Punks on Hive: A sad race to the bottom
To begin with, I know I will always own at least one punk because I really think the idea of owning the character that is in my profile picture. The one I am using right now on my profile picture I plan to just keep. The rest I am trying to flip to buy better punks.
I like the punk I am using on my profile picture so much that I thought about shaving my hair off just to look like it. I did not shave my hair because I hope to buy a punk with hair that actually looks like me.
But the punks flipping will probably never work. They were sold, initially, for 20 SWAP.HIVE each, and right now they are selling for almost 10 on the cheapest end.
My original strategy was to buy the cheapest ones so that the price would go up and I would have a lot of punks worth a lot of money, but it all went wrong and more and more punks were being sold for cheaper and cheaper, I allow can not swallow all that volume. The amount of sales (even at a loss) shows me people lost interest in the punks, which makes me sad.
Look, I still believe the punks have their value for the same reason I want to always keep at least one punk with me, to use in my profile picture, but if others don't see the same value it is worthless.
The app also is disappointingly abandoned. @themarkymark moved on a project about Minecraft and the website of Punks on Hive has not had an update for weeks already.
I sincerely appreciate the last, and only, a big update that Marky did. The original website had a TERRIBLE performance. Eventually, the website was updated and everything became fast and responsive and my hopes were big.
Now we have not had an update for weeks. I am a programmer and I think I should build by my hands my own app to add value to the punks, but I simply do not have the time (yet). I have one full-time job and I am doing 2 freelances on the side to bring extra money. I really wish I could make an app for the punks to revive them, but I simply do not have the time.
The ideas for the app I have, and I wish to build at some point (please, feel free to copy them, I don't care about being credited for it):
- Allow filtering punks by characteristics, for example, hairless or hairy punks, Punks with or without glasses, etc...
- Allow filtering for compound characteristics, so for example I could filter for "haired punks with glasses and trinkets"
- Allow for all those filters above and sort by a price range
Those are initial ideas and when I take my vacations (IDK when it will be) from work I will DEFINITELY build that. I really believe that a better application and more functionalities can resurrect and push the punks to new highs, but for now, it is so dead it makes me wanna cry...
What I am doing for now is UPVOTING EVERY POST ABOUT PUNKS I SEE! It is not much, but it is honest work. The problem is not the site, but the lack of any other functionality for the punks. To stir interest, one has to bring value to the punks, by contests, raffles, tickets, airdrops, giveaways or anything for punk holders. But here it seems, as if there would be ZERO INTEREST by themarkymark to add some value. Maybe he earned enough and now moved on to the next project. But people will be more and more sceptic. I for sure won´t ape in one of his projects anymore. Lesson learned.

@themarkymark is Not abandoning punks, when Punks first minted Marky said in an podcast that he will return to Punks when he has a good idea, so he has been very upfront with us. Also, on top of updating the Market, behind the scenes he has done a lot that no one knows about.
For instance, I have cerebral palsy, impairing my hands by 60% and his update literally made the market unusable for me. So I mentioned it to him in passing and without any expectations, the guy went out reprogramed the entire marketplace, so I could continue using it.
Marky made this to where we can all build on top of Punks, so I started the fan club: Punk Legends on discord to host Punk Giveaways to help build utilities for Punks and I purchased some delegation to curate all the new hive/punk users and to help build the Punk community.
The success of Hive Punks shouldn't all be placed on one person, we can all add value to this project.

hold on you crazy crazies! Hive has a long way to go. so do the Punks. A few weeks is nothing, people need to be able to switch focus on projects and keep their life exciting. Otherwise we just turn crypto in to the same crappy jobs that we are all trying to get away from. Have patience. Owning a hive punk is OG.

