O futebol é uma paixão nacional no Brasil, faz parte da sua identidade cultural, deixou de ser apenas um esporte e virou história. Grande parte da sociedade está envolvida neste contexto desportivo, as pessoas criam laços afetivos com as suas equipas e jogadores preferidos, toda esta ligação faz de nós o país do futebol.
A Região Nordeste está bem representada no país, no Campeonato Brasileiro de 2024 são três equipes na primeira divisão, três na segunda e sete na terceira, um número relativamente menor que nas demais regiões, mas sua força está sempre presente no maioria das competições nacionais.
O Nordeste possui o primeiro clube nacional formado exclusivamente por brasileiros, o Vitória, fundado em 13 de maio de 1899, com o nome de Club de Cricket Victoria, é também o time mais antigo do Nordeste, sua trajetória continua até hoje.
Assim como nas demais regiões, temos o G-7, clubes que fizeram história, construíram uma força sólida e estão presentes nas disputas financeiras com seus resultados esportivos: Bahia, Ceará, Fortaleza, Náutico, Sport, Santa Cruz e Vitória (descritos em ordem alfabética).
A paixão pelo futebol desenvolveu um sentimento de disputa entre estados, é uma cultura predominante em todo o país, por ser um país gigantesco, as questões econômicas e geográficas contribuíram para a criação de disputas regionais e estaduais, além de nacionais.
O Nordeste criou a Copa do Nordeste em 1976, também conhecida como "Nordestão", é um dos eventos mais importantes do país. Os maiores vencedores, com 4 títulos cada, são os times Bahia e Vitória, clubes rivais do estado de Salvador, quando duelam iniciam o clássico do BA-VI.
Além da representação no Campeonato Brasileiro, o Nordeste do país tem um título mundial único que ninguém deseja, mas que é muito comemorado por seus titulares, o pior time do mundo, conhecido como Íbis Sport Club, clube pernambucano que tem como slogan: “nada pode ser pior”.
