Keep your bicycle clean!

As a cyclist, it's important to keep your bike clean to ensure its longevity and optimal performance. Regular cleaning helps to remove dirt, grime, and debris that can damage your bike over time. A greasy chain can cause your cassette and other parts to wear faster that can lead to high costs. So keeping your bike clean clean will literally save you money.

What do you need?

To get started with cleaning your bike, you don't need much. A hose or bucket of water, some sort of cleaning solution, a soft-bristled brush (I use an old washing-up brush and a toothbrush), a degreaser, a dry rag (I use some old dishcloth or even some old t-shirts), and some lubricant.

  1. Rinse the bike with water to remove any large debris. Don't use a hard jet with the hose because you don't want any water in your bike frame.
  2. Apply the cleaning solution to the bike frame and any other parts that need cleaning.
  3. Use the brushes to scrub away dirt and grime.
  4. Use the degreaser and brushes to clean the chain and gears.
You can buy a degreaser or make your own; https://bicycle2work.com/homemade-bike-chain-degreaser/
  5. Rinse the bike with water and dry it with a clean rag.
  6. Lubricate the chain and other moving parts. Be careful! Don't use too much grease since this sand and dirt will stick to it.
  7. Remove the excessive grease with a dry cloth.

Conclusion

In conclusion, cleaning your bike regularly is essential for maintaining its performance and longevity. By investing in a few pieces of equipment and following a simple cleaning routine, you can keep your bike in top condition for years to come. So, take the time to clean your bike after each ride or at least every few weeks, and enjoy the many benefits of a clean, well-maintained bike.

This is absolutely true and very necessary. I've had to go to a specialized workshop for a "tune-up" because the lack of maintenance made the performance was disastrous. even though my bike is only to move around the city.

Excellent recommendation to alert those of us who are a bit careless.
