholar & Scribe tries to moderate content so that it's stories/creative writing only. I think Writing Club might be the better place if you wanted to do things that were a 50/50 blend of writing and author's notes—as far as I know they're a little more flexible in that regard.

Okay, cool. I shared entire stories too, in the past, but have been in editing/ post production phase for quite some time now and prefer to focus on the now. Cheers for your helpful reply!

First time to hear about NaNoWriMo (even the acronym is alien to me 😅). I’m sure it’s going to be interesting so if I have spare time, I’ll make sure to read those posts. ☺️
Good luck everyone!

Hey, Partner, do you think this will help us with our HiveBloPoMo goals for the month? 😉

Oh that's amazing. I started using the tag yesterday.

Would you try it out? Or you'll stick to only your Podcast as planned?

I feel like I already know the answer to this is no... but maybe not?

If I post a story for tomorrow on Leo and use S&S tag, does that count towards my total? Feels dumb to do LPUD not on Leo, but then I also want to get my word count as high as possible here. Dilemmas haha !PIZZA

Haha we are restricting valid entries to the participating communities only—hopefully more can participate in the future! :)

Hi! This is a nice initiative but I'm just seeing it today 😅 Can I retroactively label my November posts with the tag, or is that considered cheating?

I don't think it's cheating, but I can't guarantee that an automated system will recognize it 'cause I don't know how the inner workings... work! Ha. Feel free to try it!
