The Pros and Cons of a private school

.Image edited using canva,

Education is the best legacy, and I know every parent strives to give their children the best, but due to some limitations and concerns ranging from enough funds, a conducive environment, and adequate methods of teaching, they settle for a particular option. One thing I know for sure from first-hand experience is that even if a school has a conducive environment it still doesn't guarantee a child being taught well.

School is fun no doubt, whether public or private setting, there is always a fun part to which either one we attended. My first two sections of education, that is, my basic and secondary education were in a private school while for my tertiary education, I went to a public federal institution.

I experienced a whole new school experience when i got admitted to a public tertiary institution, you have to be extra special to be noticed by the lecturer and most of them don't care if you understand what is being taught or not, some don't even teach, they just hand you their self written textbooks which you must buy compulsorily. It was difficult at first coming from a private secondary school, but in no time, I adjusted, after all, my parents couldn't afford a private university.

To be frank, I enjoyed both during the time, my primary school was one of the best schools in town, pupils were made to dress neatly and smartly compared to the public school pupils in my area, and we also had interpersonal relationships with our teachers and the class was not overcrowded like the tales I heard from my friends in public schools which was evident when it was the closing hours, the population of students trooping out of the public school was always overcrowded.

More Pros of Private Schools

Due to our less population, the teachers knew us one on one and our capabilities, they gave us their full attention and also created time for extra lessons for us to become better. Extracurricular activities were another thing we enjoyed very well. Whenever we went to competitions, we were always the toppers, especially in debates and mathematics quizzes.

The cons of Private schools

But as with every good side, there will always be a side that needs improvement. Some of them are;

1 High tuition cost

The school fees of most private school is too high causing parents to always be on tension every new term/session, most parents want the full attention teachers give to students in private schools given to their wards, so they struggle extra hard to meet up and when they don't, their wards are always driven home for late payment, therefore missing their classes and even exams. If only private schools could be made more affordable, we pay for literally everything.

2 lack of practical facilities

I was a victim of a private secondary school with no basic apparatus in the science lab. Most times we go to other schools, sometimes public schools for our practical session, which is sadly the case of most unapproved secondary schools in Lagos, Nigeria parading themselves as private school, deceiving most parents with their big buildings.

CONCLUSION

I use to have a negative conception about public secondary school students not being taught well because of the not so bright ones around me then, but all these changed in my 100 level in the university, I met very brilliant students who all went to public school and I was impressed, even though they didn't have conducive learning environment, there were still few that were exceptional which shows at the end of it all, it depends on the individual, whether public or private school, if you are focused, you will still get the best you need to be learned.

Education is no doubt a priority for many parents and I am happy that there is always an option of school when we can't afford a particular one. Have you thought about what Nigeria will look like if private schools were the only schools present in Nigeria?

The cost of education is high truly in private schools and it is frustrating to know that many of these schools only sell their names, they aren't offering the students what they are expected to do.

The cost of education in private secondary schools is massive. I know how more wealthy my parents could be if they had deviated that money to some other aspect. But it does give the best and they realize that. At least most do.

But I'm not sure if private tertiary institutions are better than the public ones, that's if you exclude strikes.

Indeed, individual dedication and focus play a significant role in academic success, irrespective of the educational setting. It's important that all schools strive to provide quality, affordable education with adequate resources.
