Russia commence it's first war crime trial against Ukrainian soldiers
Hello #Deepdives commumity! It's a beautiful day to be with you here. Today we'll look at Russia's first war crime trial against and how it can lead to Justice for those innocent Russians killed illegally by the Ukrainian military since the inception of the war in Ukraine. Good evening!
There are laws that guides war and breaching such laws amounts to war crime and crimes against humanity. According to the International Humanitarian Laws, a military targeting largely civilian populated cities and intentionally killing the vulnerable in the society can amount to war crimes.
It's obvious that both Russian and Ukrainian government and military are guilty of these war crimes in different degrees. Several months ago, many Russian soldiers have faced charges and other have been sentenced by the Ukrainian jury over issues relating to war crime charges.
Today being April 4, the Russians have commenced her first war crime trial against a Ukrainian soldier named Anton Cherednik and this is in connection to Russia's military campaign in Ukraine.
Anton Cherednik, a member of Ukraine's naval infantry, faced charges in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don of trying to seize power by force, of using prohibited methods of warfare and of murdering a civilian in Mariupol in March last year in the conflict's early days.
Outside the court, his lawyer Vladimir Bakulov said Cherednik had pleaded "partly guilty" and had requested a meeting with the judge to explain his position. The case will resume next week, Russian news agencies reported.
According to the prosecutor, Cherednik during the early stage of the war detained two people in Russian speaking Mariupol and forced them to speak Ukrainian language and one of them was shot for pronouncing some words wrongly.
Ukraine says Russia destroyed 95% of the city and killed tens of thousands of civilians. It accuses Russia of several war crimes there, including the bombing of a maternity hospital and a theatre where hundreds of civilians were sheltering.
The Russian government have denied Ukraine's allegations and said they've never targeted any civilian populated areas. If I may ask, who then stroke the maternity hospital in Mariupol?
I'll conclude by saying that if we want to remove sentiment asides both the Russians and the Ukrainian government and military should accept the roles they played in dislodging innocent citizens from their homes, while women and girls were raped by soldiers of both warring states.