Do you, sincerely, think that I am "making shit up"? If so you have a very short sight on your projects and you are bad at taking feedback. I was sincerely hoping you would take this post as an opportunity to clarify how the project is not abandoned but I see you excusing yourself for it by simply saying the price is down because HIVE is up, and that the project is not abandoned without further elaborating about it.
Stop one moment and try to reflect on why did I post. Don't you think that I am just reporting what has been my experience? I have seen investors posting about it a lot and making giveaway after giveaway, but the website, which is the main tool to use the punks, I have not seen updates in weeks and haven't heard about plans.
I remember you took a long time to fix the performance issue. I had to make my own tool to sort the cheapest punks and list only the cheapest because the main website, at first, was unusable from how slow it was. I understand you are very rich (top 20 witnesses, undeniable) and you have a very powerful computer, but the performance issue was terrible terrible! Many Hive users are from third-world countries (including me) and you ignored we existed "well it works on my computer".
Feel free to think I am making shit up. But if you do not point why and how "it is far from abandoned" it shows you are putting little effort.

Panic is contagious and I absolutely love it.
I am purposely not buying right now, because I want even cheaper punks and to get all these shaky hands out of the market.
The thing is, Hive Punks are the one investment where we control how well they do, the more effort I put in today, the more people using Punk avatars tomorrow. Granted, this is the ground floor and this is an extremely high risk investment, if you're looking at it like investment, but I don't have any where near this level of control over any of my other investments. Also, there is always a cooling off period after the hype of any launch and there are always shaky hands, so I've been waiting for the panic to set in, took long enough. lol
If you feel that marky abandoned it and I don't feel that way then get a group of people together that own the punks and promote them with all the things you mentioned above. Anyone can promote the punks.
Also NFT projects that are focused on collectibles rarely have any functionality.
I think what you meant to say, is "I speculated on these, and now I feel afraid they will not hold value".

I said explicitly that I speculated, I said in the post I was buying the cheapest ones trying to flip, so you are right that I speculated but not that I am afraid. I am disappointed, not afraid, because the way they are going lower and lower makes me feel like the punks I own are worthless.
Fear is a term I would use for something in the future, frustration is something I use to describe something in the past/present, so it is frustration, not fear.
I was expecting someone to comment the classic “so do something yourself” because I actually did something myself. When punks launched the main website was unusable because of performance issues, in one day I have put together a tool that loads only the cheapest punks, for performance, and published both the tool and the source code for others to copy me.
I would make more tools for Hive Punks, I am in a group on Discord that aims to make a game with the punks, but because of my main full time job and the freelances I have got I simply do not have the time to do it myself, nor the resources to pay a dev to do it.
I will build, when I have time, but for that we need a healthy community, there are barely 2 or 3 posts a day about punks and price is a reflection of the lack of interest.
I need to finish the freelances I have got so that I can put the time to help punks, but even when I do have the free time, when that time comes, will there even be a community to use what I developed? Punks on Hive code is not even open source, and if it is the code is hard to find. When I made that tool to load less punks I made sure to open source it to help others copy me and make it better. Marky was very successful creating the punks, he sold out extremely quickly, now what?…
I don’t have 1% of his success, if I, a no one, become the one to get traction on this project it would say a lot about the interest of the creators, which despite being a decentralized app, if the creators show no interest why would the community? I am glad that marky made the performance update on the website, because if he did not and my tool (which sucks) was the only one with acceptable performance it would show disinterested on the app, but I am also disappointed it was only after I had to build my own tool to overcome the performance issues.
You are a developer and you really like punks, since they also have many attributes may be a solid battle royal would achievable to make based on those, the more rare professions etc can have bigger bonuses once you have mapped the ordinary punk features to extra ordinary abilities make the fuckers "summon" other punks to the crew and have at it. I guess Splinterlands is a good model for it heck you can even make them summon splinterlands cards if you wanted to or rising star cards and use those as enhanced abilities, either way I think @themarkymark won't mind people using punks as foundation for their apps. How about a tower defense where you have a map of punk houses going from rich to poor neighbourhood and each type can build a tower type associated to them , hmm maybe that is like HOOD defense lol.
@igormumba there is a discord for Hivepunks and its fairly active. I am sure if you make some suggestions there you will add value to the project and you never know it might help with getting the price moving.
The project seems far from dead to me, but that doesnt mean they will be worth anything.
I am interested in getting to know more about your punks and especially, what led you to their creation.

The punks are cool, I think they make sense for hive as a community flex. I almost bought a punk a few times but I had other things I wanted to do more with my rewards. But I’m almost certain I’ll get me a hive punk at some point. Probably here soon now that hive punks are on sale
